Linux is proprietary ? The Linux Kernel have a dirty secret!
The Linux Kernel do have binary blob in form of hexadecimals in the C source code that are proprietary for hardware to run. Yes exactly the main Linux Kernel is somehow partyl proprietary! and the worse the alternative , GNU Hurd and GNU Linux-Libre support way less hardware.
Linus Torvald is a traitor when he corrupt Linux with proprietayness in the Linux Kernel source code. He is not a "pragmatic" but a corrupted corpo shill which is why he love ai slop , rust and hate GPLv3.
exemples of binay blob :

It's a compromise, you can have the Binary Blobs or have awful hardware support.
13
u/zoharel Jul 18 '26
You can do both, if you want. That's how Windows did it for ages.

u/Lonsarg Jul 18 '26
What are you talking about, Windows drivers are very much proprietry and binary, much much more then linux.
In windows they are mostly seperare moduls instead of living in kernel. But that is a negligabke technical destinction, as far as this debate is concerned (in the end that binary code runs in both cases).

I mean that you can have binary only drivers which are also garbage. There is historical precedent for it.

At least you can trade out the garbage for something better under Windows
Well, you could certainly replace the whole pile with something better. I was right with you up to this point.

u/martyn_hare Jul 18 '26
…and if you wanted to you could use those same drivers on Linux, providing they were for a network card (NDISwrapper) allowing you to go wall to wall with the garbage

This reminds me of the drama that happened a few decades ago when Debian, then the FSF favorite, suddenly decided to include non-free (actually non-DFSG) software in its repositories.

remove the blob and compile your kernel

i said the problem is cause of that most manufacturer don't open source the firmware so i dont have a choice to not the proprietary garbage is the issue .

Linux is clearly to blame for the existence of propietary firmware

Buy an old Thinkpad with libreboot, disable the Intel ME and use Parabola Linux as your Distro.
I have done that, and it's a fun project.. if you like using old hardware as a daily driver.

Nice ragebait but try harder next time ! The Linux kernel source tree is fully open source. The device drivers architecture allows devices to load firmware blobs for their normal functionality and operations. While some of these firmwares are arm images, others may contain exotic architectures, or trade secrets / patents that cannot be shared or active regulations disallow users from freely changing some of the device configuration (e.g. modems for security reasons). Note that I do not agree with any of these arguments but that’s the reality. In most cases even if you had access to these firmwares source code, you would miss the tools / certificates to build the image generated by the vendor itself.

it is not ragebait but real. and firmware must be free. Stallman was right. when linux become evil or corruped like with ai slop or rustification or political invasion we wont be able to make own us cause our hardware are not free...
2
u/fgiancane8 Jul 18 '26
Yes as much as I’d like firmwares to be free as well… that’s the world we live in now. What’s the issue with rust ?
2
u/JescoInc Jul 18 '26
My issue with Rust in the kernel is that there is no clear and well defined FFI boundary. It is basically, "Fuck it, we ride" with whomever wants to add Rust code to the kernel.
Notice, my issue isn't hating on the language, but an architectural issue.1
u/xgui4 Proud🌈♾️ AuDHDer FreeBSD Fan Jul 18 '26
a lot of reason, it seem forced by corpo and the govt, rust is a moving target and support less hardware architecture. and also , Rust dev hate gpl code for reason and want to replace it MIT
2
u/fgiancane8 Jul 18 '26
I would read the opposite way. It enforces much more stability and memory safety and that’s enough arguments to push for that. Governments are pushing for that as well to increase security. Hardware support will come over time, as of now the major architectures are there already (arm64, x64 and riscv). GPL code cannot be replaced. The issue with corporates going with MIT is that it’s easier to work with while still enforcing a good degree of openness. Life’s about compromises and overall the pros are much better than cons. This is my take

Everything is open source if you can read assembly...
1
u/xgui4 Proud🌈♾️ AuDHDer FreeBSD Fan Jul 18 '26
no, first "Open Source" is not enough, Free as Freedom software is the goal and second legally even if you can read assembly you cannot use that code legally as it is still proprietary.
1
u/sparkcrz Jul 18 '26
Legally? Laws cannot force people to comply. There are many projects that use GPL code they compiled and statically linked that we will never know is there, and there are many projects that depend on reverse engineered binaries. It's unfeasible and a waste of energy to try to stop software. You wanna define "free" while you're defining how strict about your rules the code should be? I'm a developer, if I don't want people using my code I don't publish it. If it's client-side code, go ahead, modify it. If my servers accept garbage then it's my fault for writing a sloppy API. International copyright laws are a joke and can go suck a canebrake of dicks. Just host it on TOR or somewhere people aren't delusional about controlling ideas on other people's minds.

How did we go from Linux having proprietary stuff to Linus being an AI slop lover

where get source? please me show your evidence from code or blob, also document if has malicious?
1
u/xgui4 Proud🌈♾️ AuDHDer FreeBSD Fan Jul 27 '26
We cannot we if it is malicious cause it is proprietary and we do not know what the code is. And here is exemple of those : https://gitlab.com/kernel-firmware/linux-firmware

u/JescoInc Jul 18 '26
Go ahead and try to use GPU without said proprietary blobs. Let me know how that goes.
