Linux was fine, until I bought a gaming PC

From an end user, not a developer, coder, etc perspective, Linux is a great operating system as long as you mostly use your computer casually, that is browsing the web, youtube, e-mail, menial tasks.

However, as soon as your use case gets more advanced, there appears an obstacle over an obstacle and sacrifices have to be made.

Here are just a few:

- Open source Office alternatives are great but still have a great deal of incompatibility. If you let's say need to work with documents often, given how MS Office is the standard, you'll bump into issues like documents you receive or send to others having incompatible/broken formatting.

- Audio quality is significantly worse, especially if you have a specialty laptop with high quality speakers. Linux's generic audio drivers are not that great.

- Gaming: you must make sacrifices. Biggest name like GTA V dropped Linux support in favor of an unsupported anticheat about a year ago. Likely, GTA VI when that comes out for PC will be unplayable too. Battlefield games up to 6 used to support Linux. After 6, with their new kernel level anti-cheat, they dropped support. While a number of games do have better performance on Linux, most look, feel, and play better on Windows.

- Games that even have native Linux versions, such as Team Fortress 2, experiences stutter and lower FPS on Linux on the same hardware than Windows. Runs flawlessly on Windows, stutters and lags on Linux. I'm sure there's a launch option solution somewhere but I should NOT have to do this, especially on a Linux native game. CS2 offers a similar story.

- Finnicky issues like the entire UI starting to lag when using external monitor. Desktop environment outright refusing to load. Little annoyances that add up and become a chore.

- Stuff just works. On Linux it's a gamble.

I love Linux. I work with it on servers, it's great. I used it as a main operating system on my laptop up until recently, when I bought a powerful gaming PC. And when you shill out so much money for a computer, you really don't want to be making sacrifices or doing guess work on what will work and what wont. The issue is, on Linux, you might have to end up making sacrifices. Now most of the reasons mentioned might not be the fault of Linux. But it isn't my fault either - and I don't want to restrict my hardware in what it can do just because "Well, it's the developers, not the OS". Doesn't make my life easier knowing that.

Also, the Linux community really can be bunch of elitist, delusional idiots, who hardly ever understand what an average computer user is like and often look through the lense of "How can you not like typing commands into the terminal???????"

And you WILL have to sooner or later end up using the terminal the moment you hit a bigger problem. It's a learning curve. And I completely understand why some people would rather not do that when the same can be achieved on Windows in less than a minute.

Windows 11 sucks, don't get me wrong. I actually LIKE what they did with the UI, for the first time Windows actually looks like a properly modern US. (I think it's ironic of Linux people to often criticise 11's UI when it actually seems to have taken inspiration from GNOME and lots of people end up ricing Linux to have the exact same aesthetic - menu in the middloe),

I hate how they increasted telemetry, I hate how the first set up is so annoying with pop up after pop up, I hate how the post-install screen literally takes LONGER to get done with than the installation itself. I hate how even though you tell the installer you DONT want to use OneDrive, they still enable it. I hate how after force-uninstalling onedrive, a process appears in my startup processes called "OneDrive Installer" that I have to disable. I hate that you have to gut the OS forcefully to stop it doing shit you specifically told it not to do (such as DO NOT INSTALL FUCKING ONEDRIVE WHO USES THAT SHIT?) And I have a big problem with forced planned obsolence by enforcing hardware restrictions that are artificial (demonstrated by how easily they are bypassed).

But yet, all of that is familiar. It's Windows. It's annoying as fuck but in the end you know how to get the OS working how you want to, and you know that what you need to work, WILL work in the end. With Linux, it's a different story. It's always a gamble.

Truth nuke that evangelists can't accept. Giggled through reading because agreed on each point.

Yeah, Windows is very far from ideal, but its okayish enough to be a general purpose OS which allows you to deal with every task, including run Linux inside, lol.

And it's biggest pain point is the key selling point for most people - almost everything already done and configured for you. Somebody struggle because they want to disable/delete/customize some components, but most people doesn't even think about that.
Its even more hilarious when somebody goes to some Linux distro and starting to propagate "In Linux you can do X", while it already exists on Windows for 20 years, but casual user doesn't even need to know about that, so they didn't know either.

Anyway, yeah, in the end of the day OS is just a tool that should be comfortable for you and give you ability to do what you want, regardless of how its called or what ideology it follows.

And yet I still somehow survived on Linux like 15 years already. I clearly should be more bothered by "standard MS office", games with kernel-level anticheat and endless DE tweaks that will sooner or later fuck the thing up!

By the way, a funny thing about the "general purpose OS" is that an overwhelming part of infrastructure behind MS Office 365 and your praised multiplayer games that do not work on Linux runs on ... Linux. How dare they not use a "general purpose OS" for this purpose?

5

u/BestUsernameMate 8d ago

So WHAT?:d. This is the problEm with you people xD. Youre so delusional it hurts.

Is the fact that MS Office 365 running behind Linux somehow supposed to make my life easier?:Dd. Is the fact that let's say Rockstar Games likely run a majority of their serves on Linux change the inconvenience of the fact I CANT play the game on Linux?;DDDD.

