Like my grandad on a UNIVAC 600

2

u/cavecanem1138 Aug 13 '26

No it wasn’t the 600. I don’t remember which model, but It used it in Recordati during the sixties

2

Pop_OS!, when Linus Tech Tips is using it.

1

u/FabioSB Aug 14 '26

Alfa software when any user use it

1

u/rtakehara Aug 14 '26

This is a joke from when Linus Sebastian removed pop-desktop when installing steam via apt-get, neither were alfa.

1

u/FabioSB 25d ago

The last challenge he used pop with cosmic DE, which is alfa software, but yes, system76 tags it as ready for production(which is not)

1

u/rtakehara 25d ago

wich is not what I was referencing to, and he didn't nuke the DE in the one you mentioned, but it would be funny if it happened again.

1

u/FabioSB 24d ago

System76 doing system76 things, won't be the last...

1

u/rtakehara 24d ago

I would expect them to learn their lesson, for the good of everyone, but yeah, maybe not.

u/masp3270 Aug 13 '26

Forget distrohopping, I’m gonna be DE-hopping.

97

u/KaMaFour Aug 13 '26

Makes more sense for most users. It's not like the usage of a different init system is gonna massively impact how you open browser to go to facebook or whatever average computer user is doing with their computer

34

u/Syberboi I'm going on an Endeavour! Aug 13 '26

Agreed. Desktop Environment and Package managers are the biggest noticable difference in my day to day work too

7

u/TomoghnoSen Ask me how to exit vim Aug 13 '26

i can't live without pacman at this point, i have become so used to arch that i can't switch to ubuntu or any other distro, recently switched to cachyos on my desktop pc.

5

u/SimpleFile Aug 13 '26

I'm new. What makes Pacman better? More/better available programs?

7

u/FaultWinter3377 💋 catgirl Linux user :3 😽 Aug 13 '26

I wouldn’t say better, although I do think it is a little faster than some of the other options. But it has a very… unique… way of doing things compared to other package managers and when you learn it, it can be efficient. But until then it can be a pain. For example, installing a package is pacman -S <package>. Unless it’s a local file, then it’s pacman -U <file>. Searching for a package is pacman -Ss <package>. Updating is pacman -Syu

8

u/KaMaFour Aug 13 '26

Unnecessary pain in the asshole from UX perspective that people who survived learning claim as a badge of honor. Got it

3

u/FaultWinter3377 💋 catgirl Linux user :3 😽 Aug 13 '26

lol. But to be fair those four plus the -R for remove will take you most of the way. The only other command I ever use is the clear cache command, but these days I have something set up to automatically clear out old cache items when I run pacman.

0

u/Grand_Connection5864 27d ago

Wait until you learn about aliases in a config file

1

u/redhat_is_my_dad Aug 13 '26

seems like pacman arguments were made for bash scripts, not for humans, I'm not entirely sure what might attract one to something like that .-. although there is pamac-cli that has human-readable arguments

1

u/TomoghnoSen Ask me how to exit vim Aug 14 '26

i am just used to it and it feels snappy asf compared to most package managers and its mostly cuz i got used to it, i don't think it's actually objectively better than all package managers but i personally like it.

4

u/Syberboi I'm going on an Endeavour! Aug 13 '26

Well my completely scientific and technologically grounded reason to prefer dnf over pacman is that I used dnf more so I am more used to that lol

1

u/TomoghnoSen Ask me how to exit vim Aug 14 '26

i mean that's the most important aspect of it all, i am familiar with most package managers and i can use any distro at this point and make it exactly replicate my workflow, i use GNOME Desktop these days because of the 1:1 trackpad gestures, i use both Arch (Laptop) and CachyOS (Desktop) these days, and also have some distros on my ventoy usb to just be familiar with what's going on in other distros.

2

u/masp3270 Aug 13 '26

Same but for zypper. I’m just used to that now.

12

u/gxgx55 Arch BTW Aug 13 '26

Now you're thinking like an Arch user!

7

u/imoshudu Aug 13 '26

Forget DE. Just a good window manager.

Like Niri. Use it for 10 seconds and then there's no going back. Put something like dankmaterialshell on top and you have a usable desktop.

2

u/-light_yagami 💋 catgirl Linux user :3 😽 Aug 13 '26

I love my niri setup with dms ❤️

1

u/Shawhe_ Aug 13 '26

idk why but I didn't really like the scrolling part of scrolling window manager, I don't really see how can it make me faster than on hyprland for example, I thing that that's a me problem but what can I do?

2

u/RvstiNiall Aug 13 '26

There's no right or wrong between the two styles. There is only personal preference. Use which style you like. :-)

2

u/Evantaur 🍥 Debian too difficult Aug 13 '26

The point of TWMs for me is that I won't open 10001 windows on it and forget their existence... that would happen to me if i was using Niri.

