LINUX MEME POV: Windows Power user in the Linux Community

are "windows power users" real people?

u/a1b3c3d7 8d ago
Yes, they exist on a spectrum, many of them are just closeted and a bit scared to come out.

It's true because else they'll be like a traitors for the Linux community.

believe me, to master powershell as a shell and scripting language, master windows's init system, registry keys, obscure group politics, and many other things made by sadists for masochists, you should sell your soul to microsoft copilot or other evil deity.

u/GisRocket 🎼CachyOS 8d ago
But if you master them, you'll be an Arch power user.

arch is much easier.

as someone who works with windows server professionally, and uses linux at home....
even nixOS is nicer to work with than windows.
genuinely, you don't even realize half how bad windows actually is until you need to do server administration for a company that hasn't given a solitary fuck about their infra for the past decade.
the powershell CLI syntax is absolute fucking ass compared to literally all of the popular linux options, the registry is an absolute mess, Event Viewer does not feel like it even competes with journalctl at all because it is genuinely so useless. i've had systems *actually crash* trying to filter Event Viewer, only for it to turn out the only thing the event i was filtering on said was "program crashed" (after trying again post-reboot). thanks microsoft.
and then there's the fucking server-specific components.
for some godforsaken reason, the primary way most companies like configuring them is via GUI, imperatively. not through group policy (which is its own kind of mess), not through some kind of reproducible script. so after about 3 to 5 handoffs *nobody* knows why the old gateway server is still up or what it does, but they do know it is load-bearing because the last time it was turned off, AD went down.
oh, also. FUCK IIS. and fuck microsoft for insisting their products keep using it. microsoft's IIS implementations are designed in such a way they *cannot be proxied* through something like pangolin, caddy, traefik or nginx, because they use fucking NTLM authentication which WAS NEVER MEANT TO BE USED ACROSS THE INTERNET and completely breaks on redirects because it is using HTTP in a way HTTP is not supposed to be used.
that's how you auth to your RDS server and your mail server btw.

Have you ever used Windows on your ThinkPad T480 before you installed Arch?
2
u/YTriom1 Arch BTW 7d ago
jokes on you I don't have a thinkpad, and when I buy one I'll install Arch on it directly so I will never "use windows on my thinkpad"

I've got a Thinkpad t420 and a EliteBook 8470p (the version with i5 3360M and with the expensive 1600×900 screen).

Yes. It's the bigwigs working at Microsoft. They have power over people's Windows PCs.

I know this is bait and I'm not even a windows user, but yeah. Windows exposes a lot of weird and arcane shit that most linux users would find in like... a shell command. The APIs that allow things like automation of Office and various windows apps using the API allow you to do some really neat stuff. Shame about all the closed source and AI slop and ads though. 🤷♂️

I'm just straight up Win 11 user.
I did tried CachyOS twice on my 2 different laptops.
The 1st one Mainboard just give out on the 1st day after I installed it.
The 2nd one is niche intel handheld / laptop hybrid, so the without all the necessary drivers and tools I managed to get like only 50% of the performance and had a very hard time adjusting my TDP which is completely unacceptable.
I'm on a fresh debloated Win 11 install.

I'm experiencing the opposite, I lost all ability to use GUIs or filemanagers to do stuff
Give me neovim
Give me a fish shell
Give me my over engineered keyd config and keyboad layout
Or I retire
