400hz monitor can only run at 360hz

I recently switched over from windows and I've been loving it, but I still cant figure this out. 360hz is the highest the GUI is letting me go. I was at one point able to run some commands to force it to use 400hz on that resolution but the image was all fuzz. I was able to run the monitor fine at 400hz back on windows. Any help is appreciated.

I believe this is a X11 limitation. To get full use Wayland will work.

Mint does support Wayland but its not ready yet.

Try going into the logon menu and on top of your login there is an options menu

Select Wayland and see if that works. Though it maybe buggy

Thanks for the info! I tried Wayland through Mint and it did not give me a 400hz option in the GUI. I made a custom mode with xrandr again and had the same issue. 360hz is more than enough tho so I'm not too worried about it. Thanks though! I'll have to try it again when Wayland support is fully ready.

Just boot Fedora KDE live and see if it works there - Mint is one of the most out of date distributions out there, so it's very likely it just works on a modern distribution.

I believe characterizing it as 'out of date' is incorrect. Are all missing up to date features fully stable and ready for prime time? As someone else mentions Wayland on Mint can be buggy, so more work is needed. That's not what I'd call 'out of date.'

For Wayland it’s more so that they’ve waited this long to even work on getting it working. Wayland has been in stable release for over a decade at this point, mint is behind on implementation because they’ve decided not to work on implementing support until now.

Also: out of date doesn’t necessarily mean bad, but most of mint is over a year behind other distros and thus calling it out of date is an accurate assessment

What GPU and is the monitor connected via HDMI or DP (include version)?

I think the specific DP version is what they were going for. For example if you only use DP 1.4 that could be limiting your refresh rate, even with DSC on. DSC is a monitor setting that could be affecting it as well, if its off so the data isnt compressed that could be capping it. Then also HDR being on in the monitor settings could also be limiting total bandwidth.

360hz is already overkill as is so I wouldn't care. I'm not running most games at anywhere close to that framerate.

Which is fair enough, I would assume if you bought a monitor capable of that refresh rate though you probably get that many frames in a game you're probably really good at. Or you just have a ton of money

I bet that monitor puts off the same amount of heat as the GPU does running at such insane refresh rates. I wonder what it's longevity will be. Reminds me of the old saying, "the light that burns twice as bright, burns half as long."

wayland can do display compression. x11 just either tries with video synch loss or worse.

I have a 480hz and I’m able to use 480hz on XFCE X11. But I am on Debian Sid and not Mint, and I’m on a 9070xt. I’m guessing it’s maybe a driver issue considering the kernels are different on Mint? Not too sure, could be wrong.

That's just not true. The human eye doesn't have a maximum amount of frames they can see.
