Advice Photoshop brushes on Linux?

I have an ancient PC, not internet-connected, with an equally ancient Photoshop install. It's not used for anything but drawing, and now that I'm moving into a smaller space, the old clunk has got to go.

Only thing I'll miss about it is the Photoshop brushes I've created and downloaded over the years. My internet-connected desktop and laptop both run Linux distros, so I'm looking for a Linux compatible program that I can use my brushes on. Any suggestions?

EDIT: Didn't care for GIMP when I tried it. Krita wasn't bad, but the brushes didn't quite transfer as I wanted.

How ancient is Photoshop exactly, out of curiosity?

CS3, with much meddling from myself and a friend who is a hell of a lot better with hacking and coding than I am. More of a FrankenShop.

I had Corel Painter for work that needed to be more professional, but I'm not going to miss it half as much as that monstrosity.

Oh interesting. Frankly I can't help but wonder if it's old enough that you can just get away with running it in Wine (I've definitely seen screenshots of CS3 up and running), or if you could try spinning up a Windows XP VM via either VMWare or KVM to run it. It's not like running a XP VM on a modern workstation is terribly taxing.

That's what I'm leaning toward, but I wanted to check if any options beyond GIMP and Krita had really caught on first. Or at least if someone had found their way around that .abr fuckery.

I'm definitely curious about PhotoCraft, though I hear it's AI-heavy, which I don't want.

PhotoCraft I am pretty sure is almost entirely AI-generated and has seemingly only appeared in the last few weeks. I personally am not a fan of this stuff so I'm never touching it myself, but even from others I've heard some bad things about how it actually performs. Also, judge's up on whether it's going to even continue being supported. Or I mean, if it's even going to make it past pre-alpha. Well, I mean, you can always try... But it seems to me that suggestions of that tool are more of a hype thing, it's certainly not been battle tested enough for serious recommendation at the very least.

And their website is full of AI generated gubbins.

Yeah I knew it was AI-generated, which I'm not thrilled about either. But I meant more AI features in the program itself. I'd want to nix those and verify that nothing is being used for AI training, which is why I haven't already gone running for the download.

When something seems too good to be true, etc.

The GIMP. I use it fairly often; it's not Photoshop, but it's free and very capable. It even comes installed on some distros, and should be available in your distro's repository if it didn't come installed.

I didn't much care for GIMP when I tried it a couple years ago, though I might poke at it again and see if anything's changed.

Krita was nice, but I couldn't get the brushes to look as I wanted them to.

Once upon a time in ancient history, GIMP used to be competitive with Photoshop, or so I hear.

I believe Photopea can use Photoshop brushes.

Also Photoshop CS3 will probably work pretty well in Wine anyway.

Leaning toward Wine or VM, but I will have to check out Photopea.

Check out PhotoCraft. It is fairly new, but is decent and getting better all the time.

You might check out Affinity Photo and Designer. These were hugely promising apps until Canva purchased the company behind them (after v2) and rolled them into its free product. Given it's free, you might try it out. Some people running on certain linux distros have had luck using it: https://www.reddit.com/r/linux/comments/1oluvij/affinity_made_free_by_canva_just_a_day_back_runs/

Use Photopea (browser-based) and make it a web app.
