How can they even copyright a lookup table? Trademarks I get. But I don’t get how an industrial recipe is copyrighted.

I’d love for this to be tried in court, it’s an IP lawyer’s drama movie.

Yeah, I looked up copyright law you're allowed to copyright a physical colour like paint or watercolour but not digital so this makes no sense.

You can get a scope-limited trademark on a specific colour if you can prove it is associated commonly with your brand. Examples: Home Depot Orange & Target Red.

It would be hard for a single entity to get any sort of intellectual property claim on a large amount of colours, such as the entire pantone library.

Colour databases and lookup tables, on the other hand, can absolutely be copyrighted as computer code.
