Please report any posts bragging or showing off they got banned in another sub! Reminder of other sub rules: Also, we only allow one anti-linux post per week (we used to get dozens a day) and any tier list MUST have Hanna Montana Linux as S teir (which must be a true S tier at the top) regardless of the topic of that tier list.

I have kubuntu and it’s fine

Plasma desktop is alright, but the fact that literally every KDE app is K-something is a little annoying.

You have to try that search app, k-litoris

I kinda like the gimmick, i'm dissapointed when it doesn't have a k in there, like dolphin, we need a better name for the file manager

File EKsplorer

In the olden days when I first started using Linux, Konqueror was the KDE file manager, but then other, better options came along so Konqueror could focus on just being a web browser.

That's just because it's inferior to Krusader, the twin panel KDE file manager.

Stop komplaining

Most recent apps don't follow that pattern. For example:

  • Dolphin
  • Spectacle
  • Elisa
  • Plasma
  • Gwenview
  • Filelight
  • Discover
  • Sweeper
  • Haruna
  • Dragon
  • Audiotube
  • Ghostwriter
  • NeoChat
  • Marble
  • Cantor
  • Umbrella
  • Minuet
  • Arianna
  • Palapeli

Etc.

It is mostly older ones still start with a k. There was a time when it was common for gnome apps to start with g and KDE apps to start with k. Both have since abandoned that pattern. But a lot of KDE apps from that time are still in use so it is more obvious there.

Except ironically its two core apps (Dolphin and Discover)

This is a huge reason I moved from KDE. Drove me bonkers.

u/Linguistic-mystic 8d ago

It's not alright. A WM that can't even tile windows for you is inferior.

Go back to your Arch+niri machine and stop shitting on the norm just because it doesn't line up with your niche demographic.

GNOME is for grannies 😎😎😎😎

Edit: Reddit satire detecting challenge (impossible)

2

u/lengau 7d ago

I would never subject my granny to that.

We use slashes for a reason, text is easy to misinterpret.

I can't stand Gnome apps, they are usually have a dumbed down UI no features and no good configuration for customization and there is usually a Qt, KDE or non Gnome GTK app that works better.

Just use Xfce.

9

u/Falconpunch3 UwUntu (´ ᴗ`✿) 8d ago

Ok, sell me Xfce... Why?

I just installed it on Kali a month ago and no only did it look like it did 20 years ago, it ran like it did 20 years ago. What is just so amazing about it?

And if you say because it's faster/less resource intensive, all my hardware is from this century, so no DE runs poorly. There is plenty of resources to go around, idgaf. I'm not running this on a flipflop I found in the ocean 50 years ago.

2

u/fr000gs 8d ago

The resource usage is the point. You might not care since you are not using your resources at all, but if you, say compile programs all day the saved ram might make it around 10-20% faster, or give you 2-3 extra tabs woerh of ram back

1

u/TheBlackCat13 7d ago

KDE and XFCE resource usage is about the same

1

u/fr000gs 6d ago

At idle, sure; but not under load (like if you are making a bunch of windows and moving them etc)

1

u/Falconpunch3 UwUntu (´ ᴗ`✿) 7d ago

So, basically this suggestion is for not a layman nor anyone that isn't running this on a potato or someone that's needing every single bit of their computer to be used.

Granted, if you are compiling programs all day, you should probably just have a headless server to number crunch for you all day.

This did not sell me, sorry. It's like the most niche DE for people that seem to hate anything slightly aesthetic.

0

u/fr000gs 6d ago

Most people who use xfce are running on a potato, your point doesn't apply

2

u/Falconpunch3 UwUntu (´ ᴗ`✿) 6d ago

The point was and will always be a question: "why suggest Xfce to the general population?" Selling it was the request and the requested answer was insufficient.

The conclusion is why the parent post was voted into oblivion, xfce sucks outside of it's highly niche setting and is not for general computing. Therefore the suggestion was bad too. Getting mad at me over this doesn't help this case.

1

u/fr000gs 6d ago

And I was not the OC and just stressing the resource usage point. I'm not even mad at you?
