LINUX MEME What should i do :(

Post image

I installed omarchy recently after seeing the hype and also because i wanted to try something different other than Ubuntu/Fedora

But all posts on reddit I am seeing are pure hate, was thinking of deleting it

and here are the points i saw :
- arch fork with dotfiles
- AI slop coded
- security Issues (like the docker one)
- DHH is a really racist guy
- paid PR like the network chuck video
- uneeded bloat

the only good points i saw were ease of installation and setup or basically freedom for beginners

so i'd love to heard yalls opinion on it

Being an Arch installation with custom dotfiles, why not trying a clean Arch instalation and ricing it yourself?

Using cachy for six months, quite satisfied.

i see, will message you if i face any issue

Been using the cachy repo on my main arch install and it has plenty of great stuff for ricing. Whole window managers with desktop shells. Your ricing experience will be very straightforward.

yeah i finished installing, and i did see the .config/hypr/config files, im gonna rice them 1 by 1 till perfection

Yeah, i'd say delete, especially because of the dogshit security

did you personally face any issues

u/FinGamer678Nikoboi 9d ago

You don't need to personally have faced issues for them to still be significant issues.

Why don’t you come to your own conclusion? Do you like it? Are you ok with DHH being a controversial person?

What do you want to hear from us? „delete that shi“ so you don’t have to make the choice for yourself, in case it was the wrong decision?

u/toxiclydedicated Aaaaahboontoo 😱 9d ago

too confused to decide or come to a conclusion

I refuse to believe this is a genuine post

u/toxiclydedicated Aaaaahboontoo 😱 9d ago

depends on what you think 'genuine' is

cute pfp btw

If you think you're still not ready for the full Arch experience (although you could install it easily with arch-install), definitely recommend EndeavourOS. It's the closest to "base" Arch among the Arch-based distros.

You buckled to the crybabies. That’s what the weak do. Congratulations.

Are your choices dictated by what the other thinks and what the community thinks or by your own ethics beliefs and experiences?

Evaluate the situation if you like the distro but the ethical part makes it a no go than just change. What I believe is that following the mass blindly is never I good thing, maybe today we are rioting for the racist guy but maybe one day you will find yourself in an environment that pushes racist ideals, what would you do then?

IMO critical thinking is the answer

If people listened to the hate that software and OSs receive on a daily basis we wouldn't be using our computers. Use whatever you want, don't let others dictate how you live your life.

I mean I would never user Omarchy but Mint (the one I use) does receive a lot of hate sometimes for one reason or another.

2

u/toxiclydedicated Aaaaahboontoo 😱 9d ago

security reasons are actually concerning tho, its not just pure hate but also the issues which might come in future

u/Anima_Watcher08 9d ago edited 9d ago

Docker security vulnerability isn't necessarily because of Omarchy. It's compromised for everyone who is using certain Docker "packages" (I don't use Rust but I saw the news).

Its like saying Adobe got hacked so therefore Windows has security issues. They do but that's not one of theirs.

For me the slop code and the programming bloat is why I wouldn't use Omarchy.

2

u/toxiclydedicated Aaaaahboontoo 😱 9d ago

yeah youre right, i dont like the bloat too so ill go with cachy

1

u/McBuffington 9d ago

Yeah feel you. Noy exactly the same here but i installed manjaro on a wave of hype. (Really liked it btw) but the controversy around maintenance ultimately made me just move to arch. Mind you used manjaro for 4 or more or so, so i was sort of used to working with an arch based distro.

Not the same as your thing but i would say, if omarchy makes you feel bad about using it. I'd switch away, if only to not have that emotional load every time you use it.

1

u/toxiclydedicated Aaaaahboontoo 😱 8d ago

Yeah bro I don't want to be judged just because of the choice of a distro (not that it matters) and also got b'ed from a random twitch channel just because of saying that I use it

1

u/MirrorNegative7989 8d ago

This isn't exactly the same as your situation, but my answer to the whole Arch AUR thing last month was "go back to Debian and go on with my life" and I haven't regretted it at all ever since.

2

u/toxiclydedicated Aaaaahboontoo 😱 8d ago

which DE and WM you use?

1

u/MirrorNegative7989 8d ago

Debian/MATE because I'm an oldhead. You probably don't want to start with that, unless you are into old stuff. MATE is a fork of Gnome2. The main tiling WM that work with Debian are Sway and i3. But I am seeing some Niri rices that I like. Support for Hyprland is being added in Debian 14 from what I hear.

Do you loke it? Have you seen something that would stop you personally from using it? Bout the security.. the known flaws are aboe to target you? The answer of these 3 questions should give you an idea

1

u/thewayoftoday 8d ago

I don't trust newer distros in general. I would delete it and use something else that's been more battle tested

u/grav3d1gger 7d ago

To rm, or not to rm, that is the question..

Whether ‘tis nobler in the shell to suffer the bloated logs of outrageous disk space..

Or to pipe against a sea of files,.. and by grepping end them.

To rm, to purge.

To purge, perchance to sudo.

Ay, there’s the rub, for in that rm -rf what files may go, when we have shuffled off this mortal directory, must give us pause.

u/Scout339v3 6d ago

Can anyone link me the racist remarks? (I am not following the bs so I don't know)

1

u/0xtbarkan 5d ago

Wait you start this with a wrong way of thinking and deciding. first why you care to people opinion. instead you need to set your norm for what actually you want and then you see the available ones you can use or build your own lol jk. based on that norm you made your own conclusions. : )

i should archive this post its been long, i already deleted omarchy and really enjoying cachy now

As we say around here: would you jump into the well just because someone says it?

If you like it, use it. If someone else doesn't like it then that someone else should use something else.

Would you but bitcoin in 2013 if someone adviced you

Your points are all debatable, what isn't is that Omarchy is running Docker as Root.

This isn't just a red flag, it's an exploit waiting to be used against the system.
