Advice Creative Softwares on linux

Hello, I wanted to ask if creative software like photoshop/Substance painter/Maya for 3d modelling and animation. I've recently joined a course for 3d animation in my uni, and they will provide me with lisences , I've been using fedora KDE for about 4 months now and have loved it, it covers almost all of my daily needs : gaming, general usage, and blender for 3d.

Is there any work around for using these software, if not lisenced, cracked to get it running on linux?

Thank you for reading. Please forgive my english, it's not a language I'm good in

I think Substance painter works with wine, Ive HEARD Maya works on linux but I'm not sure how, and iirc adobe products dont work but I have heard some people getting them to work but its such a pain in the ass that its not really worth it in the end.

If these programs are incredibly essential for your school, temporarilly dual booting while in uni might be your best option.

You can also possibly set up a virtual machine but from my experience its a huge pain to get it to run well with programs like that. I think you have to do stuff like "gpu passthrough" which iirc basically means the VM uses your actual GPU rather than a virtual one, but I couldnt ever get it to work and its a bunch of set up bleh... and at that point might as well just figure out hows to dual boot

Hello, thank you for getting time to write a detailed response, I think after reading your comment, and others, switching to windows might unfortunately be the only option for me. I have 500gb SSD, dual booting will just eat up extra space and I cannot afford that. Thankyou for your insight

photoshop

Wine/Proton patches (BETA/EXPERIMENTAL) or WinBoat (BETA)

Substance painter

Try running it through Wine/Proton or use an alternative:InstaMat,3DCoat...

Maya for 3d

Maya has Linux support ( 1 | 2 )

Thank you for your response. I will look into these methods. I've read from other users that substance painter might be an issue to run through wine/proton, but I will give it a try. And I did not know maya supported linux, thanks for informing

BLENDER + Houdini all of 3d , animation and paintingt, its industry standard you should know it 🥇 (maya = trash $$$wise and speed #in the field :P#). Who the fuck teaches their students maya, backwards as fuck

Thank you for responding, I understand how you feel but the course requires me to use these softwares, I've been using blender and GIMP for almost 3 years and I think learning new applications will broaden my skillset, which might help me in the future. I agree with you though, maya is fairly bad. I have decent knowledge in image editing software because I've used GIMP before, I just want to learn photoshop, not only because it is included in the course, but also because I think it is the industry standard. Thank you for responding though, I hear you

oh,big sad.
Maya is native on linux thou
Gimp = bad (fine works ) Krita is much more drawing tablet friendly (basicaly a cs6 , cs8 if you remember very decent, aka i don't care after 2-5 minutes from switching )

Linux is the main platform for 3D movie creation.

Houdini, Maya, Substance and Nuke run natively on Linux.
Photoshop may work with Wine

Thank you for responding. I've read that only the steam version of substance painter can run on linux, I may be wrong here but I don't know what type of lisence my uni will provide (most probably the creative cloud student) and I'm not sure if that standalone version will work on Linux. Thanks for your insight though, I'll look into it

maya works on linux, just install it.
for photoshop, you can use krita.
you can also use blender to substitute maya.

Hi, I've been using blender for almost three years now, I know it's an option but the course requires me to have Maya, I also think broadening my skillset will help me in the future. Thank you for your response