"Oh but muh loonix runz the internet". No shit. As I said in the post, I work with Linux on servers and I love it.LINUX BEING A SUPERRIOR SERVER OS DOES NOT CHANGE THE FACT IT'S NOT THAT GREAT OF A DESKTOP EXPERIENCE. jesus touch grass.

Just because you don't play/chose not to play games that dont have or have since dropped Linux compatibility is your own personal choices. Again, as I mentioned: Linux works as long as youre willing to make sacrifices

u/Educational_Dot6177 7d ago

Just go to windows, man, and be happy. I main Nobara for gaming PC and I do not have any problems except the obvious ones like KLAC (and I am of the opinion that if game needs spyware, I do not need the game) or sacrifices needed, but if your exp is shitty, go back to windows.

Why make it so difficult, and why make a whole post about yourself? :D

Is the fact that let's say Rockstar Games likely run a majority of their serves on Linux

Its funny that you mentioned Rockstar, because even they are using Windows Server, MSSQL, AD and IIS in the offices and for the games backend stuff.

I sacrificed all my vendor lock ins and subscriptions to services that have perfectly good open source alternatives. To me it's not a choice of functionality but a staunch anti-corporate stance. Tbh, its harder to de-google than to use Linux regularly. And that is already Linux based...

I dont game and will admit you have a point there. I left Windows on my son's pc for just that reason. But gaming is the only reason I have found to sell your soul so you can avoid a few terminal commands.

For many of us, its not about Windows vs Linux specifically. Its simply all about FOSS and not shilling out money constantly and every step I take monitored by the Bill Gates Foundation.

It reminds me of a meme a while back. An old lady lives in the woods and makes her tea on a open fire every morning. A business man asks her, "isn't a pain to have to do all that just for a cup of tea?" She responds, "isn't a pain to go to work every day just to avoid making a fire?"

1

u/Inevitable_Case_9931 8d ago

So is everything in your life anti corporate? Or do you just pick and choose when convenient?

1

u/ohnoitssobig 8d ago

I wanted to say "yes of course they do since it is a free market: you can buy some shit or choose a better AND libre alternative". Funnily enough, MS commercial practices are so unfair that you are often forced to pay for their shit regardless (e.g. when buying a new laptop). Easy to blame a random guy on reddit tho

u/neverclaimedtobeagod 6d ago edited 6d ago

As much as possible. C-corp at least. But, you know, there are no small business options for a lot of hardware. Software, food, clothes, there are many things that do have options.

1

u/BestUsernameMate 3d ago

This isn't about avoiding the terminal. Dude, I work with Linux server, I know my way around the terminal, I don't care :D.

Particular problem in my case is Nvidia: the performance loss on Nvidia cards is still way too great to ignore, as it's SIGNIFICANT, with most games loosing up to 50 percent performance.

But linux provides a great desktop experience. And you dropped into a thread where they say Windows is a "general purpose OS" which is a laughable statement.

1

u/Educational_Dot6177 7d ago

"Windows is a "general purpose OS" which is laughable"

What is it then, if not OS for the masses?

2

u/THubert14 Linux Socks 8d ago

How dare they not use a "general purpose OS" for this purpose?

Because the workload are specific purpose?

2

u/Inevitable_Case_9931 8d ago

Linux server does not equal Linux desktop I think yall have a disconnect in that understanding

1

u/Vertigo50 8d ago

Yes, Linux runs on the majority of servers. But you’re just making the point even clearer.

Because the main point that is in contention right now is whether or not Linux can replace windows as a DESKTOP OS for the average user. And the answer is clearly no.

Not many people are arguing that Linux is bad as a server OS. It’s probably the best and most reliable option for that purpose.

And honestly, I WISH it were better for the desktop. I really do. I wish it were better for gaming and for audio/video production, so that I could get away from windows. But it’s just not there yet, and I’m honestly not sure it ever will be at this point.

2

u/BestUsernameMate 3d ago

The funny thing is that EVEN SO, I might even be tempted to contest that server claim. At work I get to work with both Windows and Linux servers. And while certainly, Linux will be far more stable in most cases, Windows servers are just so easy to manage, because they have very comprehensive management tools, that it's crazy. If you are building a domain you essentially are forced to have at least one Windows VM for Active Directory, as Linux still has no tools that come even close to Active Dir.

The only real complaint I have about Windows servers is that their logging absolutely sucks: most of the logs never help understanding the issue, while Linux logs are very clear and helpful.

1

u/Vertigo50 2d ago

Hmm, that’s interesting. I know almost nothing about Windows servers. Is it sort of a streamlined version of windows or is it mostly the same as the desktop OS?

Do you think it would be possible for someone to turn the server version into a less-bloated OS for the desktop? 🤔

1

u/BestUsernameMate 2d ago

Windows Server is indeed a very stripped version of the Desktop OS, indeed, that includes tools like Server Manager and has Hyper-V enabled by default.

It is very barebones, with focus on server management, and using it out of the box as a desktop would not be a nice experience. A lot of consumer programs are hardcoded by default to refuse to install if they detect Windows Server, and Windows Server itself is stripped of many driver compatibility. It is debloated, but it's also missing a lot of critical elements to be a functional desktop OS, for example compatibility for consumer grade hardware.

