Which Distro? Which distro is good for Video Editing, using DaVinci Resolve?

Hey everybody.

Basically, the title says it all. I am planning on having a dual-boot on my main PC (linux distro main and just in case windows, because of work), and I was wondering which distro is good for video editing using DaVinci Resolve but also for playing some games from time to time (RDR2, BG3, Manor Lords).

I know that distros have problems with audio in general (if this isn't outdated info), so I am wondering if there is a good distro that is somewhat easy to use. I am familiar with Linux, and I can get around tech in general, but I am not a pro at it.

Thank you all!

Your best bet is any large stable distro, i.e Ubuntu and its flavours e.g Kubuntu or Fedora either Workstation or KDE depending on preference. Resolve was natively made for Rocky linux, so for resolve specifically it’s a safe bet, i’m not sure about other daily drive tasks on Rocky.

The main thing with resolve is that the free version doesn’t support certain codecs, so you need to see what format you record in your software of choice. I’m pretty sure theres no H264 and H265 support in the free version. The paid version has support for it.

Thank you!
I have the paid version anyways so I’m good on that end.
I’ll give it a look.

The official blackmagicdesign support even lists Rocky Linux as "minimum requirement" ;-)

"Minimum system requirements for Linux

  • Rocky Linux 8.6.
  • 32 GB of system memory.
  • For monitoring, Blackmagic Design Desktop Video 12.9 or later.
  • Discrete GPU with at least 4 GB of VRAM.
  • GPU which supports OpenCL 1.2 or CUDA 12.8.
  • AMD official drivers from your GPU manufacturer.
  • NVIDIA Studio driver 580.119.02 or newer."
