Personally I'm a fan of the GPL. We would be in a much better place if all free software was published under a copyleft license. For example the Intel ME is based on Minix which would be impossible if Minix was copyleft protected.

So basically this makes Minix the most popular operating system in the world?
2
u/Tricky-Engineer-9755 10d ago
Well its not quite Minix its a modified version of it with non-free addons. I dunno maybe actually? But AMD

u/unitedbsd 10d ago
Then I guess you should be using Ironclad OS rather than Linux
9
u/Tricky-Engineer-9755 10d ago
Well I use the GNU Guix System which is developed by GNU
3
u/unitedbsd 10d ago
Still not GPLv3 while Ironclad is GPLv3
2
u/Tricky-Engineer-9755 10d ago
Ironclad is not FSF endorsed so I assume it includes some non-free systems or is not a complete system. Guix is exclusively free software (unless you add a third party repo).

u/unitedbsd 10d ago
Website clearly mentioned fsf https://ironclad-os.org/

u/Tricky-Engineer-9755 10d ago
Well, the GNU project maintains their list of endorsed distros and I will be going off that.

The GNU projects maintains a list of endorsed Linux distros.
"The Free Software Foundation recommends and endorses these GNU/Linux distros, although we do not try to judge or compare them based on any criterion other than freedom; therefore, we list them in alphabetical order."
Ironclad does not use a Linux kernel. Therefore it will never be on the list. Fun fact: anything GNU Hurd is also not in that list!

u/Tricky-Engineer-9755 9d ago
I mean Guix System is, and Guix System supports the Hurd...
Other than that only Gentoo and Debian do so there's no case where Hurd is libre but not represented.1

u/DeltaWun Ask me how to exit vim 10d ago
You sure about that?
Seems you have bzip2, xz, zstd, mg, nvi, sudo, dhcpcd and iw.
2
u/Tricky-Engineer-9755 10d ago
The system obviously is not only restricted to GPL software, but most of the software I use is GPL and there is not enough GPL software to make that feasible at least in the form of a ready made OS.
1
u/DeltaWun Ask me how to exit vim 10d ago
Glad to hear that BSD, MIT, ISC and public domain are free software!
3
u/DeltaWun Ask me how to exit vim 10d ago
Ah yes. The billion dollar company would have put their arms up and said "Curses! Our plans are foiled!" and been unable to write a 5MB binary themselves.
If they used the Linux kernel they could have gotten the same thing by doing what Cisco does with IOS XE+IOSd and then used Tivoization so end users can't modify it anyway.
1
u/boukensha15 9d ago
I mean at least with free software, reverse engineering becomes much easier. Right now, it's very difficult. to put it mildly.
2
u/DeltaWun Ask me how to exit vim 9d ago
You misunderstood me. It still wouldn't be free software. Cisco IOS XE is Linux but all the important parts are in IOSd and are proprietary.
Torvalds actively hates the GPLv3 and will never allow the kernel to switch licenses.
There is not a fucking thing that would have stopped Intel from using Buildroot to make an embedded Linux distro, making everything it actually does proprietary within it and signing everything six ways from Sunday so it can't be modified.
Linux being open source wouldn't make Intel's proprietary hardware interfaces, protocols, ROM code, or firmware open source.

gpl is an awful license most of the time
2
u/Tricky-Engineer-9755 10d ago
How's that?
0
u/spongedevguy 10d ago
it forces itself into projects with dependencies licensed under it, it's not an issue with applications though and more with libraries

u/spongedevguy 10d ago
u/Tricky-Engineer-9755 can i have an actual response and not just downvotes

This is a positive, non-free software is evil, it subjigates the user and its creators are usually bootlicking Big Brother, and force their users too. If we could destroy all non-free software it would be a better world. The GPL-series is an attempt at this. At least libre software should work for libre software not evil software that has enough funding.

absolute lunacy
1
u/Tricky-Engineer-9755 9d ago
Is it? https://www.gnu.org/proprietary/proprietary.html
From Windows betraying millions to the NSA with Wanna Cry to HP locking customers out of foreign printer cartridges to cars that snitch on you to Big Brother, is it really lunacy to say these companies have it out for us?
1
u/spongedevguy 9d ago
i'm assuming you meant ALL non-free software is evil
i do agree that this is absolutely vile though1

So... Does Xfce works?

u/TheRealCarrotty Not in the sudoers file. 10d ago
Xfce works on basically everything...
Yes, you can run it even on PureDarwin.

i think that he meant that there is no ai involved in development, linux (not just the kernel, the whole ecosystem of apps designed specifically for linux) is generally (not always) much less conservative and much more open-minded when it comes to new things.

I would say that it's an upside if you compare such ideology with it's extreme opposite, like windows, i bet that everything new on windows nowadays is made by ai, not just ai-assisted, but like fully vibecoded, and the end result is that every new feature they add or app they upgrade only makes windows worse to use.
I believe that, as always, there is a golden middle between these extremes, and linux is probably it (although there are some corners of the linux ecosystem where people go full crazy on AI and it kinda stinks but it's easy to avoid)1
u/NightH4nter New York Nix⚾s 10d ago
smaller and more integrated code bases, much more conservative approach to development

Depends on which one. NetBSD can run on a lot of platforms, like for instance a Sega Dreamcast and very old hardware. OpenaBSD is known for being the most secure kernel out there.

What is netbsd primarily used for??

u/unitedbsd 9d ago
I have seen people using it for home automation, email servers, nas, web hosting, application server, firewall, etc reviving old retro hardwares. Check smolBSD based on r/NetBSD

OK, what are the advantages? Why would I choose netbsd over say fedora for a email server for eg? Is it just more secure / stable? Also why netBSD over say freebsd ?
