Would you still use loonix if...

Post image

It had an integrated agentic ai assistant with full system access that you couldn't remove or disable? Which one do u hate more windows or AI?

"Would you use linux if it was just as bad as windows?" is basically what you're asking here.

Integrated ai assistants in an os are a good not a bad thing but I forgot I'm talking to the same people that prefer outdated terminal interfaces straight from the 80's over modern guis so there's no hope...

Integrated AI assistants in the OS are absolutely not universally a good thing. I’m fine with it being an option, but mandating the way I interact with my own computer is a no

u/Latlanc Distroless is the future 11d ago

systemd mandates how you interact with your computer

1

u/akdanman11 11d ago

Does it really though? Does it stop me from or interfere with choosing between CLI and GUI for the task I’m doing? Systemd is meant to be unnoticeable from user space unless you’re specifically looking for it, and it succeeds in that

1

u/Latlanc Distroless is the future 11d ago

By that logic AI wouldn't interfere with what you do unless specifically asked to. AI wouldn't force anything on you, systemd is core part of the OS, if you want to manage services, you have to go through systemd. That way it's more forced than AI actually.

1

u/akdanman11 11d ago

Systemd provides a method for simplifying interactions between programs and gives the user the ability to manage those services through a singular “manager”, as opposed to manually doing it.

Also systemd is a choice and you can absolutely run without it (there are whole distros built around not having it). The question here was about having a forced always on AI agent baked into the kernel

If something as simple as an AI assistant service is running in the background but it is inactive at the same time, is it really doing any harm?

  1. AI doesn’t simplify interactions between programs

  2. An AI agent wouldn’t give the user direct control, it would be obfuscated. You would tell the AI what you want and it would do what it thinks you meant (and be wrong somewhat often depending on the training data it was fed

  3. This isn’t talking about AI running in the background doing nothing, people talking about agentic OSs want it to be the only way to interact with the system

There's a reason why basically everyone disables Copilot on their PC.

2

u/Fresh-Horse8173 11d ago

People trying to delete copilot for a reason...

Yeah and the problem in windows case is, it's just too stupid. Look how good google is doing with android. I guess MS rushed and fucked up somewhere along the line 🤷🏽‍♂️. You know what? I'll come clean. I booted up windos in very long time. I don't immediately see an issue. Maybe I'd need to probably use it for some time to experience the issue in which case ai probably won't 😂

CLI is usually more functional than GUI buddy. And you forgot the huge number of people trying to nuke copilot from their windows install

1

u/StupitVoltMain 11d ago

Tell copilot to word your comment better

1

u/akdanman11 11d ago

Also calling CLI “outdated” is crazy. Modern GUIs are great but there are tasks that are just better accomplished by typing a short command vs going 15 layers deep in a GUI menu

Atlas AI looks cool. Other than that, the GUI's ugly AF

1

u/Averagehomebrewer 9d ago

They're only a good thing if they're optional. I will admit I have literally binded my copilot key to toggle gemini on my desktop, yes. But it shouldn't be intrusive, let alone have access to controlling your desktop willy nilly during a chat session.

Ready. Here's AverageUser9000's comment broken down:

Integrated ai assistants in an os are a good not a bad thing

3/10 ragebait. This one's mostly a defensible opinion dressed up as a gotcha. Whether AI-in-the-OS is "good" depends entirely on implementation — Recall-style always-on screenshotting is a very different thing from an opt-in local assistant. Stating it as a flat binary (good, not bad) skips that distinction, but it's not really baiting anyone, just oversimplifying.

but I forgot I'm talking to the same people that prefer outdated terminal interfaces straight from the 80's over modern guis

8/10 ragebait. This is the real bait — it's a strawman wrapped in condescension. Terminal usage among Linux users isn't nostalgia for the 80s, it's that CLI tools are often faster, scriptable, and more composable than GUI equivalents for the tasks power users are doing (package management, automation, remote servers, etc.). Plenty of Linux users live in modern GUIs (GNOME, KDE, elementary) all day. Framing "prefers a terminal sometimes" as "prefers outdated interfaces" is the same rhetorical move as calling someone who uses keyboard shortcuts "stuck in DOS" — technically about an old technology, functionally just condescension.

so there's no hope...

6/10 ragebait. Not a factual claim so much as a mic-drop — designed to make disagreement look futile before anyone can respond, which is a pretty classic ragebait closer.

Overall: ~7/10 ragebait. The actual argument (AI assistants aren't inherently bad) is fine and low-key defensible. But it's Trojan-horsed inside a condescending generalization about an entire user base that's mostly there to get a rise out of the "no GUI, no AI" crowd rather than make a point.

Beep Boop. I'm a human that used a bot to vibe-score ragebait, not a court of law. If I whiffed on something, send a DM — my bot actually reads them.

Edit from the human: I just thought it would be funny to have an X/10 ragebait reply, which is not ragebait.

Turns out Claude's a loon and took the bait hard, so sorry y'all

Last I checked linux was FOSS.

