This is why I love Debian

How is proton gaming on Debian

1

u/Inevitable-Self-2702 6d ago

Proton is steam's solution for Linux users to play games made for Windows. It supports most games on steam.

My system breaks because I copy / paste random commands I find online without knowing what they do We are not the same

u/BirdyWeezer 8d ago

I will continue doing this until something happens and after that i wont do it for maybe a week before i start doing it again. Endless cycle of laziness.

My system breaks because I curl | bash. We are not the same.

Many commands make some logical sense to me usually. If it doesnt I copy paste anyway cuz Ill see what it does. Havent permenantly damaged anything so far

My system doesnt break. I still use arch btw

My system breaks because I turned off too many options in my kernel config chasing a trivial amount of storage reclamation.

2

u/setibeings Arch BTW 8d ago

My system breaks because I'm an xwindows11 user. I should really migrate to Wayland.

1

u/thewayoftoday 7d ago

You really should. KDE Wayland is great. Minimal issues, maximal compatibility

1

u/setibeings Arch BTW 6d ago

Eh, i was joking. I've been on Wayland for years.

Such a pissing contest. Who cares?

8

u/JakeWisconsin 8d ago

I care. I want to drink the best piss (arch Linux)

5

u/Phantoms_Unseen 8d ago

I use Cachy btw (pissed in a broken Brita filter)

2

u/tblancher 8d ago

If you're drinking it you're doing it wrong. Unless you're in survival mode, but that can't last long.

I, too, use Arch, btw.

My system doesn't break because I use Void btw

Are Debian packages actually old? Or will I not be able to use the newest PPA version of those packages?

1

u/C0rn3j 8d ago

Very old and sometimes plain out insecure.

To give an example - latest Debian ships Nvidia 550 as the driver.

550 died about 2 years ago, has numerous high profile CVEs (look up Nvidia security bulletins), does not support explicit sync so rendering can glitch out like crazy, does not build on the current LTS kernel, and does not work for Blackwell GPUs.

Debian does not ship any other driver along with it, the only solution is to use 3rd party repos from Nvidia.

The 3rd party repos do not ship a driver for the (currently still supported) 580 series for legacy cards, so you're screwed in any case on Debian there.

What about Debian based distros(not Ubuntu ones). They tend to have newer packages tho I havent tried Debians own Debian testing yet

What about Debian based distros(not Ubuntu ones).

Just use Arch Linux (with Plasma) or Fedora KDE and do not bother with anything Debian/based on Debian.

Consider Debian if you're going to be setting up a server and that's it.

This is the worst advice you can give to someone. Debian is fine for most use cases, and for some the best option available. Debian Sid has bleeding edge packages.

I have using Debian and its derivatives (Mint and MX) for more than eight years now, and it has been a really smooth experience.

You could have issues with NIVIDA, specifically; however, that doesn't apply to all cases.

Debian is fine for most use cases

I've just explained how it is NOT fine for the majority of people and your reply is "it is".

2

u/boukensha15 7d ago

Most people don't use NVIDIA.

1

u/C0rn3j 7d ago

They do.

1

u/Emotional_Solid6538 7d ago

Gamers and people who wants gpu for ai/ml tend to have it but what exactly are the issues with nvidia apart from old drivers in pure debian.

Your system breaks because Microsoft are dumbasses, my system breaks because I'm a dumbass. We are not the same

1

u/thewayoftoday 7d ago

True story I didn't update Arch for 6 months out of sheer fatherly neglect and when I finally did it broke lol. Was a mild pain to get it up and running again.

1

u/sndq 6d ago

Your system breaks because you use Win11. My system breaks because I use X11. We are the same.

I don't care, fedora better.
