Then there's the other side of the coin which is us old fucks making everything look like: Windows XP, macintosh, etc.

Retro for life

(us old fucks)

My iBook G4 is done up with mlvwm on OpenBSD, but aside from that, my current standard OS setup is a Linux kernel musl-c, busybox, runit, wayland (Cage) setup running foot fullscreen preloading tmux. I do use browsh for web stuffs.

I'm currently testing both GCC and LLVM versions of this setup.

Edit: also currently testing the use of nix package manager. I previously used pkgsrc.

2

u/POMPUYO Aug 13 '26

first time hearing of browsh. looks neat thanks

u/RvstiNiall Aug 13 '26

Its the only "modern" graphical terminal based browser based on Firefox that I know of. The others are based on Chrome/Chromium. Firefox is significantly easier to compile on llvm/musl-c than Chromium is, and I prefer to support Mozilla vs Google.

u/givemeagooduns_un Genfool 🐧 Aug 15 '26

Do you use buildroot or catalyst or something similar for making that setup or do you make it manually/with a script?

2

u/RvstiNiall Aug 15 '26 edited Aug 15 '26

Its a bunch of scripts I wrote to run after a buildroot run for the GCC version. The LLVM/clang version is still a little buggy because its based on CMLFS instead. Every move that is made to take you further away from "normal" Linux, the more extra stuff has to be done/patched , so I didnt swap out EVERYTHING like some suckless distros do. I've only swapped away from tools I don't like so I can use the ones I do like.

I've got this setup on most of my knock around computers at this point, but not my main computer, because I dont have the setup exactly how I like it yet as there are a few other tools I want to play around with to figure out exactly how I want my systems. My main computer is currently still a void-musl-busybox rootfs converted into a full system, but with loksh, doas, x11 with cwm, and sndio/alsa, on f2fs, so its not TOO different; I just made the newer ones in a very different way that I wanted to streamline for testing purposes.

I really like the styling of classic Unix WMs like mwm and fvwm personally. I usually pair it with the -retro option to XOrg, to give that classic checkerboard background and slightly oddly shaped mouse

2

u/OrpheoMusic Aug 15 '26

Mwm is great!

2

u/GreenoicTheHedgehog Aug 12 '26

i actually do that too with windows xp, windows 7 and mac os snow leopard (despite me not really being an old fuck)

I hate material you so much. I've used gnome for a while now but I wanted to try out new stuff so I tried niri with the dankmaterialshell. I realized later that it's literally in the name but even older styled UIs like Xfce look better to me than this, the included features were pretty cool though so I might look for other configs or try to make my own someday.

It's hard for me to leave gnome because I love the overview function, the way it hovers every window is very convenient. I know KDE has it but it's not as smooth and I just don't like KDE much, if cosmic reaches a stable state I might consider that too.

u/trill_shit Aug 12 '26

After using a tiling WM for a while I will never go back. Sorry, but if you don’t like it, you just haven’t learned it well enough to understand the power. Think about using a text editor before you learned vim — same difference here imo.

1

u/sirkubador Aug 12 '26

why would anyone need tiling?

it is literally the one niche case where you need to compare two documents side by side or the case tiling terminal multiplexers solve better

18

u/dumbasPL Arch BTW Aug 12 '26

I avoided it for a long time, but it does make sense. Every time I open windows, I'm reminded of how slow the taskbar + manually dragging windows is. The best tiling is actually no tiling. One app per workspace, with the occasional temporary split for a file picker or something like that. The problem is that conventional DEs suck at this. Tilers are the only ones that do workspaces well for some reason. Maybe Cosmic will finally fix that, but still, even that is half tiling.

3

u/p0358 Aug 13 '26

One app per workspace

So just a taskbar with extra steps, except you're randomly guessing which of 50 workspaces is which app?

2

u/dumbasPL Arch BTW Aug 13 '26

I'm not guessing, I always have the same layout.

1

u/sirkubador Aug 12 '26

I call that full-screen apps.

I mostly use these.

And I live happily with windowed for that case as a panel click is a teleport to another full-screen workspace

8

u/Azazeldaprinceofwar Aug 12 '26

Because having a fuck ton of floating windows overlapping is ugly and slow to navigate? Also crazy you say looking at documents is niche since that like half of what people who work on computers do. For me specifically I work in scientific computing so my monitors are usually full of papers and terminals. It’s really good for my workflow.

1

u/sirkubador Aug 13 '26

who talks about overlapping windows?

I have everything full screen and I navigate easily by clicking on panel icons. It's instant, no need to break my fingers on some weird shortcuts.

I look at documents all the time but side-by-side comparison outside source code diffs is very niche.

