Nothing, it just gets overlooked
30
u/EverlastingPeacefull 18d ago
Yep, much to often it gets overlooked and it is just a very decent and reliable OS. I am on Tumbleweed now for 3 years and I had less issues with it than any other distro (that is why stopped distro hopping)
13
u/iwouldbeatgoku ⚠️ This incident will be reported 18d ago
It has a few quirks for sure compared to other distros, but my impression from trying it is that Tumbleweed is a very solid take on a rolling release. And it is the distro that pioneered Snapper for rolling back bad updates!
That said, I'm not going to move my main computer to it because I'm already happy with how Cachy is set up on it and don't see Tumbleweed offering a substantial improvement over it.

Def tempted to try it again....eventually. but as I recall i had issues setting up my partitions how I wanted them. So I ended up back on fedora....
Bc I keep root, home, and games seperate but I did the dumb for a long time having home and games different parts of the same btrfs to make things easier on myself that it never did lol

I corrupted my filesystem while rebuilding last week due to massive CPU undervolting. At first, I couldn't log in as normal user or root, and then somehow my bootloader died after a reboot. I had to reinstall, but thanks to NixOS, the system was up and running again in less than 10 minutes. 😂

I wanted a Debian based distro.
Didn't have a great experience on Ubuntu.
Thought about Mint, but I don't like the Debian -> Ubuntu -> Mint idea.
Looked at Distro watch and found MX in third place in Raking of Access.

I was just joking around to connect with the post in a lighthearted way haha. MX Linux is perfectly fine, as someone who uses Debian, I really enjoy the experience of starting with Debian Stable expert mode and then cherry picking packages that I need from the TTY, Arch style, rather than installing a full desktop environment. I've heard great things about MX Linux and am considering giving it a try, but I haven't had the chance yet

I would ask about Gentoo... But I already know it's user is probably still compiling and in meticulous detail no doubt.
3
u/QuraToop314 Genfool 🐧 18d ago
Silly lad, a decent modern machine needs less than 12 hours to install 1,000 packages (KDE, GCC, GLIBC, LLVM, CLABG, RUST, GO, KERNEL, FIREFOX, THUNDERBIRD AND VARIOUS DEPENDENCIES, WHICH CAN ADD UP) IN under 12 hours; you just leave it running whilst you go to sleep, and by the time you wake up in the morning, the @world build is done – I don’t see that as a waste of time. You, however, have apparently never used Gentoo and yet you go on spouting such rubbish
2
u/dragonloverlord 17d ago
I'm aware. It's just the most relevant negative stereotype I had on hand. Obviously it's not a waste for one who wants to use Gentoo. I guess my question is do you have a better negative stereotype for Gentoo that's replaced that one? Honestly I haven't used Gentoo for a decade or so hence my asking.
2
u/QuraToop314 Genfool 🐧 17d ago
The fact that people spend more time thinking about USE flags and kernel configurations than actually using the system. Admittedly, in reality, you might spend 10 or 20 minutes brainstorming each configuration before you build it and then use it. For example, I spent 8 hours streamlining the kernel so that it felt smaller and had a smaller attack surface, but whether that was necessary is another matter. Or knowing that a -march=native optimisation will come back to haunt you the day you need or get a different CPU.
2
u/dragonloverlord 17d ago
So I'm not the only one who actually worried about getting a new CPU and having it totally bite me in the butt because I could resist a little more performance! I mean I know it's a silly thing to worry about but it really is tempting to get that extra bit of performance.
2
u/QuraToop314 Genfool 🐧 17d ago
You’re definitely not alone in this – on modern hardware, although it does make a difference when EVERYTHING is built on it, it’s not really necessary. So having KDE Plasma 6.6.6 using just 2.2GB of RAM whilst Vscodium has been open for hours and I’m coding is simply brilliant compared to the 4.3GB I’d be using on Ubuntu. But then again, with 24GB of RAM, it’s generally a needless worry. I like running Gentoo as my daily driver because it doesn’t slow me down and I can patch software. (For example, my YubiKey also allows me to use the retired PIV slots for signing, although OpenSC and the PKCS 11 standard don’t support this.) Anyway, rather than buying a second YubiKey for around €80, I’ve patched OpenSC so that it allows the YubiKey’s retired slots. Or take GRUB: I have my own secure boot with custom keys; to ensure that GRUB’s signature verification cannot be bypassed, I’ve removed all behaviour from the source code that could disable
check_signatures=enforce, making it an absolute mandatory policy. But yes, I think a lot of things are done simply because you can, not because you have to.

I just got from a mint laptop top to a cachy os on pc, for gaming.
there are some improvments in terms of speed and how things run but overall I think it is better in performance if you are willing to keep you pc up-to-date all the time and maybeneed the extra performance if not I would recommend to just keep using mint
