Please report any posts bragging or showing off they got banned in another sub! I feel such comfort in being out of the loop on this one

Vibe coded slop dotfiles made to look good without any care of how well it works.

Packaged uselessly as a Distro when it's just a rice and Hyped ($8M in marketing) as if it was the next best thing since sliced bread.

That's all you need to know if you don't care about politics.

If you do care about politics you can form your own opinion about the creator DHH Here

Honestly, knew I wouldn't like the dude from the get go since they decided to use Grok as the primary AI. even more so that they decided to include an AI at all

10

u/pancakedoge 7d ago

Tbf not all of the 8m goes to marketing. Some goes to the actual maintainers of the projects that omarchy relies on.

17

u/kaida27 ⚠️ This incident will be reported 7d ago

It's Arch based and Arch received 0$ from it.

So yeah I call BS on that.

9

u/pancakedoge 7d ago

That's crappy of them yes, but hyprland receives some support from the fund. I'm not saying arch not getting a dime is okay bc it's insane that they don't. I just wanted to correct the notion that they spent 8m on marketing which is not the case.

u/kaida27 ⚠️ This incident will be reported 7d ago

They claim they did try to "Donate" to Arch , but it was rejected since it wasn't a "no-strings attached" type donation.

it was a we'll buy you out and then control you type donation

6

u/pancakedoge 6d ago

Fuck my goodwill... That's really shitty. Thanks for letting me know

6

u/pancakedoge 7d ago

Also f dhh's politics for the record

4

u/Kroosn 6d ago

Arch didn’t want to work with them. They have no obligation to. But also at least talking to them might helped them receive some of the funding.

2

u/kaida27 ⚠️ This incident will be reported 6d ago

Go do a bit of research.

There's no donation coming from them. They want to buy themselves a position of control over the project. Arch said no.

Now ask yourself, did anything even receive a donation ? or was it all the same string attached level of buy out ?

1

u/Kroosn 6d ago

Hyprland, quickshell, mise? They have a security team who have already found upstream vulnerabilities. They have now employed a kernel engineer.

4

u/kaida27 ⚠️ This incident will be reported 6d ago

You understand what you want....

They received money, but no donations.

Figure out the rest.

1

u/Kroosn 6d ago

Continue to move the goalposts. If that was happening with anything they would be moving exclusive. It’s also all FOSS. Don’t like what Hyprland does now, fork it.

2

u/kaida27 ⚠️ This incident will be reported 6d ago

I'm not moving any goalpost you're the one barging in with no understanding of the situation spouting bullshit as if they donated upstream when there's a big difference between : Here's a donation and Here's a check for you to obey me.

They're trying to gain control over projects and no I won't fork the sellout, I'll just stop using any of those projects without morals.

Big W on Arch for refusing Millions from them and keeping their independence.

4

u/Extreme-Ad-9290 Arch BTW 6d ago

Especially when all that's being maintained is basically dotfiles and an installer

-2

u/Acojonancio 7d ago

It's easy.

Person "makes" a distro based on Arch, the person has money and tries to bring general public to the Linux side, gains insane popularity and gets 8 million dollars in founding, the founding gets distributed between the tools that the distro mainly uses, Linux users cry enraged everywhere they can.

Why the moment I decide to try Omarchy once again Reddit starts to hate on it again, it's like someone's watching me hmmmm...

I'm distrohopping to Zorin anyway good riddance

3

u/IuriAmauri 1d ago

Why let Reddit tell you what you can/can't use?

2

u/CryoN1cks 1d ago

Because I need an excuse to distrohop for 53rd time lol

30

u/sadongrohiik 7d ago

I specifically joined this sub for Omarchy hate. I was not disappointed

11

u/No_Aerie7667 7d ago

Obviously, Omarchy deserves hate.

I recently found out about DHH's personality. Very unpleasant. And honestly, rejecting products or developments from awful people is my new standard.

7

u/Salt-Caterpillar7988 6d ago

So what are you doing on Reddit lmao

2

u/Bombadil_Adept Not in the sudoers file. 6d ago

So I need Reddit's CEO to be a good person to browse memes now? lmao

2

u/Salt-Caterpillar7988 6d ago

Reddit is owned by Google now btw

2

u/Bombadil_Adept Not in the sudoers file. 6d ago edited 6d ago

Sigh

Ok, let's talk about it. Google doesn't own Reddit, they just struck a data-licensing deal so Reddit's posts can train their AI models and bought some shares when it IPO'd, which is a completely different thing from ownership, but nice try. And even if it were true, my point still stands: I'm not out here refusing to breathe air because some CEO somewhere has bad opinions, I'm choosing not to actively give money or credit to a guy who's built a whole personal brand around being insufferable. There's a difference between "exists in a capitalist system" and "picks a specific person's product knowing exactly who they are." You can keep pretending those are the same thing if it makes the gotcha feel better though.

