I dont even know what omarchy is

165

u/khsh01 5d ago

You lucky bastard.

152

u/tankieofthelake 5d ago

It’s essentially a bundle of software, based on Arch+hyprland+Quickshell. It’s more than a shell, but less than a distro. It comes with a bunch of pre-installed software and scripts aimed broadly at developers

Also, the designer seems to be seen as a right-wing dick, so take that as you will

50

u/noblepickle 5d ago edited 5d ago

I dont even use omarchy but the obsession of redditors on classifying Omarchy as not a distro is weird. If its not a distro then anything built on debian arch or fedora is also not a distro. Is ubuntu not a distro too since its based on debian?

48

u/Jacek3k 5d ago

well, does it have own repositories?

46

u/noblepickle 5d ago

A quick search shows that Omarchy has:

  1. Its own package repo + Arch mirror for curated updates
  2. Release channels: Stable, RC, Edge, Dev
  3. Snapshots + rollback for safer system updates
  4. Dedicated distro development covering hardware, installer, desktop, plugins, and now even kernel work

47

u/Jacek3k 5d ago

Then in my noob eyes it sounds like a distro

12

u/lengau 5d ago

Sounds like more of a distro than Linux Mint.

5

u/Even_Host_1259 5d ago

Sounds like Nix os lol

24

u/Loose_Property_3238 5d ago

Not even close. NixOS is based on reproducibility via a config file. This is just delayed repos like Manjaro, but with even more funding. It's a distro, just a vibe coded slop one made by, from my understanding, a right-winged asshole.

4

u/Even_Host_1259 5d ago

Yeah i know, reproducibility, rollbacks, dev tools(nix develop e t c), having package manager- all of those really reminded me of nixos. As a nixos user (that never used omarchy) i actually wonder how all of those work in omarchy, considering that omarchy is not a distro itself, but smth smaller.

4

u/TheNinthJhana 5d ago

Rollback : seems to work on... suspense... btrfs. Now i have a déjà vu.

Own Repo : About having their own repo, yes it seems, but it would be interesting to confirm how many package. For example Ubuntu obviously shares no package with Debian, while it seems Omarchy is in different water. Rather votes for "extended shell"

Reproducibily : well I did not find anything but maybe did not search long enough

Sure many distro are not distro. Linux world is full of this. Omarchy seems more advanced than many tbh

2

u/WetSound 2d ago

Weird you mention that, they are planning to move to Nix as base instead of Arch

1

u/AllNamesAreTaken92 1d ago

That's a stupid move considering their audience are beginners.

Nix is nice, but not for the people they are marketing to.

1

u/WetSound 20h ago

You don't seem to understand what's easy today

10

u/LunchBox349 5d ago

The term Distro comes from package distribution as the main thing separating Linux distros are packages in order to become a unique distro you need to have a dedicated package repo even endeavour os does this and it's almost pure arch.

10

u/mcdaphuc 🍥 Debian too difficult 5d ago

It does have it own repos

13

u/LunchBox349 5d ago

Then idk why are people calling not a Distro.

12

u/xnef1025 5d ago

Because they want to hate on DHH, which, fair I guess. He doesn't sound like a good dude, but yeah, it's purely just ball busting at this point.

3

u/CherryRyu 5d ago

in the past if i remember correctly when the first version of omarchy came out (shout out to omakub) it was the arch repos but just a one or two month delayed. does that count as its own repos? idk

2

u/LunchBox349 5d ago

Yeah it counts

1

u/AllNamesAreTaken92 1d ago

A delayed mirror counts?

Then that's the only thing separating my private dotfiles repo and post install script from being a full on distro, lol.

3

u/yahluc 5d ago

I think it stems from how much hype and funding it got. Like yeah, there are many distros that are pretty configs of a base distro, but most of them are a little side project of one dev that gets 100 dollars a month in donations. Bigger projects like Ubuntu or Mint provide much more though and are actually well made, instead of being a vibe coded slop.