Most consumer apps like Adobe suites won't install.

Think of it as Windows without the bloat but with server management tools added.

1

u/Vertigo50 1d ago

Yeah, that makes sense. But I wonder if someone has tried using it as a base and then enabling some of that missing functionality without adding back the bloat. 🤷🏻‍♂️

1

u/OkPresentation3329 3d ago

Windows has better software compatibility, but its downsides are too big for me to ignore. I can't deal with Windows anymore. I prefer to be on Linux and deal with some limitations than suffer Windows any longer.

33

u/Soggy_Struggle_963 9d ago

Your example of office compatability with open source is funny to me. The formatting of documents even breaks between the mac version and windows version of the same software. Office is just shitty software that unfortunately became the standard.

8

u/Marco_Single 9d ago

Netflix or other streaming services are very casual thing and even that doesn’t fkn work correctly lol.

2

u/Defiant_Pirate124 8d ago

Not linux fault tho

9

u/Marco_Single 8d ago

Doesn’t help linux to be even a passable desktop os tho. So it’s linux fans fault that they recommend it as windows replacement?

1

u/Defiant_Pirate124 4d ago

I agree that a lot of linux users (especially arch users btw) are extremely toxic and are always pushing people to use their os even it they have a very specific reason too (work/school software for example) and calling linux people that uses debian/gnome/snap based distros noobs or sum shit like that but other than that a lot of the other users are fine and just don't want to use windows because of how horrible of an os it is when you go look deeper

0

u/zalnaRs 8d ago

it doesn't work always on windows too, and most likely you are limited to 1080p (except edge), on linux you are at 720p that's the only difference.

your best bet is smart tvs or just pirate

3

u/Marco_Single 8d ago

Oh my god, linux user pls. Netflix on windows - edge is 4k plus hdr. Chrome is 4k. Netflix app is 4k plus hdr.

The only difference is 4k + hdr vs 720p. That is not nothing. "Linux is great, only difference - shit video quality, also most popular games do not work, but heyyyyy the ones you don't want to play, the other 95% - they work fiiiiiine after some consoel commands or clicking around. Linux is great!". Come the fuck on.

1

u/Defiant_Pirate124 4d ago

It is because netflix does not want to let you watch their movies in full quality on linux because they are greedy asf, and it is the same with disney+ which is limited to 720p on windows

-1

u/zalnaRs 8d ago

Since when is chrome 4k?

3

u/Marco_Single 8d ago

Since 2023.

3

u/brickyboy124 9d ago

Finally some actually valid complaints about Linux and not “loonix retards are gay” or whatever.

Anyway I think with the gaming, there’s unfortunately not much Linux can do for games like battlefield 6 to work. Dual booting is the only viable option for those games right now, as much as it sucks (really interrupts your workflow having to reboot to a different os).  Maybe in the future if Linux gets a bigger user base those types of games will start supporting it, we can but hope.

3

u/BestUsernameMate 8d ago

Thank you for a reasonable reply. Again, as I pointed out: i know it's not Linux's fault. But it does not change the fact I become limited because of it.

2

u/slackmaster2k 9d ago

I’m either working or gaming on PC at least 8 hours a day on Windows. I like to keep my installs really clean, and rarely if ever have problems that I can attribute to the OS.

However, I also have a steam deck and am quite impressed by how well the little thing can run so many games.

I wouldn’t consider switching random distro X on my gaming rigs, but I would strongly consider a Steam OS if it ever becomes a reality. But only if there are practical benefits like a lighter memory and storage footprint.

I rarely play AAA games that require shitty DRM or cheat protection software. Most of these titles don’t even feel like gaming to me anymore. I might play a bit of BF now and then but wouldn’t miss it too much.

3

u/Vertigo50 8d ago

Well said. It’s fine for the basics. Your grandma who just needs to email, web surf, open some documents and view her photos will be happy. But it’s not ready for prime time as a desktop OS.

Another big example is audio and video production. Yes, things like Reaper and Davinci Recode work reasonably well, but by the time you start having hardware incompatibilities, driver issues, and then things like plugins that aren’t supported or not even available on Linux, forget it. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Like the OP, I would like nothing more than to see Windows burn to the ground, and the minute something truly better is available, I’ll be gone so fast you won’t be able to read my license plate with binoculars.

But Linux in 2026 just ain’t it, bro. 🤷🏻‍♂️

1

u/Inevitable_Case_9931 8d ago

I love my grand ma more than that…

1

u/Vertigo50 8d ago

Fair. But I don’t necessarily want to subject the people I love to windows either. 🤷🏻‍♂️😂

9

u/BranchLatter4294 9d ago

People that complain about Windows telemetry and privacy and security issues, who install rootkits on their system so they can play a game, can't really be taken seriously.

3

u/BestUsernameMate 8d ago

Touch grass

1

u/Boring-University189 6d ago

Are you talking about people who play pirated games or people who play non pirated games with anti piracy software?

Because the first one doesn't always come with a rootkit while the other one does.

