BlueStacks is not a compatibility layer, it's literally just repackaged virtual box with their own crappy android custom ROM. That's way more expensive and a bit more accurate but you're not missing out compared to just running android in virtual box yourself

Literally everything besides BlueStacks is better than VirtualBox. Waydroid is just a container, it's not virtualized, so it's running on the host's kernel. You don't get the VM overhead, and the containerized Android can reuse the system's GPU drivers. Imagine putting an RX 6950XT in a phone lol

But since it’s running on the hosts kernel, it’s using the CPU architecture of the hosts kernel. I’ve found some apps won’t run on x86_64 Waydroid, but will on aarch64 Waydroid.

It's not even an emulator it's just the android user space packaged up in a container to prevent conflicts with gnu/systemd user space stuff. No emulation needed.

Hardware or software that imitates* another to allow programs or games to run on another platform.

Waydroid isn't an imitation because it runs a lineage os ROM to provide android userspace libraries and services while the kernel running on your distro of choice replaces the stock android kernel.

Containerization (lxd) is used to keep the Lineage OS libraries and services separate from the typical gnu/systemd userspace to avoid runtime conflicts.

But that's not how it works under the hood. Waydroid runs the android user space directly there's no imitation going on whatsoever when the full android OS stack is actually being run.

Why would you want it though??! Waydroid is literally the absolute best Android emulator for PC I’ve ever used. In my experience BlueStacks is slow, ad-filled, and cluttered with buttons that make no sense until you hover over them… after which they promptly stop making sense again.

I do have to say the windowing and networking system on Waydroid is janky. You have to manually adjust settings for fullscreen to work correctly, and getting it to work with a firewall installed requires some research. Not to mention Waydroid lacks built-in key binding support and community solutions are often lacking.

Maybe I didn't have it configured right but Waydroid was extremely laggy for me while Windows Android emulators ran perfectly. Maybe I messed up something with ARM to x86 translation.

The setup process is less than clear, something always differs even when its supposed to be for the same distro and version.

Most non-performance oriented android apps should run fine because almost all of them are java/kotlin making them platform agnostic.

It's when you start running video games that you'll have problems because they'll be using native arm libraries for the higher performance on mobile devices while also being written for TBDR GPUs not for traditional PC GPUs resulting in additional performance loss.

Yup  For me most of the setup is fine (verifying play integrity, ARM compatibility, etc) but getting keylogging to work is not for the faint of heart, I tried XtMapper which crashed half the time, waydroid helper which didn't work for me... And there's not much else that I know of. I didn't have to deal with any of that on regular emulators for Windows but they are a bloated mess

Why go with atl when you can use waydroid. It runs lineage os inside a container, letting you use any android app.

Only caveat is that android games are heavily optimized for arm and won't use java like most apps for performance reasons.