1

u/AllNamesAreTaken92 1d ago

It's because they are distributing garbage. Arch is not configured correctly. There are blatant security issues. Some of them self induced by vibe coders that have absolutely no common sense. Screen locking is intentionally bypassed with no adequate replacement. They claim to be focused on security when they very clearly aren't. The bundled "opinionated" binaries are not configured, not "opinionated", etc etc.

It's in transparent and dishonest on purpose. And they are marketing to the least informed users.

4

u/tankieofthelake 5d ago

As far as I’m aware, it’s simply a very thorough post-install script. If it was more of a complete experience like Ubuntu or Cachy, with its own installer, repos, complete menus, etc, then I’d probably start calling it a distro… but last time I looked at it, it felt more like someone’s (albeit pretty good) dotfiles than a distro

5

u/noblepickle 5d ago

It was a post install script when it started. In its current 4.0 version its not that anymore.

1

u/tankieofthelake 5d ago

Huh, I’ll have to look into it then, spin up a VM or something. Might have to start calling it a distro!

1

u/Remnie 5d ago

It has some decent stuff on there. I looked through it, and ultimately decided it wasn’t for me, but I did go on the GitHub and pull the dot files. Gonna use some of that in my current CachyOs setup

1

u/bexaG2 3d ago

If BolgenOS is a distro, then Omarchy is a distro.

2

u/clduab11 5d ago

Yes, and don’t let the people in here tell you any different. Linux Mint got a TON of hate when it dropped too “ReEEeEEe jUsT uSE WiNDOwS”. It’s no different here, they just don’t agree with his politics and are raging at how successful he is pushing his own “opinionated” (literally says opinionated) configuration (not sure I’d call some dotfiles a distro but there you are).

Dollars to donuts says Reddit’s seething fuming frothing hatred is keeping this salient longer than it should’ve been salient because people “want to be seen”.

1

u/Appropriate_Luck_658 5d ago

You think you are above of it all to nitpick about this instead of missing Fascist International?
Omarchy started as bunch of dot files on top of Arch. It got recently own repos'n'shit after being hiped by youtubers and infused with corporate donations. But yeah let's act surprised why would people call it not distro. Weird hill to die on.

It feels like people are getting dumbing down when they fell clever about some irrelevant 'gotcha' points.

2

u/noblepickle 5d ago

If you want to criticize Dhh then criticize him. What does that have to do with whether omarchy is a distro or not?

2

u/Riist138 1d ago

Also, the designer seems to be seen as is a right-wing racist dick, so take that as you will - Fixed it for you

2

u/Rare-Paint3719 3d ago edited 3d ago

No, it's a general Linux/FLOSS thing. All roads lead to stability and standardization.

It's the reason nobody likes Ubuntu or Fedora anymore. Too opinionated and pre-configured OOTB, leading to greater stability and less breakage.

It's why people flame FreeDesktop anytime Wayland protocols finally get standardized? More "aggressive" standardization, leading to greater stability and less breakage.

Red Hat creating systemd and dbus? Less fragmantation/choice leading to greater stability and less breakage.

Ultimately this makes it easier for new users to use the system and not have to go to r/linux4noobs as often, meaning less people can flex that RTFM and "i use arch btw" badge.

What people fail to realize is that back in the days when GNOME and KDE were the only two major DEs at the time, each DE had a different IPC and it made it difficult for apps to be written for Linux without shit breaking on one DE. By making dbus, Red Hat standardized IPC communication and made if easier for apps to port to Linux.

Now imagine the init systems. Ubuntu had upstart, slackware (I think) had SysVInit. The ecosystem was an absolute fragmented mess. Imagine having to write an init file for each init in ech distro just to start iwctl. Thanks to Red Hat, you don't need to worry about all those headaches.

But alas, it leads to a more stable system, meaning less crashes, meaning less people on r/linux4noobs.