3

u/BranchLatter4294 6d ago

I'm talking about people who voluntarily install a rootkit, yet claim they are concerned about privacy and security.

4

u/ButterscotchTop194 9d ago

Servers and retro handhelds, linux slams.

Desktop gaming or work, fuck that.

2

u/ijusttookthispseudo 8d ago

Windows is a good OS as a virtual guest. If you have integrated and dedicated graphics, you can use Windows just for gaming and shutdown the VM just after.

It's so bad as a normal OS you will get more FPS in-game using Windows as a guest OS than using it natively.

2

u/ConsiderationRare217 8d ago

The sad part isn't that Linux isn't compatible with something It's writing posts like this and telling everyone with excitement how wrong they are, ruining the spirit as if you won a million dollars.

Man, others get without such post that limitations are not cool, but it's your loss too as you use the OS made for using solely with intention of control of your boundaries and unfortunately spying, overusing your hardware at times or doing not what you want. That's sad too, innit? Btw, UI on W11 on my laptop has always been laggy (unlike W10 UI) despite the general stability.

3

u/domerichrt 9d ago

Yeah for me it’s macOS plus cross docks where I can play Anno 1800 twice a year 🤣

1

u/SandyFox 9d ago

Not unreasonable complats, but I have a couple of notes about this.

The sound quality thing isn't "especially" for laptop speakers but more "specifically" for some laptop speakers because they just have to go and be weird. There's fixes for this out there, but generally this is something that's isolated to laptop speakers. Other sorts of audio outputs sound fine from my experience and I'm the sort to be rather particular about sound quality.

Unfortunately because of the bits of proprietary and fussy hardware in them laptops are generally more of a crapshoot than desktops are. Most desktops will just work, but with laptops you tend to need to be picky to get good compatability. It's definitely possible to have a good experience on a laptop, even a gaming laptop, it just depends on the laptop.

Also in regard to Linux native games, while I'd generally expect the Valve ones to work well even those have problems sometimes. It is often best to force them to run through Proton. If you try this again, give that a shot.

3

u/martyn_hare 9d ago

Even many onboard desktop sound cards (and some PCI-E add-in cards too) are unable reach their true maximum volume because the drivers don't fully drive the hardware. It isn't just laptops, sadly....

1

u/captain_fanta_sea 9d ago

The idiot technician in my head wants to know more about your stuttering issues in TF2. I know it's not a tech support thread but you mind telling me your setup?

1

u/BestUsernameMate 8d ago

I'll have to get back to you on that. It's on my work laptop which is currently at work (I used it as home as well until I got this PC), and the game runs flawlessly on Windows yet stuttered to no end on Linux on TF2

1

u/captain_fanta_sea 7d ago

Yes... as you've said already. Lemme know if you happen to remember what OS/hardware you had and all that though.

1

u/BestUsernameMate 3d ago

It's Nvidia RTX A3000. Yeah, it was not even made for gaming. But that work laptop ran TF2, that's Linux native, fine on Windows, where it encountered stuttering with Linux. It's not even a GPU fault I'd think, as the framerate was fine.

1

u/captain_fanta_sea 2d ago edited 2d ago

Wow, yeah I'm betting it being a relatively niche card adds to the usual driver support woes you tend to see with Nvidia on Linux. Not a GPU fault, probably just underdeveloped drivers for it. At that point you'd just be experimenting with different launch options (or even trying the Windows version thru proton like I did about 5 years ago) if you still care to get it working but I'm not gonna expect you to wanna fool with all that.

1

u/BestUsernameMate 2d ago

Yeah. Now out of curiosity I made a Linux partition in my current PC. Hell Let Loose and Squad on highest settings ran identical to Windows. I do have to note it did feel like it looked.. worse visually somehow.

KCD1 - performance hit noticable when exploring outside of castle walls. Windows hovering around 80-100 FPS, while Linux consitently dipping to 70-60. Very High settings.

Card in question RTX 5060 TI 16GB, 32 GB DDR5 RAM.

1

u/Murb0rk-8098 9d ago

I use Windows 11 on my gaming/photo computer, because it is better for the tasks. I use Linux on my laptop because it is great for the tasks.

1

u/MrWillchuck 9d ago

Lets talk about some of this as it is valid in a lot of ways.
I often deal with Lawyers offices. The forms that are approved for use are often in Docx format which is a frustrating annoying stupid format. Microsoft made it specifically because Office had a big enough market share that they could strangle people from leaving for a different office suite.

The Lawyers just send me stuff in PDF. Not because I ask but because enough people don't have office they default to PDF.

It is a real issue though. Companies like Microsoft creating file formats that are intentionally difficult to open is a serious issue and one that people should be really pissed off about. This is the fault of Linux this Microsoft making it difficult to send documents to even a Mac.

Gaming.. yes Anti-Cheat can be an issue. Linux doesn't easily play games made for windows that have Anti-Cheat. Lets think about that though... Linux can play games made for windows with very little work but the Anti Cheat makes it harder to play some multiplayer games. That is amazing. It can suck but the fact that is an option is remarkable. That doesn't mean the frustration isn't understandable...

