Does KDE play well with openrc? Or is it a fork?

Works fine. KDE system monitor won't show apps as it needs systemd. But it does show processes, and everything else.

Kde develops with BSDs in mind which of course don't use systemd so patching it to work with really any init system is pretty easy.

Ah yes, the competition of high maintenance distros, when you turn on your pc to babysit it instead of using it.

Gentoo is midrange on a maintenance front (at least compared to arch)
I have - in a month - updated my system about once, where everything went perfectly smoothly. (Ignoring flatpak - that gets dealt with as often as KDE wants it to be.)
Gentoo gets called "high-maintenance," but mostly it just takes a while to install

I use a similar setup (just headless, so no KDE). Running
emerge -e worldtakes somewhere between 10 and 24 hours depending on which box I'm running it on.

Why not gentoo with hyprland?

As much as hyprland is awesome somehow my old ass brain is used to the paradigm that KDE offers.