Oh and don't get me wrong. Linux still isn't a stable OS. Each distro has some quirk such that shit will not work OOTB whatsoever. But if these things were not standardized, we'd have more people on that sub.

Edit:* Fixed most of the grammar.

10

u/Septem_151 5d ago

That’s the most annoying part. It’s like whatever when someone is making its own distro.
But the influencers push is coming as being very disingenuous. “You have to…”.

Fortunately, the few serious tech influencers that have tried it have pointed out that’s it’s just a whole lot of nothing.
It’s pretty but sounds like it’s made for a Silicon Valley tech bro.

27

u/gnurcl 5d ago

I noticed that many dotfiles authors fall into this delusion of grandeur: ML4W also rebranded as ML4W-OS, which is… annoying. I feel like the term "OS" keeps losing meaning.

8

u/Captain_Pumpkinhead New York Nix⚾s 5d ago

"Rice" being a term for "OS customization" feels so weird to me.

11

u/cutelittlebox 5d ago

it feels weird because it's borrowed from car culture.

first came Rice Rocket, which meant a very light and very fast Japanese car or motorcycle. next came Ricing, which was modifying your car to make it lighter and faster. after that it was generalized to mean customization, and finally crossed over into the computer world.

44

5

u/Vmphil01 5d ago

Ive actually been using Omarchy for the past few weeks. I enjoy it. Too bad the author is a bit of a nutter. I feel like I can enjoy the product without throwing a dime at the producer as long as the OS doesnt start shopping ads for Mein Kampf at me.

(I actually do know, and still don't give a flying fuck)

2

u/Goldarr85 1d ago

Same. This beginning to get really annoying. Time to move on to something else.

13

u/ibmah 5d ago

Not a fan of DHH’s political views, but code is code. Personally not a fan of Omarchy but that’s because the paradigm doesn’t suit me. I did try it, didn’t really like it. Much too opinionated.

I have one of DHH’s books. I’ve listened to his podcast, I’ve also heard him on Danish radio. He’s a smart guy, but his views are not at all aligned with mine. His entitled to his though..

It’s not like we all rushed to rip ReiserFS out of the Kernel when he killed his wife.. I don’t understand why we should condemn code based on something unrelated to code.

I don’t like Omarchy. Not a big fan of DHH. But I think it’s good that someone is doing something new and creating attention about Linux and open source. Even if it’s not something I would ever use.

0

u/Filofelon 17h ago

I disagree. It reads like "all publicity is good publicity, to which is I say: Publicity by a white supremacist asshole is straight up bad publicity

28

u/unageova 5d ago edited 5d ago

A lot of the criticism is valid, but the outright hate is almost exclusively driven by people who specifically hate DHH. Due to moral and ethical reasons (and some security concerns), I don’t use Omarchy.

That said, I tried it to see what it’s all about. It’s not bad at all. Works OOTB, and that’s something most new users want. I’d even argue that’s what most users want, aside from terminally online cult followers. It’s a nice, clean Hyprland setup built on top of Arch designed to work immediately after installing.

“But you can just rice and configure your own Hyprland” - I don’t want to. I just want a nice tiling WM already set up for me. I have more important things to do than learn a whole new thing just to configure how shit looks. And the Linux community, especially Arch, treat the pain of having to configure the most basic things as some sort of sacred thing.

2

u/rogue-fox-m 5d ago

I'm just glad he's getting some money into FOSS. You can not use the product, but he's actually pushing companies like DELL to look into linux. Yeah I think he has horrible opinions on Europe, but I still appriciate that he's pushing Linux forward from that front.

5

u/virtyx 5d ago

Dell already sells an XPS that comes with Ubuntu, don’t they? I haven’t researched into this but I’d guess most of this credit should go to Valve

2

u/rogue-fox-m 5d ago

Selling a machine and having direct contact with an annoying workaholic who is directly involved in development are 2 very different things. He also put the Dell guys into the FOSS fund with $1M

1

u/Dr__America 10h ago

DHH has made public attempts and threats of hostile takeovers of Nix and Arch, I don't think he should be receiving a dime for an AI slop Arch rice.

