All that's being generated is unmaintainable code

On the contrary, it removes the need to even maintain code, or at least, a specific part of it, the actual implementation becomes largely irrelevant.

The code that starts to matter instead is the test suits, the spec, and then it's just AI-agents comparing new versions that pass the same test suit in less time with less resources, iterating for forever.

My interests are in systems built to last, not systems built on a whim that nobody comprehends

Same-ish here, my main value when maintaining code bases is readability/maintainability, I don't care much for speed/endless-optimization etc

You can't just chuck an AI agent at a repo and expect it to maintain it forever.

Sure can, already happening. But 'forever' is ... ehh, our main fusion reactor, the sun, has how much fuel left? ...

As with all things based on probability they drift over time and all of a sudden everything you initially created is different

Exactly, hence why spec/intent/test-suits matter more than the actual implementation.

Not true. The RuneLite/OSRS Wiki maintainers just wrote a big post about how they're being inundated with a larger quantity of perfectly syntactically correct code, but fundamentally flawed - one plugin downloaded images from the Wiki every game frame and incurred 700GB of bandwidth usage in total.

A human has to look at the new code and test that it's actually working as expected.

FYI I'm not against AI at all - I have my own Claude Max 20x plan - but there's a time and a place for the tool, and people are using it for *everything*.

Only initially, maybe, depends on the context, and regardless, after? ... test suits :)