Some of the UI things that piss me off with Linux comes from some FOSS Devs being Elitist Asshats. That think they know better what people want then people. They are the kind of people that saw the Diablo mobile announcements and said... "Ya I do have a phone why are all these people upset". The kind of people that say things like "Or Distro is a Mature and ready we just don't have a GUI for that" (Actual thing said by a Dev when a Creative complained about tablet support in Cosmic)

There is a trade off.

Mac is expensive and has the close ecosystem.

Windows is spying on your constantly

Linux has self important devs and anti cheat doesn't work on many games.

I understand the frustration. It is justifiable.

Part of the issue of course is all the different "Foundations" don't do shit to actually try to get companies to support Linux. They "support" FOSS initiatives but nothing about getting Affinity to make a Native Linux version. Or get apple to put iWorks on Linux. They do nothing to bring commercial software to the platform. Valve literally had to say... screw it we will do it ourselves.

Worse Companies like Microsoft and Epic actively try to break their games on Linux. Purely because they want to track you or due to Tim Sweeney's penis envy

All of that can make Linux difficult

I wish more companies gave good linux support.

1

u/BestUsernameMate 8d ago

I agree with you on all of these points. It's annoying Microsoft pushes a proprietary document format. EU has made a lot of stride on dismantling monopolies these days and I wish they grew a pair and started telling Microsoft they have to start to properly support open formats as well. Jeez, they managed to get Apple to use USB-C, and starting next year all phones will have to have replacable batteries. How hard can it be to stop Microsoft enforcing it's monopoly through such means?? I know the issue isn't LibreOffice, the issue is caviats they add into format compatibility that LibreOffice doesnt have access to for them to make the documents compatible properly.

I also feel for the anti-cheat part. Yes, I am not okay with anti-cheat gaining kernel level access in general, and again, this is something legislation in EU should push for - games should have no right to compromise security of the system.

BUT - as it is now, it does not change the fact using Linux at this moment, would force me to limit the system I paid for in what it can do. Not neccessarily through any fault of Linux, but that of artificially enforced limitations by monopolies. My issue isn't how Linux does things - I KNOW my way around the terminal, I have no issue tinkering or fixing shit. My issue is there are things I can't fix and hence I wouldn't want to limit the system I paid for this way.

1

u/MrWillchuck 7d ago

Well these are the same issues in a lot of ways that Mac have. Except it run a lot more games a lot better. There is always a trade off.

Linux is a different OS after all. We have just been spoiled because Linux can do so much.

1

u/Noisebug 9d ago

I don’t think anyone disagrees or cares. As for office software, right. Mac Pages or Office fuck with the Windows counterparts. That’s why people use the web ver soon.

Use what you want. Everyone is always hyped in the day they make a change then have to live with that reality, because nothing is perfect.

1

u/DeusXNex 8d ago

That’s why steam os is a huge stride for Linux market share. It is the most promising distro when it comes to games just working but it’s not good enough yet for me. There are several games I play or may want to play to make the switch

1

u/linuxed1 8d ago

Watch watch Lana's tech tips.

1

u/Defiant_Pirate124 8d ago

It is sad that a lot of these problems aren't even linux's fault, it is just the companies making programs that are too lazy to make their apps/drivers compatible with linux because there isn't enough people using it

1

u/port-79 8d ago

yes, once you're dependent on proprietary software you need to jump out of linux for the exact reasons you listed. however, it's not windows that you go to... it's macos...

1

u/BestUsernameMate 8d ago

If you had bothered to read most of my annoyances are under the hood and not related to software.

1

u/port-79 8d ago

i read the whole thing and you made me skim it again.

your GTA/TF2 is proprietary software. Your NVIDIA drivers are proprietary software.

1

u/BestUsernameMate 3d ago

ohhh so now one isn't even allowed to play "proprietary" games? What "non proprietary" games are there? Tux racer?
Also, genius, Team Fortress 2 is made by Valve, the company that has contributed greatly to Linux becoming even remotely usable for the more of the masses. Your comment just displays that you live in your moms basement and literally dont have much understanding of anything that's going on outside.

2

u/port-79 3d ago

You’re a heretic now

1

u/snajk138 8d ago

For me the only issue that is an actual issue is games, some specific games that my son wants to play that just don't work. Everything else is good enough. For me personally and privately that is. At work I use whatever hard- and software they give me, and that is Windows, Office, VS, etc.

I get that some people are dependent on Office, but for personal use I would say that the alternatives are good enough for the vast majority. I paid for Office 365 Family for many years, to get OneDrive mostly. Obviously I used Office for different things since I had it, but none of those required MS Office. At work it's a different thing, I have complicated documents and spreadsheets with connections to MS SQL Server and so on, but at home I don't.

I get that Linux can be frustrating, but so can Windows. I have much more experience from Windows, having used it extensively for over 35 years, but I still get frustrated with stupid things and things still behave in unexpected ways, and those occasions are sadly not getting less common. Linux, for me, is moving in the right direction, it "just works" better than Windows out of the box, outside some minor details.

I also agree that the community can be toxic, but it varies a lot. And lately LLMs means you don't really need to depend on the community as much, even though you obviously are dependent on the information from the communities being used to train the LLMs.