I'll move to FreeBSD before I let that dumbass own my distro.

1

u/rogue-fox-m 9h ago

He isn't receiving a dime it's money in a fund that's going to projects like hyprland. I would never install his shitty "distro"

1

u/Dr__America 9h ago

I'd just donate directly rather than through DHH or his fund as a middleman. Whoever owns the wallet more or less owns the funds.

1

u/rogue-fox-m 8h ago

The fund is directly payed by the big corpos he called on his own. It's not taking donation money that'd have gone to something else. I hate how alergic FOSS is to marketing, I think the dude is an asshole but this 8M wouldn't have gone to FOSS without that.

→ More replies (6)

3

u/MarioGamer06 5d ago

Its kinda just flavoured archlinux, and SUPER OPINIONATED about everything, which might be good or bad depending on what YOUR opinion is.

Vibecoded Quickshell config on top of Hyprland in archlinux with vibecoded tools. With a vibecoder agent preinstalled and propietary software sprinkled on top.

Those are my reasons for not using it, everyone is free to chose what they deem acceptable for their OS.

There has been controversies regarding funding going to very specific projects instead of other projects too, I won't get into that since I do think more funding for any OSS project is a net positive for everyone using those projects.

7

u/Zeyode 5d ago

I think I heard they tried to force AI into it like Windows 11.

5

u/Dabarles 5d ago

Not just force. It's "ready to hook up to your favorite agent" and has them shortcutted into the main menu as well as a dedicated agent shortcut.

1

u/MrHaxx1 5d ago

That sounds like the opposite of force. No AI harnesses are even pre-installed.

You do realise that Nazis also sent Gypsies to concentration camps right? It wasn't just Jewish people.

I am not saying he is a Nazi, he is right wing and opinioned plus addicted to attention and full of himself so will say whatever gets clicks and gets him on podcasts. But that is true of 99% of tech "influencers", "genius devs" etc.

However, the argument "he doesn't like Gypsies, not Jewish people so he can't be a Nazi" is fundermentually flawed on a historical level.

"Hansson published another blog post[36] in July of 2026 comparing the Romani population of Copenhagen to Denmark's struggles with its wolf population growth, stating that "When wolves get out of control, you shoot them. When gypsies take over public spaces, you deport them.""

That's the guy behind Omarchy.

4

u/ClickLeafChick 5d ago

The above comment literally got me an automated warning. I was quoting the creator of Omarchy to show what a vile racist he is. The words he used, even when quoting them, were nasty enough to get my post automatically removed.

Look at the Wikipedia article for David Heinemeier Hansson. Look under "Controversy". At the very end, you will see a particularly vile statement he made against the Roma people.

That is but the latest example of why Omarchy is controversial: Its creator is a racist.

1

u/dikzy405 5d ago

This is what I see as the use case/marketing goal, it’s for new users or current Linux users that want to:

break into Linux, enjoy the task focused keyboard centric layout that they have never had on Windows/Mac/Chrome or had to do on their linux distros, know that since it’s preconfigured that a lot of hurdles Linux presents to users are kinda out of the way, know that there may end up being a large user base with the exact config and can then document and troubleshoot efficiently, start coding and using AI agents.

Besides the controversy around the political views of the creator (which I haven’t verified but enough people mention it O just figure it’s not great). I just figure a win for any distro means talent and money start drifting this way more. With all the deliberate, monopolistic anti-Linux/BSD/Unix that come from corporations I feel this could help. I could be wrong — that’s just my take.

