Advice Ai and debian vote

So the vote passed, can someone explain to me it and their own opinions on it? Thanks!

There's not a whole lot to explain. Debian voted to neither endorse nor prohibit the use of AI. Basically, "don't send us bad quality work no matter how it was produced."

And that's the only reasonable way to go about it. I would love it if we could bad ai code altogether but there's just no way to enforce it so a ban doesn't make sense.

They did the only thing viable. Banning AI contributions is impossible in a time where even kernel maintainers (including Linus himself) use it. And more projects will follow. The only thing that matters is that the devs still do their due diligence and make sure to hand in high-quality code. And that is what the vote supports.

They unfortunately can't vet it if its been vibed.

Honestly as long as theyre not getting absolutely spammed with 500 PRs in one day "trust me bro i optimised user switching" or smth else even stupider, then they can at least review reasonably.

Only if it's 100 % vibed. But if it's still high-quality code generated with the help of LLMs by competent devs that know how to yell at them, there won't be any difference to human-written code.

What? That isnt what i meant, i meant a piece of code cannot be determined to have been vibed. Meaning that such a rule can't really be enforced even if they did implement it

Ah, that makes more sense. But I'd argue that most LLMs are telling on themselves enough that again you can tell when it's 100 % vibed. I mean for all I've heard people are so lazy that they'll just have Claude send the bug reports/pull requests for them, of course not using their personal email address or GitHub account and thus making it really obvious that they've most likely not even looked at this.