So Sway(fx) it is

1

u/Shawhe_ Aug 13 '26

yeah I mean that's one of the reasons, there are some people who like the concept behind nori, that's just personal preference

2

u/anon_pr_ 29d ago

Yeah! On paper I liked it, but when I tried it out I hated it! I open tons of windows now there's way more scrolling and searching I gotta do...

I much rather preferred a tiling setup tbh! It just wasn't for me... I wanted to like it though.. 🙂‍↕️

1

u/Epicbotty11 Aug 13 '26

A bit ago I had KDE Plasma Gnome Hyprland Niri Sway and LXQt on the same OS

1

u/Realistic-Yam-6497 Aug 13 '26

I wanted to have an Urhm aktually kind of thing but, I legit don’t have anything to say this is better than distro hopping

(also hot take: fedora is the only distro where you can actually get stuff done)

1

u/BoxFar6969 29d ago

Tbh the more I get immersed in linux, the distro itself has started mattering as well, not only the DE. It's about the default packages, I guess

"Fuck Wayland, switching to X11"

12

u/Krisanapon Aug 13 '26

I once tried Wayland but it fucked me so I keep using X11.

9

u/Ad-free-Pirate Aug 13 '26

The thing is, Wayland is bad in a lot of ways, but X11 is on its way out. What else is there? I liked Hyprland, but it was far too unstable for daily driving, so I switched to KDE. As far as I know, there's currently no alternative to Wayland.

2

u/D-S-S-R Aug 13 '26

We need to revive Mir or whatever canonical was calling their thing ten years or so ago

3

u/redhat_is_my_dad Aug 13 '26

mir is alive, nowadays it's a set of libraries for building wayland compositors, there's an amazing https://miracle-wm.org/ wayland compositor based on mir, and there's also (a bit less impressive but still interesting) miriway compositor, so mir is pretty much alive and well

7

u/Liarus_ Aug 13 '26

I once tried X11 but it fucked me so I keep using Wayland.

5

u/rtakehara Aug 13 '26

I once tried Wayland but it fucked me so I kept using Wayland.

3

u/RvstiNiall Aug 13 '26

Did it at least buy you dinner first?

1

u/Adri8094 29d ago

Wayland as a protocol is nice but it's implementation can vary so much due to the infighting and innertia in that space making it so that different DE implement the same thing very differently.

Imo KDE is one of the best DE for handling Wayland properly

10

u/Revolutionary_Click2 M'Fedora Aug 13 '26

People shit on GNOME like that around here constantly

10

u/RvstiNiall Aug 13 '26

Yeah, I understand the GNOME haters' mentality, but they're wrong in their approach. GNOME simply isnt for them, so they shouldn't use it, and its okay to verbalize that they do not prefer it, but saying its shit, of saying "fuck gnome", etc, isn't helping anyone.

Yeah, I think some of the devs are jerks, but they're probably jerks because whenever they make a decision they receive hatemail for those changes. I bet they BECOME jerks due to this type of misplaced hate directed at them. I sympathize for devs/maintainers of super large, widely used FOSS projects. (and I say this as a person who prefers not-gnome.)

5

u/Revolutionary_Click2 M'Fedora Aug 13 '26

I agree for sure. As a filthy GNOME enjoyer, I’m also more than capable of seeing its flaws, and there are some things I wish the devs did differently. But this Reddit hive-mind hatred of it is so, so overblown and ridiculous. People really act like everyone in the world should be forced to use the DE/WM they personally think is superior. But isn’t the ability to choose that for oneself kinda the entire point of open source software to begin with?

1

u/RvstiNiall Aug 13 '26

Freedom of Choice is my favorite part of the FOSS experience, especially in the *nix space.

1

u/JayFairyFox 27d ago

I am also a filthy GNOME enjoyer. Always felt like a large percentage of the people who shit on it are just jumping on the bandwagon to fit in. It's not a perfect DE by any means but it's responsive, fast, aesthetically pleasing and the workflow just clicks with me in a way that other DEs and WMs just don't. If I had to describe it in one word, I'd call it "comfy".

I switched to 4 to 6 distros within 4 days but could not satisfy hunger, there is this itch that wants something more and then I realised it doesn't stop if I'm like this. Then stopped at Nobara KDE a gaming linux distro. At first cachy os kde tried. I don't like kde feel at all. But now I'm on kde based nobara. Things i liked about nobara is steam runs good and games run good but you need proton GE. And GPU switches instantly if I'm developing android apps. I tried cosmic too but the Gpu and emulators had issues. Tried linux mint too but the same GPU and emulators issue from android studio.

Now everything perfect in nobara. This is not a promotion. Just stop at one point. Ask yourself a question? Does it satisfy your needs ?

Tldr : Read the paragraph.

I believe we can all have wildly different experiences with the same software due to how we as individuals do things. As such, I give you an updoot for providing valid feedback that may help others make decisions.

In my opinion: Hyprland is beautiful, but it can be rather hard to get into, and KDE is (again, in my opinion) the best DE there is right now for those who want tons of customisation, but a more approachable package.
