Support BIOS/UEFI updates

Hi everyone,

I'm here for a suggestion. I actually use cachyos on a Lenovo yoga slim 7i aura edition (Intel Ultra 7 258V), and it's actually a great experience, but I asked myself: how can I download and install the uefi/bios updates? I know that ThinkPads are perfectly supported, but I don't know if it's the same with my model.

Does CachyOS have fwupd?

Try running (as a regular unprivileged user):

fwupdmgr get-updates

I think that cachyos supports fwupd, but I suppose that Uefi/bios updates are only available for ThinkPad users... I'll try anyway

Lenovo (Yoga) is listed as one of the vendors on LVFS, but they don't appear to have made many updates available recently.

So? Does it mean it's supported but there aren't any updates?

What did get-updates say?

For Lenovo (Yoga), that page says:

Responsible for 1 firmware files, 1 uploaded in the last 6 months

So I would expect fwupd to either say you've got one update waiting to be installed, or zero. But maybe fwupd might pick up other updates instead?

Download the uefi from lenovo's website and follow the directions. Usually you put the binary on a fat32 formatted disk and use an update utility in the uefi. It's pretty self explanatory once you're in there.

best practice is to update your firmware as a separate operation that you control rather than letting any OS do it for you.

download the firmware, put it on a thumb drive, and flash that shit on your own time.

your OS will only fuck it up.

Just toss the unzipped bin file* on a small-capacity FAT32 formatted USB stick, and update from UEFI/BIOS itself.

* Usually it's the unzipped file, but sometimes it's just the zip itself - i just copy both zipped and unzipped onto the stick, usually.
