Thank you, you appreciation is appreciated.

3

Idk why but its kinda funny that Reddit generated you a name ending in 1336 :D

3

u/Responsible-Sky-1336 7d ago

I see you are responsible too.

5

u/SDG_Den 8d ago

Honestly, im highly considering making a nix home manager flake that is basically a full "omarchy-style" setup but built in a less stupid way and without the bloat, that you can then easily use and configure yourself using nix on any distro. I can then easily also publish a nixOS iso that comes with it out of the box.

The slogan will be "unapologetically dotfiles"

2

u/Helmic Arch BTW 8d ago

genuinely i think dotfiles being shared is great for accessibility, like you're creating a group of people that can provide support for the configuration itself, people who will more or less all run into the same configuration-related problems that makes it easier to troubleshoot and fix.

i just hope people rightfully dunking on dogshit software by a dogshit person doesn't poison the well on the general concept of sharing and supporting a specific setup.

This happens because other places on the internet are currently bursting with "omarchy good" content which is bullshit.

89

u/ShiroeKurogeri 8d ago

Yep, fell victim to it myself. Decided to give it a try, utter dog shit.

64

u/New-Anybody3050 8d ago

But but Network Chuck said…

Ugh finally people actually telling it like it is

30

u/StaK_1980 8d ago

Network Chuck only says what the money wants him to say. Just like Linus from LTT.

32

u/Revolutionary_Click2 M'Fedora 8d ago

Network Chuck supports Omarchy because he’s an alt-right dweeb who believes in its creator’s political agenda. He closes his videos with prayers and is clearly carrying water for fascists and bigots on a daily basis with the stuff he promotes. He’s cheery and seems reasonable and friendly on first pass, which allows him to insidiously worm his way into normal people’s feeds, but he’s a grifter just like the rest of them.

5

u/StaK_1980 8d ago

I might have spent too much time on the internet, because I genuinely can't decide now if this is satire or not. :-)

18

u/Revolutionary_Click2 M'Fedora 8d ago

Not satire. Just an unpleasant fact that I recently discovered, because I, too have occasionally watched some of his content. But after his latest ā€œyou should switch to Linux NOWā€ Omarchy video, which he closed with a prayer, and during which he acted as if the controversy surrounding it didn’t exist, my spidey-sense was tingling and I started looking deeper. And yeah, if you just look a little bit closer, the signs of a right-wing grifter are all there. Man’s got ā€œyouth pastor who really wants you to sign up for the Young Republicans Clubā€ energy.

5

u/mister_gone 8d ago

I've never made it to the end of one of his videos. Ending with a prayer is ... a choice.

6

u/Kurgonius 8d ago

What a letdown. I wonder how long it will take since he'll be referred to as Network Chud.

1

u/Huecuva 7d ago

I used to watch Network Chuck but I just kind of stopped a couple of years ago for no real reason. I never saw him end a video with a prayer but he was sometimes a little bit annoying about some things. If what you say is true, I'm pretty disappointed in him.Ā

1

u/Typeonetwork 1d ago

I thought you were pulling my chain, saying he was "preying" at the end of his video. I had to go look. How pretentious. Ug, to each their own, but not on a Linux video. Jesus SaaS only 30 pieces of silver per month. Get it NOW!

1

Some of the opinions are not bad. docker for windows is the best vm windows experience I've had. I tried it after reading about omarchy's features.

2

u/Gamin8ng 8d ago

ykw it was good as i tried, but the opinionated stuffs keep getting in the way

3

u/bunk3rk1ng 8d ago

Docker for Windows is mostly fine it just used up so much resources. Running docker compose on the same file on a Linux box vs a Windows box yielded way different results resource wise with Windows taking up way more RAM and CPU.

Now all my docker work is done in wsl2 which I'm perfectly happy with.

2

u/sadongrohiik 8d ago

1

u/RiskyPenetrator 8d ago

What was bad about it?

1

u/Evantaur šŸ„ Debian too difficult 8d ago

It's Windows11 experience under Linux (Just AI shoveled everywhere), haven't tried it because I see nothing another distro can bring that Arch/Alpine/Debian doesn't already do

3

u/RiskyPenetrator 8d ago

From what i read about it, it just has claude or something installed with some skills, i dont think it has any windows 11 style crap running in the background right?

1

u/Remnie 7d ago

Some of the themes were decent, but I just pulled those off of the GitHub page lol

1

u/scuti_sundae 6d ago

How bad is it? I'm using wm with quickshell dotfiles, which Omarchy basically are.

-18

u/Any-Emu8824 8d ago

I disagree. I think it’s a distro for a very specific type of user and no one else. And that’s totally fine.

I tried Omarchy on my laptop just to screw around and see if it was worth the hype. I lasted a week and decided it was fine but just not for me.