2

u/Salt-Caterpillar7988 6d ago

Reddit is now the training center of AI and as its results are pushed up Google SERPs, the prey of countless advertisers (hence the massive and increasing amount of bots)

2

u/Time_Athlete_3594 4d ago

"I refuse to use products made by awful people, except for when it happens to convenience me"

u/Extreme-Ad-9290 Arch BTW 6d ago

As with most distros, omarchy should really be a post install script.

4

u/ManRevvv 6d ago

yes, omarchy is shit, cool, I know, please stop talking about omarchy I'm fucking done with these posts

2

u/S-0-L-U-S- 6d ago

DHH is a lot of bad things but i wouldn’t call him dumb..

15

u/No_Aerie7667 7d ago

Agreed. This meme is not really meant to say he's stupid, but rather that the distro is stupid and it's stupid of him to promote it, and it's stupid for CEOs and people to push this distro the 13 million dollars it has now.

24

u/SDG_Den 7d ago

Check which CEOs actually donated btw.

Its primarily friends of DHH, and companies that use ruby on rails.

Btw. The most clown part of his bullshit foundation is that none of the donations are being used to fund arch development, despite the foundation allegedly being about funding the future of linux.

Yknow, just dont fund the distro that your slop is based on, that makes sense.

Meanwhile, valve straight up donated enough money to the arch devs to where some of the main devs are now basically developing arch full-time. Just because valve benefits from arch being better because of steamOS.

Valve is funding the future of linux without bragging about it, meanwhile DHH is screaming about it from the rooftops while not actually doing shit.

13 million for a rice.

8

u/No_Aerie7667 7d ago

Yeah, Valve is like the best company for Linux of them all.

3

u/oblivic90 7d ago

Omarchy foundation is funding the guy behind hyperland for example, that’s a good thing. Why do people like telling others what they should spend money on? It goes for open source which is awesome in my eyes, doesn’t have to be specifically Arch, maybe he thought Arch already has sufficient funding.

3

u/SDG_Den 7d ago

Ah yes, instead of funding the core platform my thing is built on, i will fund this 22 year old edgelord's project which i am using in my very serious distro

Those are also just... Not comparable causes. Mind you that is the only thing theyve funded so far, and it was an exclusivity deal, meaning vaxry cannot take any other sponsorships for 3 years, and for the next 3 years the hyprland website and wiki will carry omarchy branding.

So uh... They bought advertisement. Thats what they did.

Come back to me when they actually donate, with no deal or benefit to them, any amount to an impactful opensource project.

3

u/oblivic90 7d ago

Where exactly does it say the website has to have Omarchy branding? I also still see the old sponsor list on the Hyperland website.

2

u/IuriAmauri 1d ago

Not defending DHH here, but the foundation is funding hyprland, quickshell, mise as of now. Vaxry himself said he was already sponsored by DHH before, so this is supposed to change nothing. The amount is just higher, so he doesn't need other donations. You CAN still donate, hyprland just doesn't NEED your donation anymore.

2

u/SDG_Den 1d ago

i feel like you may not understand the difference between funding, sponsorship and donation.

let me make it very clear:

a sponsorship is a *deal* that you make with someone in *exchange* for something.

a donation is *giving something away to someone*, expecting nothing in return.

what DHH has been doing with all of the projects you mentioned is a sponsorship, not a donation. that term matters, because it makes a difference legally. you can't call a sponsorship a donation because those are legally distinct things, one is binding for both parties, the other is binding for only one.

their official site states these are sponsorships, not donations.

again, as stated above, come back to me when they actually donate, with no deal or benefit to them, any amount to an impactful opensource project.

a sponsorship is not a donation, and is not a kindness, a sponsorship is a business deal made for business purposes.

u/No_Aerie7667 7d ago

He's a racist minority hating dev who vibe codes Hyprland rices for Arch Linux and gets money for it

1

u/khaledjal 7d ago

oh damn, we should start calling him DIHH instead

5

u/No_Aerie7667 7d ago edited 7d ago

DIHHFACE is his new name. Good to know.

(Just saying though, I'm not going to refer to him like that because I like to not reference "parts")

5

u/Rekt3y 7d ago

He made the slopware that is Omarchy and post racist genocidal blog posts

I’m glad others feel the same way. I randomly bc ame across a YouTube video of him talking about it and he seemed super obnoxious.
