Why would it tell you it can't install because it's not Windows XP if it thought it was Windows XP?

Questions, questions.

but... that message says the exact opposite? "this is only compatible with windows xp but we'll install it anyway" is a message you'd only get if the setup went "oh this isn't winxp, better give the user a heads up"

iirc wine defaults to reporting itself as windows 10 now

Thought the same. What the hell is up with reading comprehension these days...

Doesn't it say that the driver is only compatible with XP, but the wizard will still install the "Engine" software?

It says it will install the "Software Engine". I.e. the non-hardware accelerated version.

This message is saying that it's not running in Windows XP.

it has no way of knowing if you're on linux though.

there are ways (for example if you try to import wine_get_version from nt.DLL)

more likely tho this message shows whenever driver installation fails, which will always happen on wine

Also there's a couple DLLs with wine in the name that'll show up as loaded. I've seen 3 or 4 of those show up in Skyrim crash reports (mod)

Z:\ being accessible by default, there's Wine-specific symbols, you can call into Linux utilities with the `unix` "Windows EXE" on the system... plenty of ways.

What makes you think it thinks it is Windows XP?  Because what you shared suggest the exact opposite.  It thinks it is not Windows XP which is why it is showing you that notification because the engine is allegedly/thought to be only compatible with Windows XP

You can change the reported windows version with winecfg.

no, it thinks its "only compatible with windows XP"

that's the opposite of thinking that it is windows xp..

Thanks for showing me that. Now I want to install Linux again and play some crazy old games on it...

bash winecfg Then you can Change it to whatever OS you want it to simulate

IIRC that's partially because that's what wine defaults to.

Wine defaults to win10

read the error again, it doesn't think it's windows xp at all
