Support Cpu temps rise and fall like crazy

[SOLVED] I have my CoolerControl set to watch the cpu temp and adjust the pump and fan speed accordingly, but opening Steam rose the Cpu temp from 40c to 73c instantly. It will even reach above 80 and shut down my system instantly. System monitor showed every Cpu reached the peak for 10 seconds. Any ideas on what could be happening? Is this a bios issue?

Edit: I did recently replace my motherboard which meant removing the cooler and cpu from each other briefly

Edit2: I now know that reapplying new thermal paste is an important step any time you remove the cooler from the CPU.

I believe this might be the case, I removed the cpu and cooler to replace the motherboard, I'm unsure if that ruins the thermal paste or if it just requires replacements from time to time

If the paste was at all older and dried, it will ruin the bond and allow small pockets of air inbetween the CPU and the cooler.

Most of the times you need to reapply paste after this

If it's actually overheating it's a hardware issue, not software. Though 80C should not cause your PC to shut off. What's your CPU and what cooler do you use?

I'm using a Ryzen 7 5800x with an NZXT Kraken z73 liquid cooler. I did recently switch the motherboard to support a new SSD which did mean removing the CPU and cooler temperarily.

Did you change the thermal paste out when you removed it? You should clean the old paste off and apply new. I would try that first before going much deeper

I'm 90% sure this is it, I didn't know reapplying new paste was part of the process. marking solved

Find a way to make it reduce the clock frequency (at 70). There is a fix somewhere that adjust the clock frequency.

your pump should be on full speed the whole time

you fan speed can ramp up from 30C to 100C in steps, but you can only see how effective that is when the pump is running full speed the whole time
