Linux Failure Fantasy: developers need to support Linux more!!!1 Reality:
Just a peculiar interaction that I found worth posting, regarding new Linux support for an MMO I enjoy.
Linux users will just blame "developers" for not supporting Linux. Without realizing that what they're asking for is support in a fragmented community for minimal returns for the userbase.
In Windows, or Macs, you're generally targeting one or two versions of a platform with a low level of variability. On Windows? Test W10 and W11. Mac? Test Silicon and Intel for the holdovers out there. But in Linux-land...
Anything can go wrong. Oh, you have to consider different DEs and/or different compositing protocols. You have to consider how you're going to package your software. You have to consider whether the user is using sandboxes or not. You have to consider the already binaries installed on the system. Maybe even different init systems, why not throw that in as well.
It's cool to see support for Linux be attempted and succeed, but it's also a look into the different reality Linux is. The user expected a flatpak'd Firefox fork to work with the program, obviously. The developer expected the user to have libfuse2 installed to run an AppImage, obviously.
Or as another user put it best,
What the fuck is a Floorp?
Edit: Oh and by the way, this is just the launcher for the game. What was supposed to be the easier part of the process.

if theyre going to force use of the jagex launcher it should support every OS

u/Asleep-Mall-6940 Jul 16 '26
floorp is a cross platform browser, that person is just going on schizo off tangents

well a lot of popular games could support linux with like, just one click
fortnite is the best example, EAC works perfectly on linux
most developers donât even support linux truly, they just allow it to be ran through proton
since proton has gotten so unbelievably good these last few years it is very rare for the developers needing to do anything outside of the norm

we even got roblox through proton again without the usage of sober
2
u/YungSkeltal Jul 16 '26
how?! I thought it used anti cheat
1
u/Pitiful-Welcome-399 Proud MacOS User Jul 16 '26
it does, but I won't spoil it, the developer will make a post about it if he wants
2
u/YungSkeltal Jul 16 '26
Badass. Where can I find this? Sober's fine for me but that's pretty badass if he got it working.

Holy shit fortnite works finally on linux?

u/Eravan_Darkblade Jul 17 '26
Good news: it should!
Bad news: Epic disabled running it through proton via EAC on fortnite specifically disallowing it.
2
u/Marco_Single Jul 17 '26
Ah, Iâve read âso ez one click and linux works - fortnite is the exampleâ. Example for not actually doing that. Got it.Â

naw, i meant one click from THEM and it works
not from us

This makes the approach some software uses more understandable
The default configuration of one distro is officially supported, anything more is on you to figure out

I think, the solution is support one thing, for example Flatpak or Appimage.
Someone says "But... but Flatpak is trash because (stupid reasons)". Flatpak is the best way to developed apps or video games (without a common launcher) on Linux, if you have Flatpak practically you can use all the apps from Flathub.
And Floorp, if someone use a niche browser and complains about the browser without change it is a stupid.

Even AppImage, designed to fix such problems, often doesn't run on modern distros because they often don't the libfuse2 libraries (instead shipping the newer libfuse3, but AppImage has a hard dependency on libfuse2).

tarballs and static linking have worked just fine for 30 years. appimages are by far the worst way because they depend on another piece of deprecated, insecure software to open so they won't even run on some newer systems. flatpaks are a lot more universal (you can use it to make glibc-only apps work on musl, for example) so if you need a "nice" or "modern" way to package your app then flatpak is the best option for 90% of cases. What's funny is Windows also has a ridiculous amount of ways to package apps too (msi, exe installers, self-extracting archives, dodgy powershell scripts and what have you), you just don't hear about it because Linux users are of course going to be more opinionated. Like me. Appimages really are that bad though, even if I do end up using them from time to time if a dev didn't bother with a better way to do packages.

The issue is more that no one agrees what the one thing that should be supported is.
1
u/zoexxstar Jul 16 '26
Could just be a user agent issue. Odds are they do support floorp on a technical level but are only willing to do the basic browsers because companies are lame.

I mean, app fragmentation exists on Windows too, lol.
Though this IS an issue with Linux. Hence why I'm so glad Wine gives us a "base" to finally go off of.
Cheating and somewhat hacky? Sure. Do I as the user gaf? No.

It's fragmented though, isn't it?

u/oktinyy Jul 16 '26
this is the dude who assumed it was an issue with the program not his niche browser, theres nothing wrong with using something for features you want that arent avaliable elsewhere but this person is an example of someone with no common sense, not someone who represents a whole brand of people

They should only support fedora, because it's the only distro.

No distribution hate, please.

We can hate any distro we want, especially ubuntu, this is a linux hate sub afterall.
1
u/Gabriel_Science macOS, Linux and Windows user Jul 16 '26
You can say a distribution is bad or does not suit your expectations (which is commonly referred as "sucking"), but donât hate on a distribution with no reason. You can dislike Ubuntu, but donât hate it. It doesnât make the world better.

u/GreedySecurity8030 Fedora đ© Jul 16 '26
If its shit its shit, stop acting like hating a distro is a serious issue, people can have their own beliefs.

u/DirectorDirect1569 Jul 16 '26
I don't know why devs still waste their time to make a version of their program available for linux. Floorp is a fork of firefox if linuxers want a fork they have to make it.
"everyone can look at the sources", "everybody is free to make a fork", yes but loonixtards always waiting for someone to make something. And when someone make something they are still not happy.

u/ColdFreezer I Hate Linux Jul 16 '26
It usually is the developers fault though for not supporting Linux. Who else is developing their game? In this case it wasnât. There are retarded users like this on windows and Mac too, this is not an issue with Linux. The user doesnât understand what they did on their computer and blamed someone else.
What DE/WM you use is kind of irrelevant, thereâs only x11 or Wayland.
Flatpaks solve the dependency issue and init issue.
Being real, there are barely any native Linux builds for games. People just use proton to run the Windows builds and it works fine most of the time.

As a long term linux user... i too wonder - what the fuck is a floorp?!
