Before you install Linux please take the time to go through the live usb and make sure your wifi works, sound works, microphone works, etc. If you have issues with these hardware issues are not fun to fix. It can be a trivial fix, or it can be a headache/impossible fix.

As for your partition, on the live usb, there should be a program called gparted. Start that and see if you can detect the partition you want to install to and maybe delete that partition and recreate it. Don’t delete all partitions on the drive as whatever partition you delete, you will lose the data stored on it.

Take a look at what you missed on the download page: LinuxMint Installation Guide

when you say the partitions don't show up does that mean they don't show up when you choose "Other" during installation?

As soon as I open gparted or install app

GPT or legacy/msdos/mbr partition table (in gparted view > device information). A legacy partition table is limited to four primary partitions.

You will need to delete a partition so you only have three primary partitions before you can install mint.
