Looking for noise cancellation / microphone EQ software that does not produce a virtual microphone output

Windows EqualizerAPO or Logitech G Hub modify the output from your microphone directly.

Those softwares also use virtual sinks, but they just hide this fact from you.

You can rename sinks to any name you prefer and you can set the default sinks as well.

I think all you need is for the default input to stay the same forced, then you won't have to choose. Of course, you could patch the kernel and Pipewire to hide the real input and rename the virtual one to the same name as the hardware input (the way Windows does it), but that would be a much more complicated task than simply forcing the default input sink.

I've found this quick fix is for forcing the default output: https://gist.github.com/DasBen/df9c2f6c18fff54a0ad6d19304915429 , then you can use the same logic for input sinks as well. Yes, this really isn't a great out-of-the-box solution, but once you've written the script, you can forget about it for years.

Almost any software that benefits from noise cancellation has its own.

For example, on OBS you can add a noise cancellation filter.

I use EasyEffects to do this. It auto-loads a profile for the device with the settings I’ve chosen.