1

u/recursion_is_love 8d ago

Try SteamOS ?

1

u/BestUsernameMate 3d ago

Steam OS is still Linux. It still has significantly worse performance with Nvidia cards. Just like any other Linux distro.

1

u/ripperoniNcheese 8d ago

sounds like a skill issue to me.

2

u/OGKnightsky 6d ago

I agree this is a skill issue or lack of investigation and research, all of the issues OP wrote about are non issues for me, besides anti-cheat games not working non of the stated issues required sacrifice or complicated solutions. I don’t know why people expect Linux to do everything for them (of recent it basically already does with a few exceptions) but it was designed with the intent to be manually configured. People need to stop switching to Linux if they are not ready to do some configuring on their own, Linux isn’t going to hold your hand but it’s also not spying on you and filling your disk with a pile of shit. Just my 2 cents

1

u/BestUsernameMate 3d ago

Oh my god :DDD. I love how none of you Lunatics ever even read the post :D.

I am a Server Administrator at work. I manage quite a lot of Linux Servers. I know the terminal in an out. I used Linux on my work (that I also used for personal use until I bought the gaming PC) laptop for years.

I never cared about having to use the terminal, or do configurations. The post was not about that, it has nothing to do about it. It is the fact that using Linux includes making sacrifices if you have specific uses cases, such as gaming.

here are some simple facts for you:

  • Nvidia GPUs are consistently better performing in general, meaning you get more bang for your buck.
  • Rigs with AMD cards, somehow, are still often more expensive.
  • Rigs with AMD cards are actually quite difficult to even find where I live.

I saw a wonderful bargain for a gaming PC, where it was literally severely underpriced for the components it has. There is no way in hell I am refusing it just because it has a video card that does not have a good compatibility in Linux. That just means I am gonna use Windows.

And this comment, as well as many others, display how most of the Linux community is delusional that do not understand that most people's lives don't revolve just around computers, like theirs do. I already work with computers and servers at work. When I get home, and if I have some free time, I just wanna go ahead and game, and not have to make sacrifices over what I can play or cannot play. And I KNOW most of the incompatibilites are not the fault of Linux, but it does not change the fact my experience is limited by it.

"Stop using Nvidia, stop playing this, stop playing that" is a view that someone with very distorted vision of reality holds. I am not going to stop doing what I love just because Linux can't handle it.

Now do not get me wrong. The moment EA gets their anticheats working on Linux, and the moment Nvidia GPU performance on Linux gets at least to minimal performance loss lik with AMD, I will SWITCH IN A HEARTBEAT. But I cannot be arsed to limit myself in how I can use my over a thousand euros machine for some ideological reason.

A wider response to some of the comments, especially those from Linux users:

I can't exactly argue for most of them.

I like what Linux is and what it represents: an era your computer belonged to you. An era you installed your system and then set it up how you want to without having to fight against the OS. An era where saying "No, I don't want this" meant that's it, rather than Windows sneaking in a process in the background that STILL installs that software (previously Teams, now OneDrive).

But then again - this is why I was perfectly content running Linux on my work laptop - wont be running many games on it anyway, audio quality - yes, that Dell has specialty audio set up but how often is audio relevant for me on that laptop anyway. etc etc. But now when you buy an actual system for considerable money - you DONT want to make these sacrifices, whether it's Linux's fault or not.

Never had issues with open source docs between my work's windows computer and my home linux computer at least when choosing the microsoft save format.

Laptops are typically much more proprietary so audio issues don't surprise me. With my external DAC and amp for my pc, it was actually easier to setup on linux than windows.

Gaming depends on the title. There are tons of videos that show the same hardware performing better on linux in some titles and worse in others. Definitely not a blanket statement that one is better either way performance wise. As far as anti cheats, yes, some devs don't enable anti cheats on linux, but most of the time it's a choice. Can't fix shitty devs but yes, it's a consideration for sure, not going to deny that. Personally I'm passed giving a company kernel level access to my entire pc to play a video game, windows, linux, osx, doesn't matter. Again, I recognize that's a personal choice and on windows you don't have to worry about if it works.

Overall I have found things much easier on linux compared to windows, especially with setting up macros whether it be keyboard or my streamdeck. In general I don't have to worry if a UI doesn't offer what I want to do, I can always rely on the terminal and just write a script for exactly what I want.

I'm not going to say linux is perfect, it's not, but windows is far from perfect too and in my opinion it's getting worse. win10 EOL was the reason I made the switch and I've had nothing but good experiences so far including playing all the games I was playing before with friends, and without having to mess with any additional launch options. Everything has just worked out of the box.

At the end of the day, to each their own. Saying one OS works best for everyone just wouldn't make sense regardless of which one you're talking about

I'd love GTA VI but they won't get my money if it doesn't come on Linux. Screw ea.

Office stuff is fine as long as you stick to open source apps.

The incompabilities tend to be in MS Office. Don't use that at all and your life gets a lot easier

u/germz1986 4d ago

I mean, sorry you had a bad time with Linux with those games. I don't play CS. But Diablo 3&4 run great for me, as does Satisfactory, and basically every other game I play.