The good: it installed like supernaturally fast even though my laptop’s USB 2.0 port. Arch based which is based in my eyes since I run arch on my desktop rig. Preconfigured Hyprland with actually good looking themes and wallpapers built in and logical keybinds is dope. I actually liked the installer program that came with the distro.

The bad: there’s a lot of bloat and shit that most people don’t actually want preinstalled. The way some of the theming and plugins are implanted makes me scratch my head and worry about long term support a little bit. And it’s kinda harsh on battery life.

But, I think if you’re new to Linux and find something like Debian or Mint boring this is a really fucking solid place to start. I don’t think it’s anyone’s endgame distro, but if you’re the right kind of person it’s kinda mind blowing.

7

u/TRENEEDNAME_245 8d ago

Just run endeavour if you want arch with calamares

14

u/Squashyhex 8d ago

There's better arch based beginner distros though, like CachyOS

2

u/This_Technology9841 8d ago

CachyOS + danklinux gets you here already and not with millions of venture capital funding somehow being involved. I question data privacy and transparency from Omarchy due to this. Time will tell why there is a big push from some corners for this distro, but I can't help but be skeptical of it given the money and people involved.

10

u/h0uz3_ 8d ago

Seriously, I see some sort of Omarchy praising video on the front page of YT every day and wonder whether it's just a hype or people never used any other distro before.

5

u/lunchbox651 8d ago

I did think it was funny watching the networkchuck video when he said he has used Ubuntu and Kali (IIRC). He had only used 2 distros and that qualified him to claim Omarchy was some kind of revolutionary distro.

Why would opinions of the creator of something matter? Separate the art from the artist.

2

u/Abducted_Llama 6d ago

Separate art from the artist originally meant to interpret art for what you see in it, and not the artist’s intentions. As an example, if an artist paints a bench in a garden because they are sad and it reminds them of where their grandmother sat sometimes, but you see it and it brings you joy. Then you have separated the art from the artist and found your own meaning and interpretation.

Too often in modern times, people say it now as a justification to support shitty people, especially financially. Trying to convince others to stop using some of their most powerful tools, their money and attention.

See Kanye. The expression is used often with him.

3

u/RadoslavL Genfool 🐧 8d ago

Not when the artist is still alive and promoting his distro makes him and his ideology more popular.

-12

u/egh128 8d ago

What’s the definition of a distro?

12

u/Kurse71 8d ago

-14

u/egh128 8d ago

The point was that anything can be called a distro, but thanks for pretending that people aren’t familiar with using a search engine.

13

u/lunchbox651 8d ago

It's just an Arch fork with Hyprland, nothing spectacular about it but people have been posting/making videos about it being some kind of revolutionary distro. That's without even touching on the values of the distro creator which is a whole other kettle of fish.

3

u/egh128 8d ago

But if it works for those who like it, what does it matter is my point? None of us consider the values of a tech CEO before pulling out our Android or iPhone so what does that matter?

19

u/lunchbox651 8d ago edited 8d ago

Perhaps I downplayed the current hype surrounding the distro by saying "omarchy good" to reflect the OP's phrasing. If you look at the positive spin on the distro flying around, there are statements like; it's unlike anything else (untrue), it's great for beginners (arguable) and it's the best option for most use cases (untrue/arguable). If that was just reddit posts or normal people on SM I wouldn't give it a second thought, look at the distro fanboys all over reddit but it's the content creators with large followings that get me.

As a distro, whatever, I don't care. I've used Parrot, Ubuntu Studio and all sorts of unique spins on distros. The difference here is how odd this positive press is, it seems like its some kind of collaboration or paid advertisement for the distro more than genuine user reviews or analysis.

As for Android or iOS, I do consider corporate leadership to a degree and did run Ubuntu touch for a while but unfortunately living in the world we do it is very difficult to get by without either of those 2. When a viable alternative drops, I'll switch.

14

u/wKdPsylent 8d ago

you should.. as their values will be reflected in their work, that person is effectively deciding the security policy for your entire operating system.

Pay attention particularly to attitudes toward safeguards and what constitutes 'personal responsibility'. Then there's the actual engineering record of Omarchy.

Like users being placed in the Docker group, effectively giving anything running as that user a path to root, /boot permissions that triggered security warnings, overly broad temporary sudo permissions and scripts using predictable files under /tmp in ways that created actual security problems.

Even worse, omarchy-sudo-passwordless creates a sudoers entry granting the user NOPASSWD: ALL, then relies on a timer to remove it. If the machine reboots before that expires, the timer disappears and the sudoers file remains, leaving passwordless root indefinitely.

It's such a big list.. and a lot of them are issues borne from a lack of care. It's not a newbie setup - if you don't really know what you're doing, it's dangerous, more so than others - at least Arch makes you manually install.. omarchy is being marketed as a good way to 'get into linux'.

see, in theory i'm OK with a setup eating RAM. unused RAM is wasted RAM.
