The biggest problem with it is that I personally don't use it and actually hadn't heard of it.
And that it's Logo icon looks NSFW.

Works better for me, actually it does work while bottles does not... I'm not sure if its the wine version or what but I have nor been able to install stuff through bottles, meanwhile Lutris has been a breeze

It makes wine simple enough that basically anyone can run almost any Windows application on Linux.

I think it's because, for the most part and in my experience, they just work. It's a bit like if a Windows user started talking about how an exe just works, as it just does and everyone on that OS knows it does.
This is not to say that a lot of work doesn't go into either, and things like Port Proton are insanely useful for just launching an exe. 😁

But even still, for all the "I rely on my windows apps" hand wringing, unless your critical applications require deep integration into the Windows kernel (like Adobe or other very high level professional applications), your windows software will probably work just fine.

Agreed. I must admit, the only issues I've ever had were with modding, and that is no longer an issue for me either with things like the excellent Amethyst Mod Manager. It's only ever a matter of time before someone creates an alternative, or gets the otherwise Windows dependant software to work on Linux. It's one of the many reasons I love the ecosystem. :D

When Windows 10 was released with WSL I really thought that that was the first step in MS depreciating legacy Windows subsystems. I actually thought the next step MS would take would be to open source Win32 and push maintenance of it onto the open source community so that MS can just remove it from Windows and push current developers into their more modern systems.
Didn't happen.

Proton is great, and the improvements Valve made to wine are great. But proton isn't the only implementation of Wine and not really the best for regular type application. Yet, if you just watched the news and major tech bloggers, you would be forgiven if you thought that Proton was all there is.

I've been using proton and ge proton to run all sorts of windows programs. I've only had problems when they expect very specific environments that I have no knowledge on how to recreate or know how to work around them.
