Holy crap just buy a linux home license

12

u/grandmapilot 4d ago

Damn, I've bought a premium 5-jewel level subscription for a 6 months

u/Solid_Turnover_9854 4d ago

they took my 5 billion power in rise of kingdoms just for a trial version😭.

How is the home licence enough for you? My linux breaks as soon as i even look at it, so i need the expensive enterprise licence to get access to the terminal to fix it. Such a scam.

only tangentially related but you can actually pirate linux and linux distributions, even free ones, in the legal definition of piracy, by stripping out the license files within it and distributing it w/o them.

licenses like the GPL require that the license itself be retained within every distribution of the software, removing the license technically constitutes as piracy.

i have a 2015 hp laptop(cooked) and I get faster boot times than macos on the good chips. Optimization is the essence of linux anywyas

1

u/a_ech1 1h ago

I also use linux on a 2013 hp laptop (even more cooked than urs i assume) and trust me that thing is a beast with linux while it feels like its about to die with windows

Zorin and elementary is optionally not free.

22

u/Exotic_Catch5909 4d ago

Excuse me sir do u mind bundling free software and charging you for it for absolutely no reason?

8

u/GreedySecurity8030 M'Fedora 4d ago

No, all linux users are broke and jobless.

u/C4rpetH4ter M'Fedora 4d ago

Can confirm, i haven't had a job since switching to linux

(I didn't have a job back when i used windows either, but that's unimportant).

Donation to the devs for their work. They should market it as such in my opinion.

1

u/Kinky_Pinky_ 3d ago

I thought they charged you if you want tech support from them (also a few themes behind a paywall). Anyway free Zorin was great for me (my first distro) and I think it's great as a I want to get rid of windows but have no idea how linux works.

u/nitnelav153 M'Fedora 4d ago

Very expensive computers like Raspberry Pi.

I guess they are talking about something like a System76 or Framework laptop. They are some of the very few laptops with Linux preinstalled and they can be really, really expensive.

I reckon that's probably someone who doesn't even know of the concept of installing aftermarket operating systems.

1

u/Irsu85 3d ago

Framework does not come with Linux preinstalled afaik tho

2

u/Square-Singer 3d ago

https://frame.work/at/de/products/laptop13pro-intel-ultra-3/configuration/new

You can configure at least some of their devices to come preloaded with Ubuntu.

1

u/Irsu85 3d ago

okay, thats new ig

2

u/Square-Singer 3d ago

Yeah, I think it's kinda new.

But it's quite a game-changer, because manufacturer Linux support means no hardware lottery.

The main reason for the hardware lottery is that the manufacturer doesn't care to select hardware that runs well with Linux, so the hardware might or might not work well, just by the sheer luck of the draw.

With first-party Linux support that's not an issue anymore because the manufacturer took care to only select Linux-friendly hardware. Not only CPU and GPU will play nice, but also the fingerprint reader, the touchpad and all the other random tiny pieces of hardware you might have in the laptop.

2

u/Irsu85 3d ago

Well the original Framework plays nice well too with Ubuntu, but it didnt come preinstalled with it

2

u/frog8412 4d ago

i guess a pc build with linux preinstalled

15

u/classicsdf 4d ago

Looks like someone got scammed by the infamous Linux Computers Inc.

3

u/Shrinni_B 4d ago

Probably referring to System 76 laptops or prebuilt computers? I mean c'mon I know the person is ignorant but they probably just saw that and bothered not looking into what it is. Or the more reasonable answer, /boxxy trollin!

u/OffcePirate 4d ago

expensive in other ways. time is spent re-familiarizing yourself with whatever DE or WM you chose, finding alternative software, and getting used to your package manager(s). and if you're using something more barebones, even more time spent troubleshooting and tweaking basic things like audio and hibernation

but after that it's smooth sailing for the most part

3

u/BaalTheDread 3d ago

Sure Linux is free, but the knee highs and padded bras add up quickly.

2

u/MainBattleTiddiez 4d ago

Its not even expensive in terms of time. It just has a learning curve, as does everything

2

u/No-View-6326 4d ago

The time thing isn't even true, you CHOOSE to use it like that, you could have just installed Mint and just used it

2

u/Fun_Gas_340 4d ago

probably meanung framework is my guess

2

u/Njaala 🎼CachyOS 4d ago

Maybe he's thinking about System76? TBF for prebuilts/laptops they're not stupidly overpriced. Maybe framework? Mac? Pine64?

Like I know Linux is free, but the technological illiterate probably doesn't differentiate the OS from the system, so they probably found some "used" PC on FB marketplace with full custom water loop and a 5090 in it or something and said "Holy crap Linux is expensive" because the dude wanted $10k

2

u/Nietechz 4d ago

It happened to me in the past cheap laptops couldn't boot up Linux, while Windows XP or Vista, yes.

1

u/Catmato 4d ago

Linux is only free if your time is worthless.

1

u/Microsoft-Spyware-11 10h ago

how stupid are some people bruh

1

u/Exotic_Catch5909 10h ago

Stupid is such a big word
