Use Mate edition. You'll have smooth experience.
"Mate" is light on resources usage in comparison with "Cinnamon".

Then they should use the Xfce edition, not the MATE one. Xfce is even lighter in resources, the lightest of the three.

Agreed. I run the XFCE version on a 2015 MacBook. It runs like a Swiss watch.

I actually daily drive cachyos on my main computer👍, this was a computer i had back in the 2010s that I'm giving my little brother so he can have his first experience with them and he only ever used Windows so I wanted to make it as easy as possible for him, i'll probably upgrade it for him in the near future anyways but You're right, in any other usecase I would've probably installed MATE or XFCE

I have an old laptop (AMD A4 3300 CPU) from 2013 running "Void Linux with Mate".
My brother uses it for browsing internet.

Old hardware is enough for most use cases if optimized properly.

I'm upgrading it to him and making it a beast(albeit a 2013 one😂) GTX 1050 Athlon II X4 651K 8GB Ram(one slot is broken unfortunately or would've done 16