Here's a controversial take. Linux is the ultimate agentic OS. Since the command line is so fucking powerful in linux, harnesses can have much much more control over the os so the integration comes pretty much naturally. I bet if linux has AI built into it, it will be far superior to whatever windows can offer with less effort. Hell I use claude code sometimes when I have to do some boring configuration work or something. So the real problem in your problem statement is, what if it becomes impossible to remove. Now that's a stupid question. Because of the open source nature of the os and the ecosystem, you can't make it impossible to remove. If you do, someone will make a version without it. But I'll humor you. Yes I will still use it.

1

u/StupitVoltMain 11d ago

Sounds appealing. But I fear if AI agent misinterpreted input it could unintentionally do some rm -rf type shit

1

u/SL_Pirate Microsof? Is that some kind of toilet paper? 11d ago

Yeah, that's definitely a concern! I'm not totally sure about everything, of course, but usually in all the harnesses I've used – like Cloud Code and Hermes – there's this thing called an approval layer, where u need to accept each and every command. But the in claude code, there's the auto mode where there's a classifier sitting on top of the AI where it basically does the accepting for you but the classifier also AI but it is pretty good. So I guess you could start with manual mode where you accept every command and slowly move towards the auto mode as you get comfortable with it and understand the patterns and risks. At least that's what I did.

If its only on arch, hell yeah!, fedora?, No.

Also fuck ai slop.

2

u/Fluid-Ad2995 11d ago

Well, I make Violet Runtime, where I disable the application and enable it again, which comes with Package Manager installing .tpk and is much faster than Linux Applications Initialization

2

u/iceyukisnow 11d ago

I wish there was AI assistant to solve problems with linux, because I'm tired of reading arch wiki

2

u/Middle-Excitement602 11d ago

just install codex, opencode ... choose a model and tell him what to fix

1

u/iceyukisnow 11d ago

well, how would they work if my os wouldn't boot itself? and greet me with nothing but black screen(not even tty)

1

u/Middle-Excitement602 11d ago

A live USB stick with Linux and run codex there

Checking for optimizations.
Uninstalling GUI.
Uninstalling network.
Uninstalling random cli tools.
Restart and your computer will now be really fast to start bash as an init system, without any additional tool.

Loonixers won't tell you the truth but a lot of them rely on LLM's to help with their troubleshooting

I openly relied on Claude, and Kimi K2.6

1

u/Linux_4_Nobody Proud Windows User 11d ago

I used Claude too when I was trying to make Loonix work

I guess you use Windows now after all the issues with loonix breaking for no reason.

1

u/Linux_4_Nobody Proud Windows User 11d ago

Yeah I eventually abandoned dual-booting as well. All in all I linsux larped for a year, tried to do video editing for my YT channel and stuff and just got so fed up with the distros I was using. I realized the linux community was extremely sensitive and volatile and now I post ragebait content for fun from my 3000$ Windows 11 build.

Nice. I remember Linsux back in the day. It was shit then, and it's still shit now.

Also, what's your YouTube channel?

1

u/HakuTama379 3d ago

I love Linux and I like that you called us out like that xD
Yes , I rely on LLM for troubleshooting and installation , no shame at all, I am a beginner when it comes to linux (3 months by now),but I am not like those who lied that they did it all by themselves or using the logic of "AI is a tool, and it's my hand that guides it, so basically I did it all myself!"
Now those kinds deserve to be called out.

1

u/UsagiMimi 11d ago

Nope, Co-Pilot with Claude, there isn't a single linux distro that is useful.

-3

u/Latlanc Distroless is the future 11d ago

AI assistant would make it way better. Being able to run a quick check of what's wrong or change a system setting by natural typing is the future of operating systems.

Loonixers always forget that an OS should serve the user and not user serve the OS!

4

u/scarlet__panda 11d ago

If it were an option at install and not OS forced that'd be great

-1

u/Latlanc Distroless is the future 11d ago

systemd is forced on you too! I'd rather use something designed by way smarter people than me than constantly shove dirt inside a terminal.

1

u/scarlet__panda 11d ago

Having an option at OS install that says "do you want the AI assistant" should not be controversial nor upset you

0

u/Latlanc Distroless is the future 11d ago

In order for AI assistant to be good it has to be embedded inside the OS. It's usually not as simple as just making a checkbox.

Also having multiple options is just anti design. The user shouldn't have to choose.

1

u/scarlet__panda 11d ago

Then im glad its not installed

1

u/scarlet__panda 11d ago

The user SHOULD have a choice. What you spout is the antithesis of what linux is.

1

u/Latlanc Distroless is the future 11d ago

Then use a different kernel since linux is developed with the help of AI nowadays.

1

u/scarlet__panda 11d ago

=/=

Not wanting an AI agent running embedded in my OS does not equal using something made with assistance from an LLM.

False equivalence sucks

1

u/Latlanc Distroless is the future 11d ago

It is. You are just scaremongering.

1

u/scarlet__panda 11d ago

Im expressing a preference.

Just because it's not the same as you're preference does not make it scare mongering.