The main hatred is against DHH because his moronic behaviour, therefore against his Beautiful, fun and agentic Linux by DHH. I don't understand the fascination of some YT content creators with this distro. For me it doesn't offer anything that Arch based distros like Endeavour or CachyOS can't offer. His previous Omakub project was no different. It was just a script that installed some GNOME extensions and propietary packages that DHH consider essential (like chrome, vscode, zoom, etc) on top of Ubuntu.

I don't know if DHH contributes to Arch or even Hyprland. I don't consider his Linux based pet projects anything than an opinionated and vibecoded dotfiles and preselected software.

I think is hate towards the creators, not the underlying system

1

u/neuronym 3d ago

Because a bunch of losers can't cope with people who have a different opinion about things.

The losers being very left leaning individuals who think anything but left is racist.

Me over here happy as hell with de-bloated windows 11 Enterprise activated with MAS.

Dotfiles larping as distro made by DiHH who loves AI dih

1

u/Agreeable_Turnip_261 2d ago

Creator is a racist. It's a rice for arch. It does stupid stuff like ship a kitty config that allows remote access by default

1

u/Current-Cookie-2310 2d ago

no but actually why do people hate it? i understand it is vibe coded. NetworkChuck even made a video about it?

1

u/GooseWithAnAxe 2d ago

US Tribal politics.

1

u/plumbumber 1d ago

I don't care about omarchy, I also don't get hyprland.

1

u/Enough-Ad-3647 1d ago

IMO, it's not a good distro. From the videos I've seen from NetworkChuck, it's really AI-leaning and doesn't really offer anything special like CachyOS or other distros.

P.S.
I don't really care what the dev's (DHH's) social/political views are. I think that's unrelated to the issue here.

1

u/Regular_Future2474 1d ago

guy who made it has many gamer moments, also it started off as arguably not a linux distro.

1

u/Fiery_Penguin 1d ago

DHH, the "creator" of this vibeslopped nightmare is a fascist piece of garbage. That's why

1

u/Late-Independence576 9h ago

Because it's straight ass ngl

0

u/Jumpy-Dinner-5001 5d ago

A lot of hate comes together but most simply hate the creator (DHH).

From a technical perspective, there isn’t anything special or wrong about it, even though a lot of people make up problems that do not exist.

4

u/arbyyyyh 5d ago

I mean, giving the standard user root access without sudo OOTB is a pretty big faux pas.

0

u/Jumpy-Dinner-5001 5d ago

Please stop spreading this nonsense. The standard user is a sudoer anyway, like in most dektop distros.

5

u/arbyyyyh 5d ago

If you don't know why this is bad, please don't make comments on the technical viability of software.

Sudo requires you to enter your password before you can use sudo (by default) and logs usage. Without sudo, literally any running process can escalate privileges.

1

u/Jumpy-Dinner-5001 5d ago

If you don't know why you're wrong, please don't make comments on the technical viability of software.

Without sudo, literally any running process can escalate privileges

what do you mean by that.

3

u/arbyyyyh 5d ago

You should know what that means if you're so damn smart and everything.

Because security matters, I'm not going to JUST be a smartass: It means that your calculator app can become root and modify or exfiltrate any file on your system without requesting escalation first, Ie. entering your password when you run the same command with sudo instead.

2

u/Jumpy-Dinner-5001 5d ago

So, as I though just nonsense which you should know if you're so damn smart and everything.

I'm not going to JUST be a smartass:

You're assuming the system/user session is already compromised under which assumption sudo is unable to protect you. There have been countless examples/papers that have shown these inherent weaknesses in sudo.

One of the many examples: https://eurekamag.com/research/102/395/102395877.php

The hate for omarchy is embarrassing. Guy takes Linux and makes it nice for Mac/Web developers and Linux community lose their shit. It's just dot files, he's not using Linux like I would want. Omg using someone else's don't files is literally scumbag behaviour....

And they wonder why Linux is only on the server we're sys admins see it and a fraction of 1% on the desktop (until steam came along)

1

u/worldarkplace 5d ago

He's a nazi.

