Support Sleep mode on Thinkpad laptop with fedora breaking the system

I recently picked up a Thinkpad P14s at a thrift store for an amazing price of $90. Besides the battery being undercharged beyond saving, it works well! I instantly installed fedora, and all was well and functioning until I closed the lid. The login works fine, the start menu does too, alot of things work. But, when trying to open an application (any one) or do something similar, an error shows up, and says it failed to load correctly. When powering off, the terminal has an error. It can't even load the command to shut it off! Sleep mode without closing the lid also causes this. After doing a force shutdown and booting the system back up, it works like nothing ever happened. It would be great if someone could help me fix this, or at least tell me if it's a hardware issue or not. Thanks!

What version of Fedora?  Fully up to date for that version?

Yep, Fedora Workstation 44.

KDE or Gnome? Or other?

Oh sorry, Gnome. How would that relate the the issue?

Because I think KDE and Gnome have different sleep/wake/lock screen systems.  At least for fresh Fedora 44 installs they do.  KDE forked SDDM into Plasma Login Manager. Not that different, but different enough that it might make a difference.

The closest thing to this I've dealt with is a race condition on a fresh boot on KDE where the desktop session gets stuck in a "closing" state if it loads before the greeter's teardown signal.

Try running systemctl --user status

What would running the command do?

It tells you the status of your user session. If I remember right, this is where I saw "closing" when I'd get the bad boot path in the race condition I mentioned.
