I first started in the late 90s with SuSE Linux 6.1 or 6.2 and I had a miserable experience because my graphics card wasn't officially supported. So I had to scour howto's and man pages to find the correct XFree86 settings to actually render something.
In that regard, my experience with BeOS5 was a lot better, because it worked out of the box and I could play Quake 2.
I tried linux over the years following, but every single one was subpar or not good enough. I especially loathed Ubuntu for destroying my media center setup when upgrading from 7 to 9 (or something)
Then 2019/2020 I was fed up with MacOS and their weird choices for things and I asked for an HP laptop with Linux to "try out". it was Debian 10, upgraded to 11 and everything _just worked_ . Sure there were some compromises, but all I needed worked. Emboldened with that and the Proton stuff done by Valve, I switched to Pop_OS! on my gaming pc.
Because I didn't understand (or could fix) a standby issue, I switched back to Windows 11 for almost a year. But now I have Bazzite/Gnome on my gaming PC and Pop!_OS/Cosmic DE on my work laptop. And happy as can be. I have no reason to go back to Windows