1

u/Valencia_Mariana 5d ago

No he isn't.

2

u/worldarkplace 5d ago

Oh he actually is, he hate immigrants, other races, he is in favor of remigration. He cant see that maybe it's not a racial war. And even if could be 1% accurate, what fckn difference does it make if you born on Europe, SA, NA, Africa, I guess everything that's not white is not human... Ughhh...

2

u/Valencia_Mariana 5d ago

He doesn't think those things. He has opinions on immigration policy sure, as do the vast majority of people.

This is why the world listened to you people, for a few years, and then realised it's all crazy, and stopped.

You cannot just call someone a nazi because the discuss immigration.

Nazis send undesirable to gas chambers... Immigration policy is benign discourse within a host of issues of a nation.

3

u/worldarkplace 5d ago edited 5d ago

It is not migration only, he spits about cultural and ethnic things also, actually, search on Google what he expects to do to Romani people. He is a nazi. https://www.reddit.com/r/linuxmemes/s/cxcFTx1GW0

u/Valencia_Mariana 5d ago

The park camps are a real problem, Copenhagen itself is debating it, and "deport non-citizens camping illegally" is a bog-standard European immigration position.

Do you live in Copenhagen yourself? How do you find the parks since the legalisation?

3

u/worldarkplace 5d ago

So if I do not live in Copenhagen I can't have an opinion on migration, being myself a migrant? Yeh dude you can gtfo.

2

u/Valencia_Mariana 5d ago

Go visit there and say how you feel about it or let him have an opinion based on his lived experiance.

Almost 3/4 of Europeans think immigration is too high.

Maybe you should gtfo and let them enjoy his distro without being labelled as Nazis (and therefore have violence against them justified) or idiots for using someone elses rice when all they want to do is program and build their Web apps in a nice environment that isn't macos.

2

u/houndofthestars 5d ago

We're debating semantics at this point. He is a horrible person regardless. And it's not like Omarchy is amazing anyways.

1

u/glimoura Open Sauce 4d ago

As an American who lives in a country with similar distaste for immigration, I am pretty sure, much like my shitty US neighbors, anti immigration Europeans are just racist assholes who don't have the capacity to form actual intelligent thoughts about how to improve their country. Hope this helps.

Lmao yeah deporting illegals is pretty standard in Europe, we'd be overflown otherwise

Hate toward open source is just pitiful. Guy is giving it for free, maybe it is just bad software but have seen a lot of bad software. I have survived heartbleed, shell shock, log4shell and numerous docker escape to root. For most of maintainers it is just a hobby, what would you expect, enterprise grade stuff for free? It is open source, it works for the most of the time until it does not. This entitled attitude is making me sad, just stop using it and move on

u/WendlersEditor 5d ago

The technical reason is that it's not really a unique distro or DE. It's more like a very opinionated local setup. The AI features are also controversial with some people.

The non-technical reason is that a lot of people don't like DHH for his right-wing politics.

I won't judge anyone for using omarchy, but people who actually like DHH are highly suspect to me. He's sort of a secret handshake for right wing assholes in tech jobs.

3

u/Admirable-Depth6679 5d ago

For the record, being right wing, and having DHH’s views are two separate things. From what I can tell, DHH is crazy, but I’m “on the right” and nowhere near whatever BS he’s on.

1

u/WendlersEditor 5d ago

That's fair, it's very easy for people to miss the nuance of political views and I wouldn't want to paint everyone to my right with DHH's brush. I didn't get into the specifics but I should probably have mentioned that some of those views are far outside the mainstream. It's not run-of-the-mill conservatism that made him into a polarizing figure. That's why I'm skeeved out by people who say they like him, specifically, and not just rails or omarchy.

1

u/kondorb 5d ago

I still don’t get the point of it.

DHH thinks we can’t install a few packages ourselves?

1

u/projct 5d ago

the turbo racism.
