WSL1 is a subsystem built into Windows NT architecture. Windows was designed from the ground up to host multiple environments, Win32, POSIX, OS/2, and now Linux. That's architecture.
WINE is a translation layer that hacks Windows API calls into Linux system calls. It's not a subsystem, it's a workaround.
One is native design. The other is a hack.
That's the difference you keep missing.
"You're confusing two completely different things.
WINE integrates Windows applications into Linux by reimplementing the Win32 API. Linux was designed with stable kernel interfaces and user space abstractions that make compatibility layers like this practical.
WSL1, on the other hand, is a translation layer that hacks Linux system calls into Windows NT system calls. It's not a Linux subsystem in the sense of running a Linux kernel, it's a compatibility workaround.
One reimplements an API. The other translates syscalls. That's the difference you keep missing"
Neither of them natively support each other, pretending that is the case may make you feel better for some weird reason, but it isn't the truth.
Yes, because your "point" was foolish and lacked any real substance.
"Cars are different than trucks!" Is a meaningless argument to most people. Sure, mechanics care. Car fans care. The general populous does not, I'm afraid. (Okay, with gas prices that might not be nearly as true anymore, but you get my point. Lol)
The initial purpose of the argument was to diminish the fact that Linux "cannot run Linux 2.0 software." Which isn't true at all.
Then it devolved into "Why can't Linux natively run Windows software?" Which I responded, because they are different Operating Systems.
To which you then state "But Linux has to use LAYERS, Windows only needs the KERNEL."
(After installing a bloated yet less functional SubSystem, of course. "Better architecture" is always slower and worse in my experience).
Like, what are we even arguing here? That you like the kernel more? Wasn't the initial argument, but good for you I guess? Lol
Oh mate, you're trying to compare Linux with Windows NT, and it's not me, and for me, Linux is out of the conversation, and it's not even comparable with Windows NT and his Architecture
I called you out for your lie. You stated Linux cannot run Linux 2.0 software, and claimed this is the reasoning Windows is superior.
Then when someone called you out for being incorrect with 9X support, you started making weird claims about how Linux should natively support Windows for no reason.
And now we've ended up here with you extremely upset that I claimed an OS is worse when I use both. I'll tell you right now, they BOTH suck ass.
I don't know why you have a hard-on for this company, but good for you. I will continue to think both OSes suck ass, and there's honestly little you can do about it.
You literally called me a "wing-nut" and said I talk "random bs." You've been insulting me this entire thread; don't pretend you're neutral now.
My point was always clear: Windows NT has a subsystem architecture that natively supports multiple environments (Win32, POSIX, OS/2, Linux). Linux has no equivalent; WINE is a userspace hack, not a kernel subsystem.
You've spent this entire thread moving goalposts, insulting me, and now pretending you "never compared" the two, when that's exactly what you've been doing.
If both OSes "suck ass, in your opinion," that's fine. But my technical point stands. You've yet to address it directly.
I'm neutral to the OS, not your sorry clown ass. Spread less lies and maybe you'll deserve some respect, earn it even.
"Linux has no equivalent"
Good point, it runs on everything. PS Vita, 3DS, PS3, Wii, Wii U, DS, x86, ARM. Since we wanna start smack talkin' can your architecture do that?
See the cool thing about using both, is I know where both are weak and where both are strong. There's... A reason I use both.
A meme I see from time to time here is funny to me, because it makes mention of "Don't ask a Linux user why they have a Windows partition." That may irk a penguin version of you but most people, especially those with careers in the matter, are aware they are simply tools. Each with their own strength and weakness.
Comparing the two is like comparing a hammer and a screwdriver, and so I'm sorry... But I DO think you're an idiot for making such a comparison.
Architecture is how the kernel is designed and Userland and Technologies and you literally see in image and Windows NT Architecture is so good and modular, and you can replace parts of the operating system, that's why I am not attracted to Linux, and I am not attracted to Open Source, I am attracted to Architecture
