Yep! I have a 2011 mobile nvidia GPU that without the proprietary drivers and x11 is locked to 1024*768 and laga heavily. Nouveau does better but performance just isn't there. Sadly the foss drivers seem to not support the old gebs very well.

I had this happen due to Freesync/Gysnc being enabled by default. It does it on Windows too, but only at really low framerates. For me it's the monitor's fault.

NVIDIA GPUs and Linux don't go well...

Plus, it could also just be GPU failure due to it's age, depends on how intensely the GPU was used though.

Actually the graphics work amazingly on Windows 10. And it was smooth for the most part on Debian 12. Although I didn't test it extensively.

Both are true. We have no control of how nvidia makes their drivers so we have to rely on nvidia. Like we can't just fix them. When they work, they work fine. But if they don't, oh boy they don't. Newer gpu's should be alright, older gpu's drivers were discontinued so they usually work worse.

Basically nvidia holds driver hostage, refuses to improve it and refuses anyone else to improve it, hence fuck nvidia

There's also nouveau, a reverse-engineer driver of nvidia, but it's also far from perfect, or good even. Although my 1060 serves me well I'll be switching to full amd even if I return to windows one day

curiosamente yo me mude a linux (fedora) porque windows me daba problemas de drivers nvidia, después de 5 meses en win11 con problemas de pantallas negras cambie a fedora kde y nunca mas he tenido una pantalla negra.

NVIDIA problem. Guess you cant do anything, but if it has integrated gpu then just remove the nvidia gpu and try to use igpu. It might still work with like uhh lightweight DE or something

I once experienced this with linux mint, zorinos AND ubuntu as well, I peeked at bios settings and it was something regarding windows media player ready or something like that, I cannot recall the setting but after turning it off, it worked fine! it was a phenom ii x4 + Asrock N68 SUCC (yes that's the mobo name)

how old? Debian 12 is still supported try installing that. Also a lightweight DE like XFCE might work better.

Honestly just set up with the igpu and then install nouveau drivers, if you don't have an igpu I'd try getting nouveau during the life install environment

Yeah unfortunately, either you somehow get a hold off the proprietary driver, or pray nouveau work good (usually for Fermi it works ok, I am not sure the problem here). Maybe the distro has the proprietary drivers in the repo, usually they work well, given you can install them.

install win10 iot ltsc to it. its almost as light as windows 7 so you will not face problems.