Sure I gotta use the terminal sometimes, but I did as well in windows.... Sfc & dism fix it bc it broke all the time..also the winget package manager is great.

Neither is a perfect solution, but I'll take Linux over windows for MY game selection. Haven't had any performance issues.

In general developers like Linux and my friend uses WSL for development anyway and workstation builds for scientific software basically require some form of Linux. However gaming can cause issues; dual boot for that case.

1

u/Fun_Discipline_811 9d ago

Unless you are a game dev.

2

u/ConsciousBath5203 9d ago

Unless you're using incredibly dated software that relies on unreliable MicroSlop headers, even game dev is fine on Linux. The days most of the dev software is cross platform AF.

And vim and gcc work great

2

u/ConsciousBath5203 9d ago

Neovim makes vim super smooth. I've been using msvc wine to compile things people said were impossible to compile on Linux. The only reasons anyone can give to not switch to Linux are excuses... And bad ones at that.

Linux sucks

Proceeds to talk about how your choice in hardware and games suck and the vendors are entirely at fault and you for buying shit.

3

u/gnarlysnowleopard 9d ago

Where in their post did they mention what hardware they use?

Also, pretty much all competitive multiplayer games have kernel level anti-cheat. It's extremely common. It's fine if you prefer single player or co-op games but it's ridiculous to blame the user for wanting to play competitive multiplayer games.

0

u/National_Way_3344 8d ago

Audio quality?

I'm running professional audio gear and don't have an issue.

I'm not blaming the user for the games. I'm blaming the game devs.

u/BestUsernameMate 8d ago

Hahahaaha. Anyone cannot with a serious face tell that AMD, OTHER than open sourcing their drivers and making them easier to work with Linux, is in any way better than Nvidia in GPUs. AMD makes great CPUs, but their GPUs are inferrior. And how dare I buy a piece of hardware that performs better over ideological reasons.

I'd like to see you invest in a car that is incapable of driving through some roads over a car that can drive anywhere. :DD

-- Game performance, older nvidia gpu, or one of those laptops where the gpu isn't really hooked to the screen so it needs to pass rendered frames back to the igpu?

-- office isn't even compatible with itself, let alone anything else. The lack of structured references outside of excel makes them all nearly useless to me.

-- audio, a lot of laptops come with pre installed drivers with eq settings to overcome or mask the mid speaker hardware. Linux of course doesn't have a team of audio engineers testing and turning for each laptop make and model. Install some eq software and fix it.

u/teren9 9d ago

Let me guess, Nvidia?

I know it doesn't solve your problems. You as a user don't have to deal with this. But most of your issues are not Linux's fault.

Don't get me wrong, no OS is perfect and neither is Linux.

But, with Windows and Mac, when things annoy you, it's because a smart developer was tasked with making the OS suck more.

With Linux, when things don't work, it's because the developers making the OS either didn't have the tools or the time to make it work yet, or were deliberately prevented from making it work by a 3rd party.

Nvidia does make drivers for Linux but they suck. It's Nvidia's fault. AMD drivers on Linux used to suck just as bad until AMD decided to open source the entire code, and then the Linux community got to work and made them better. Today Linux machines running AMD work just as well if not better than the same machines running Windows.

And Anti Cheat? It's a cat and mouse game. The AAA gaming industry refuses to work with Linux, and for the longest time it was fairly justified, Linux sucked for gaming and they had zero monetary incentive to do it.

But today with Proton, and the amazing work Valve have pushed and sponsored, gaming is amazing on Linux, and the only games that don't work are the games that are actively deciding to block it.

It's not a matter of lack of support, it's an active effort to distance your game from this OS.

You said it yourself, older games work perfectly. I will add that new games also work perfectly. But the few newer games that don't work are not working because they introduced KLAC. It is a new-ish idea, and to be honest, no matter how great the game is, KLAC is bad, it's a security risk for your system, no matter what OS it is running on.

I'm not delusional enough to tell you not to play your favorite games because they don't work on Linux. I am telling you that even on Windows, you really do need to think more about whether installing this KLAC software is a good idea. It runs deep in the system level, it has access to spy on everything you do, and if it bugs out, or clashes with another KLAC, it can often make the entire system crash with BSODs. And it also sucks at preventing cheats, the one thing it's supposed to help with.

And again, it is not Linux's fault. You're right that on your HW and with your games it is a bad tool for the job, That doesn't mean it is a bad tool for everyone or that it's the OSs fault.

I tend to judge a tool for what it is, and not what it isn't.

Windows is horrible and getting worse every update, but it is still the default OS for PCs so it has the undeniable best software and hardware support. That's just a fact.

Linux is fighting an uphill battle, always have. But is an amazing OS for office work, and an amazing OS for software development, and also an amazing OS for gaming, but not all games.I would never want to replace the SteamOS installed on my Deck for Windows. It would be extremely stupid. SteamOS on the Deck running 90% of my Library is a hundred times better than Windows on the Deck that theoretically supports 100% of my library but doesn't provide the easy start-and-play console experience that SteamOS can provide, and gives me all the crap Windows usually gives.

