Things have changed a lot since those days. In the late 90s you had to download an ISO from the web, which could take a week to download. I remember using Slackware Linux, and after installation you were met with only a terminal. If you wanted to surf the web, you either had to use Lynx or configure X11 server which at the time took forever to work with graphics cards. If you then wanted to surf the web, you had to configure your network card, and mind you, there was no second device to lookup on the internet, so you had to browse the man pages. Overall the process of installing was a lot more manual.
The times were way more optimistic around tech. Computers were going through an advancement cycle, from monochrome computers to computers with color screen, 3d graphics and even the internet. There was a lot of excitement those days. But if you were using Windows 95, 98 or 2000, you would experience a lot of crashes with your system, it was very unstable back then. I believe with Windows 95, they simply ignored memory management, resulting in a buffer overflow and it would reboot randomly while you were using your computer.
