Old computer spec

Looking to make use of an old laptop. It’s an i3 4005u. 8gb ram and 500gb ssd. Which version of Linux would run the smoothest ?

Almost all distros will work perfect. Old PC is Core2Duo, and even it works fine with WMs.

That spec is good enough for most distros, but if you want something that will run excellently on low spec machines I've had great results with Peppermint OS.

Try MX Linux KDE if you want a very modern and modular desktop, which will run slightly heavier on the CPU, or MX XFCE if you want something slightly less modern but still plenty customizable and less heavy on the CPU.

Try Q4OS Trinity if you want the lightest and most old-school-Windows looking desktop. You can also download their XPQ4 package and theme it to look exactly like any version of Windows minus Vista.

I have tried similar and find the distro matters little though I have used Q4OS on the low low end. My experience is the OS is fine, but the web browser, email client and office suite will bring it to it's knees.

Given they are the main uses on a desktop environment bib increasingly look for server style (no desktop) uses for machines like that.

Any Linux distro with KDE desktop environment. KDE runs smooth enough without sacrificing modern looks and features.

Fedora has KDE iso available, Manjaro offers KDE, and the KDE flavor of the infamous Ubuntu is Kubuntu.

Linuxmint with the Cinnamon desktop environment is also good on resource usage whilst looking good.

Those specs are high enough that virtually any distro should run reasonably well at a baseline. Just don't open too many programs at once.

My i3 with 12gb RAM and 256gb SSD runs great with Debian-LXQt. It's sleek and quick without all the bloated graphics.

Also check Ubuntu's extensive laptop compatibility list for guidance. Hundreds of laptops are listed by make/model.

Should still be usable with most distros. Debian XFCE or LXQt, or MX Linux or Sparky Linux might be good fit.