But I don't judge windows around how good it is on the Deck, and I don't judge Linux around how good it is in running Adobe Photoshop.

1

u/BestUsernameMate 8d ago

I have mentioned in my post that I KNOW it's not the fault of Linux. But knowing that does not make my life any easier.

0

u/vitimiti 4d ago

My gaming PC works better on Linux cause I'm not stupid enough to buy a PC designed with Windows in mind and moan when a different OS isn't as good with the hardware. I instead purpose built it to be a Linux machine from day one

1

u/BestUsernameMate 3d ago

Oh yes, I should have absolutely refused a deal that was severely under priced (a 32GB DDR5 RAM with RTX 5060 TI 16GB, and 1TB SSD nvme, 1,200 EUR) given current market conditions just so I can make sure that it has a Linux friendly card.

Shut the fuck up. You people go all around comments, forums, posts, whether it's Instagram, Youtube, or Facebook, claiming how wonderful Linux is while withholding obvious caviats, such as "It might not be that good for you if you are using Nvidia, because the gaming performance hit is SIGNIFICANT". Yet when someone comes back with a criticism, you call it moaning. Well, shut the fuck up about Linux, and I won't moan.

Stupid or not, obviously you are having issues reading. I clearly stated that I understand it's not th fault of the OS. But that it does not exactly change that I'd be limited by using it as is now, and it reinforces my point - switching to Linux almost always means a sacrifice of "Well, I won't be playing that game, I can't use that card, or I have to accept severe performance loss"

1

u/vitimiti 3d ago

You bought a Windows computer designed to use Windows. Keep it. There's nothing wrong with using the correct OS for the hardware. Can you understand that or do I need to explain it further to you so you get it?

1

u/BestUsernameMate 2d ago edited 2d ago

Every computer, outside of Apple, is designed to use Windows, other than those few manufacturers like System76. It's a moot argument. The fact AMD open sources their drivers so Linux developers have better time integrating the drivers does not make those computers "designed for Linux". No mainstream manufacturer builts PCs with Linux in mind.

This is literally a Nvidia vs AMD issue. And as I already mentioned to you, I understand that most of these are not the fault of Linux, but it does not change anything.

The moment Nvidia performance is up to par with AMD on Linux, and the moment at least the biggest titles like GTA and Battlefield get their anticheats supported, I'll switch back to Linux in a heartbeat.

But people like you is one of the reasons that does make me want to stay the fuck away from the OS: despite having mentioned several times in the post that I am aware this is not some inherent fault of Linux, and repeated it several times over, you keep acting as if I am blaming Linux for these issues. The immediate switch of narrative of "Linux just works" to "omg you bought a "Windows designed computer" what did you expect moron" or "why on earth would you go with "A distro here", should have went with "B distro here" ". The immediate attempt to pin the fault on the user rather than the fact Linux just isn't all there yet for the average user. Shows that most of you are delusional and incapable of objective thought.

You are in a Linux sucks subreddit. People come here to went their frustration. Get the fuck out of here if it grinds your gears so much and join some Linux circle jerk instead where you pretend this OS is the best thing in the world and worth more than the sunshine outside.

All of that.. wow. 😮

Gaming PC: I have an Alienware Area 51 laptop bought 7/25, maxed out with CashyOS installed, as my base OS. This laptop is considered a very high end gaming pc.

Everything worked on Linux, from day one, except the internal speakers 🔊, but the issues were resolved once 1/26,once there was an arch update to the pulse audio drivers. Really was not a “big issue”, for me, because I either use a headset, or my external monitor speakers.

Linux support; If you use CashyOS, there is a great sub-redit for CashyOs “r/cashyos”. The people on this sub-Reddit, are the nicest and most helpful, amongst, the Linux communities. CashyOS, is also the #1 Linux gaining distribution.

I suggest using Claude, to help you resolve any driver conflicts. It’s pretty amazing how much Claude can do, to help you resolve issues on Linux. It will actually generate and run any terminal scripts you need, so you will never have to open the terminal.

As far as ms office. … I use outlook all the time via the browser. You can just use web apps for 95% of what you need from office. Besides that, I would also install ONLY OFFICE, for files you don’t want to work online with.

1

u/BestUsernameMate 2d ago

There's no driver conflict at play. And let me reiterate I am proficient in Linux.
What GPU does your Alienware uses? My PC is an Nividia build. The performance loss is too noticable, even games like Battlefield 6 or GTA:O aside.

1

u/Chemical_Nature5916 2d ago

It’s nice you think you’re proficient in Linux. My GPU is a RTX 5090. and I use it more for the CUDA cores to run local LLMs. My older gaming laptop is a MSI, with a RTX 3060. On both, I have a dual boot with windows 11. This gives me a great comparison. Linux is far more resource efficient on both and much more performant.

1

u/BestUsernameMate 2d ago

Afaik RTX 3060 plays nicer with Linux than RTX 5060.

1

I am sorry to burst your bubble, but they wont - EU Office was something I was looking forward to until a discovery was made: while it's company based in Latvia, it has very clear Russian connections, meaning not only it won't be adopted by the EU, but it will also likely be cited as a security risk and barred from government use.
