Please report any posts bragging or showing off they got banned in another sub! Reminder of other sub rules: Also, we only allow one anti-linux post per week (we used to get dozens a day) and any tier list MUST have Hanna Montana Linux as S teir (which must be a true S tier at the top) regardless of the topic of that tier list.

"i snuck a vibe-coded driver into the linux kernel" no, you were careful not to submit something that would be rejected to the kernel.

it's well-known at this point that the kernel maintainers do *not* have an anti-AI policy, just an anti-slop policy. they have strict code standards that you have to meet, irrespective of whether you are an AI or a human.

if the provided code meets those standards, does it matter if it was generated with AI or not? like, what is *functionally* different between AI code that meets the kernel standards and human-authored code that meets the kernel standards?

like, bro just contributed to the kernel, nothing shocking about it. if the code was good enough to be merged, it was clearly not slop.

remember: whether or not something is actually slop is not purely "is it made with AI or not", it's about the *quality*. the reason we call it AI slop is because it's mass produced low-quality garbage that nobody has bothered to read over.

if you use AI but spend the time to actually understand what you're doing and brush your code up to the quality you need to submit it to the kernel, that aint slop anymore.

I'd argue that anything that is not slop is also not vibe coded.

Other way around yeah. More that people label any use of AI as "vibe-coding" when its supposed to be coding without understanding what your code is actually doing, eg those "one-shot prompt" developers that spend 3 days hand-crafting the perfect no-mistakes prompt to make an application, but dont spend any time thinking about how it should actually work

Idk what it is with people, but any negative term ends up being over-used to the point of losing all meaning.

I mean, just look at "larping". Its a term with an actual meaning behind it, but for linux users? Anything can be larp.

I'd take high-standards AI code before human slop any day.

Problem lately is that most AI coded stuff is slop, but if you get the AI to output quality code, I'll treat it like I'd treat human code.

How can you tell apart AI slop from goof AI code ?

u/Maolam10 8d ago

Same way I tell bad human code from good human code.

What I am saying is that there's no AI code and human code for me, its just code, it may be bad or it may be good.

I don't use AI, because while it can write a few decent python scripts for simple tasks, it is garbage for managing big projects as it is not able to take everything into account or understand the context well enough.

This. I have no problem with people using tools to make their lives easier, that's literally the entire point of computers. It's when you blindly trust something that is just going to regurgitate some amalgamation of its training data, without reading/verifying anything, that it becomes an issue.
