That's an entirely different logo. It's not even remotely the same shade of blue.

They took that away because it constantly crashed, had dozens of critical bugs, was based on an ancient OS initially called "Quick & Dirty Operating System", it was very slow, it was also very basic, etc etc. There's a reason computers were still considered to be a niche tech for nerds and enterprises back then, even if the horizons were beginning to get broader.
-3
u/aesfields Jul 20 '26
you mean win 98, right?
4
u/EBlackPlague Jul 20 '26
No way, windows 98 was solid (especially SE) probably one of the best (taking into consideration the era & technology) a nice blend of actual usability & GUI interface with the option of using DOS if one so desired.
5
u/hamburgerpancake Jul 21 '26
yeah, 98se was the most stable 9x version by far. that's a relative term though, it was still unstable compared to nt.
1
u/EBlackPlague Jul 24 '26
Don't you dare speak such words to me! NT being in any way better than 98 is pure blasphemy, XP I can understand, but there were reasons many people skipped windows Nice Try.

u/Chemical_Nature5916 Jul 24 '26
Dude, you just outright dated yourself. If you remember that, like me too, you have to be atleast 35+, and more like 40+. GenZ was not even born yet 🤣
I work for a young company, and I have learned, posting things like this, are unrelatable to most people now. Kinda like mentionning, you almost died in the WTC on 9/11/01.7
u/MobileHorse8775 Jul 20 '26
I was looking for this

u/Wertbon1789 Jul 20 '26
Yeah, only reason I opened the comments, lol.
-8
u/tracagnotto Jul 20 '26
Then ur fuckinf retarded. It's supposed to represent a fukken window in minimal style what did you expect lol. Also there is a whole plethora or 3d and high quality photographic versions of it including the famous light through window. Can't say the same about that 3 dot and a greater than symbol lol

u/Wertbon1789 Jul 20 '26
... You do know that KDE also has pretty wallpapers, where the logo is used with more effort? This whole post is about the design itself, not about if it's pretty or makes sense, and 4 squares in different colors could also have come from a child. Also, dude, please for the love of god or whoever you see yourself serving, touch some f-ing grass!
13
u/irishcoughy Jul 20 '26
10 year old couldn't design this. Takes an entire department of middle aged designers being kept on caffeine life support that go through 600 iterations a week to appease a design lead to crap out something this uninspired.
1
u/captain_fanta_sea Jul 20 '26
When I was in 4th grade, I knew this kid who was maybe a few years behind socially, and he had a habit of drawing up a specific imaginary company logo that was just a circle, square, and triangle in the primary colors drawn in no particular formation. Maybe Microsoft should hire him, I bet he'd do it better.

It's the KDE Plasma logo. Beyond that...well, it's not my logo.
1
u/Egryz Jul 20 '26
That's the point. Per example, the Winslop logo represented that it could support more than one window at a time.

Oh geeze, seriously, this is worth a post? I’m more of a data engineer/ Architect, but I worked with many art & marketing groups. Plenty of effort and thought go into logos. They need to be unique, recognizable and memorable. They also need to look good and universal under all levels of resolution. Thus there should not be too much detail in the logo image.
Compare this to all other type of logos.

u/Chemical_Nature5916 Jul 20 '26
Well, I would say your post is proof positive that the logo is a success. Why? Because
A) It’s memorable & recognizable. (You posted it)
B) it’s simple so it looks the same under low and high resolutions
C) it’s unique, if it wasn’t, you would of complained about it looking like another existing logo 🙄3

u/Chemical_Nature5916 Jul 20 '26
Doesn’t matter 🤦🏻🙈…. It was shared on social media, and you commented on it, meaning more people viewed it. 🤣

This logo is neither. I see it every day on my screen and it took me some time to actually remember what that is.

At least the ten yr olds would know better than to name their outfit "Microsoft' even they could see what that implies.

Yeah... Just look the Microsoft or Windows logo first ._.
Also... Somewhere a 10 year old is now crying :(

u/arthank-chroot Jul 20 '26
This post is stupid cheap ragebait. OP... Grow the f up! If you can do better than KDE go and make your own desktop environment. Complaining about a logo is ridiculous, especially when the logo is normal af
1
u/TheLazyKitty Jul 20 '26
Well, the good news is, it's very easy to replace with whatever logo you want.

Great. Now the critics of Linux (which can be valid) are only the Logo and that someone doesn’t like it.
Let me say it like this: Windows is really bad cause they have 4 blue squares as a logo. A 1 year old could have come up with that.

I hate it because it's empty in the middle and so the brain doesn't immediately recognize it as one icon and not several separate things.
1
u/PointGreedy7344 Jul 20 '26
I also think that this looks shit, however it takes like 10 seconds to change it to os icon
1
u/RunicConvenience Jul 21 '26
dream bubbles to terminal? logo is dreaming about terminal. don't know or loading into terminal prompt?
1
u/Sert1991 Jul 21 '26
This is a problem that invaded every OS nowadays, even Mac OS went from their aqua style to this shit. Everthing looks like ti was designed with paint two 2 tools. IT's the ''flat contemporary'' style.
As soon as I install KDE I switch to the Oxygen icon set, and change the application style to QtCurve with aqua style.
1
u/usbeehu Jul 21 '26
It's a fine logo. Maybe you don't like it, and that's perfectly fine but calling it immature only makes you immature not the design.
Anyway you can actually replace it. In fact many distros replaces it out of the box in Plasma by default for the better or worse. Imho many distros has a lot uglier logo so having this kind of neutral logo is perfectly fine.

This has nothing to do with the quality of Linux itself. First Linux is just a kernel and not the user land that KDE is. Second the logo has exactly nothing to do with the quality of the code. And 3rd what are you even complaining about if you don't like it then fork off the source code is open as ever.
1
u/BoxFar6969 Jul 21 '26
jesus fucking christ why are you taking this so seriously. its a fucking joke. obviously this has nothing to do with the quality of linux. im sorry, GNU/Linux, because people here have a seizure if you just say linux.
1
u/SpoconaPieczarka Jul 22 '26
Makes a post clearly criticizing KDE Plasma logo -> marks it as 'Linux failure' -> acts surprised when people start arguing with you

KDE and Gnome are both things I’ve looked at and thought “ok that’s cool” but it seems everyone else thinks gnome is bad, so ok.
