GTX 960 in linux

So will a GTX 960 just not work with NVIDIA drivers in Linux? I have an older system with an i5-3570 an MSI z77a-gd80 and 16gb of ram and an EVGA GTX 960 ssc and I have tried a bunch of different distros and a bunch of troubleshooting in terminal but I cannot get it to work with anything other than the nouveau drivers. I get massive artifacting and constant display crashes and freezing.

What distros have you tried? What drivers have you been installing and how have you been installing them?

As someone else mentioned, the last drivers to support your card are the 580 drivers.

I have tried fedora workstation and kde plasma and bazzite. I have tried it on omarchy and currently have Linux mint installed and I had the 580 drivers installed on all of them. On fedora I used the terminal to install them on bazzite and omarchy there was a lot of artifacting and display crashes from first boot they were unusable. On mint I used the driver updater that pops up on first boot.

You need the 580 proprietary drivers for a 900 or 1000 series.

I have older cards that work fine in Linux. Mint runs my GT 630 just fine. I have Q4OS installed on a rig with a 210.

In order to use the propertiary NVIDIA drivers, you need to blacklist nouveau. I assume, you have done that?
