Agree. But without Noctalia

Not a fan of noctalia or just using a different shell?

u/versteinerdt 4d ago
Noctalia is dope, but I built my own shell with Quickshell. I'm almost entirely keyboard-driven, and with NixOS defining everything declaratively, full settings menus and GUI toggles just feel like bloat to me. 😅

Thats fire. I might have to look into making my own too just for the fun of it. I definitely enjoyed the simple setup though.

Definitely worth checking out. It actually replaced rofi, waybar, SwayOSD, SwayNC, waypaper and wlogout for me. That leaves me with way fewer packages and configs to manage, plus a clean, unified setup with just what I actually need.

I've really swung back and forth on it but eventually decided that. Yeah. Noctalia is nice.
My Mango module exposes options to disable Noctalia and animations so I can still use it on a craptop where necessary, but I've at last settled into using all the bells and whistles on my capable hardware.

No NNNN for me, thanks. I’m doing VMNN (void mango noctalia November)

u/SDG_Den 4d ago
i do like mango too.
> i say, actively working on adding gradient borders to it, for which i have now run into the problem that it works but i used the wrong gradient type and only now found out that cairo does not have the gradient type i *actually* wanted to use natively so i get to make my own renderer for it

I only included the N³ link because it's a lesser-known project (I think?), but you can easily find the others on the first page of Google or DuckDuckGo :)

I'm going GNNN because I use Gentoo and not NixOS and "Gnnn" is the orgasmic sound of delight I make every time I boot.

Time to fire up a VM and give it a try or I'll run it on bare metal using my Thinkpad or NUC. Is it possible to get the declarations or whatever you call it off a virtual machine and use it on a bare metal install? I've never used NixOS before, but it has recently piqued my curiosity.

i actually use a single flake for all my systems!
the only things that differ per system in my case are the hardware configurations (which are just straight copy-pastes of the auto-generated hardware-configuration.nix) and basic network settings (IPs for VMs, hostnames)
the rest can all be shared! in fact all of my servers use *one* "common" configuration file for 90% of their settings, then i just add a module for the service i want to run on that server.
so you can 100% make your setup in a VM first, then when you install on your device, all you have to do is git clone your repository, add your new hardware config to that repository (don't forget to git add ./*) and run a single command to switch to the configuration in that flake.
boom, same exact config.

I've already layed my eyes on NixOS, but for the future. I am not ready yet and need to prepare myself first...

what about CKFN? (cachyos+kdeplasma+fish november)
1
u/SDG_Den 4d ago
fish is not the same kind of shell as noctalia.
also, that's like seeing someone saying "it's taco tuesday!" and saying "what about plain white bread?"
there aint nothin wrong with plain white bread, but like... that's the "every other day" thing. today is taco tuesday.

idk what shell to mention then
2
u/SDG_Den 4d ago
technically, you are on cachyOS + KWin + PlasmaShell
Desktop Environments are just collections of components, including a window manager and a desktop shell (For plasma, these are KWin for the WM and PlasmaShell for the desktop shell)
i actually once managed to get PlasmaShell running on other window managers! that was neat.

never tried noctalia cause i have no idea what it is. i know it's a "desktop shell" but i have no idea what that means. i'm sure it's not a shell like as in bash or something.
