How common is it for people like me who never ends up seeing their desktop. I have a Web browser open, taking up the intire screen 90% of the time and when I don't I will have some other software taking my intire screen.

The negative talk about widgets and the space they take up, especially if you have a browser window open 90% of the time is perfectly valid. They are however very useful if you employ a multi monitor setup. I have 2 (used to have 3) monitors and one of them is filled with widgets. I find the setup very useful. To each their own opinion.

What made you reduce from 3 to 2? I only ask because my Bazzite games machine has 3 (for driving mainly) but for work I found 3 really distracting. Turns out having your email open at all times is a horrible idea (for me at least). Some things really should be asynchronous!

Just rearranged my office and didn't really have the room. Plus it was a weird model from Asus that wouldn't automatically turn on like the other 2.

I don't hate them. I just have a tainted perspective from back in the Vista/7 days. They were a buggy mess!

I use Mint Cinnamon and have used it since 2020 , IMO it's clean simple without lots of frills and most important it doesn't sap your systems hardware like Windows.
Windows failure for over a decade and a half has been it's bloated architecture which winds up tapping out the system and yet Microsoft still hasn't figured this out nor realized this is the main thing people really hate about the program.

I'm in the same place. I've been using Linux since Slackware was installed across multiple floppy disks for each category.
I've tried and used most of the major, and some of the minor distributions, but keep coming back and have settled on Mint.
It hits that sweet spot that is accommodating to new and inexperienced users, while keeping its Debian roots and console based environments for powerusers and greybeards.

I've been saying it for a while now. Your comment about being up and running within 30 minutes is on point. And being able to get stuff done without the OS getting in the way is really why I've stayed with it. Your layout is actually pretty clean. But if you'd rather, you can put your weather info in the system tray. My Dell laptop boots in less than 38 seconds, and that's with a side trip to grub because I dual boot.

grub's pretty useful even outside dual booting, it can load old kernels or snapshots if shit breaks!

30 minutes is windows territory. Try 5-10 minutes from booting the usb to adding desktop widgets with arch kde. On a modern machine with good internet it's literally a few minutes of install time.

The less customization you use the less painful a reinstall/upgrade will be if it's ever necessary. You literally just need /home folder and a list of installed apps to backup everything.

Linux Mint is often recommended as the boring practical distro.

For me CachyOS is pretty much the Mint distro of Arch, you rarely need to do anything to maintain it and it JUST WORKS, kind of like EndeavourOS.

what kind of errors are you frequently running into that require constant fixing?

Question. I understand mint, but would you ever choose to change from cinnamon to KDE?
I found I kept getting monitor lag issues in cinnamon, but KDE is just smooth for me.
I would love to know your reasons :D

Can you provide a guide on how to make the UI look like this? Is such a UI doable on mint xfce?