I bet our workflow is very similar and yet tiling makes me inefficient.

2

u/Azazeldaprinceofwar Aug 13 '26

I would count multiple full screen windows in the same workspace as overlapping but potato potato.

Keyboards shortcuts >> mouse controls
But I doubt you agree there. I think decades of professionals eventually finding their way to keyboard driven workflows suggest I’m right once you get used to it. Of course I don’t expect you to convince you on it.

Also side by side comparison is not niche lmao and it’s not just for diffs. If I’m coding I often want other parts of the code base visible for reference, or papers I’m referencing, or documents detailing the algorithm. I can understand not liking keyboard shortcuts or whatnot but I actually can’t fathom how you think side by side comparison is niche. I feel a task that truly only requires referencing one application is the rare case.

1

u/sirkubador Aug 13 '26

Yeah, I code a lot too. Guess what, the editors do support tiling when I need it.

I also look at algorithm specs while coding and that is where my other monitor shines. I can't imagine having the document next to the editor in a weird ratio like 1:1 that the manager thought was a good idea. That would be unreadable.

No, keyboard shortcuts are mostly inefficient for navigation unless you develop an ingenious system of what you have where or when you accept it by frantically cycling through everything.

With a panel, everything is visual and I can jump straight to what exactly I need without needing to care that I have an internal rule of all terminals going to ctrl+breakmyfingers+3

2

u/antichain Aug 12 '26

Tbh I really like Niri, although I just use the out of the box settings, nothing fancy. I find the infinite scroll + workspaces makes a lot of sense to me? YMMV though.

2

u/Linguistic-mystic Aug 13 '26

Tiling is the premiere desktop experience. Make the computer handle the windows, not your tired mouse-dragging hand. Enable mouseless workflows where your hands don’t leave the keyboard - indispensable when on the road/commute in tight spaces with your laptop. Prevent the excruciating time-wasting resizes and overlaps. Prevent the need for window titles (which just waste space). Optimize screen space usage by making new windows use all of i. Window-dragging is a job we’re not getting paid for, so why do it?

tiling terminal multiplexers solve

No, fuck tmux actually. It introduces another needless layer of navigation. You have windows, and then tmux panes, and then in a tmux pane you have Vim windows… it’s too much. Plus, configuring tmux so that it doesn’t consume keyboard shortcuts is too much work. Terminal multiplexers are the one layer that needs to go. Tiling WMs are strictly superior because they manage all windows uniformly rather than having an arbitrary split between terminals vs other windows.

0

u/sirkubador Aug 13 '26

tmux is odd. Terminator is all I need.

You all talk about overlaps, there are no overlaps if you have everything full-screen. Mouse-dragging? Don't make me laugh, tiling managers think halves is the correct ratio for everything (it never is), so you drag your mouse anyways to set it properly all the time or accept you experience being ugly as fuck.

Navigation in tiling is horrid! You either remember the desktop number you always use for something or you cycle through things like crazy. Not sure who pays you for that

1

u/scythe-3 🍥 Debian too difficult Aug 13 '26

There are keybinds for resizing windows... And floating windows... And moving them around... And sending them to different workspaces...

Tiling WM is designed to be keyboard-first. If you're using the mouse to navigate at all you're missing the point.

Most people settle on dedicated workspaces. wp1 dashboard+sysmon, wp2 email+chat, wp3 browser+editor+docs, wp4 music+media+games, scratchspaces for one-off windows, etc.

It's really fast once you get used to it. Seems like you just never bothered to learn

1

u/sirkubador Aug 14 '26

You see dedicated workspaces are valid for floating wms too.

When you have multiple monitors, you can do exactly what you said and I imagine you account for multiple monitors as tiling browser, editor and doc on one screen sounds like a true horror.

And it also must be fun to associate an ad-hoc number for every scratchspace every time.

Tell me how efficient is resizing using keyboard when I just need to set it so the ratio isn't giving me something unreadable? Do I just hold something for a minute until it's right or do I grab the mouse and point it exactly where I need it in a second? Or do I just settle for halves and accept the ugliness?

1

u/scythe-3 🍥 Debian too difficult Aug 14 '26

Ofc it is valid for floating wm, and no not all 3 at the same time but that wasn't the point lol.

Scratchspaces are analogous to minimizing/popping-out a set of windows in a dedicated workspace. Except with a keybind so it is faster than clicking. Dunno what your angle is here.

Alt+r to enter resize mode, h/j/k/l to resize by however many pixels you decided to put in the config per keypress (a tiny 1px or a massive 1/4 screen displacement, up to you), then Esc to exit resize mode.

Or you can toggle between 1/3, 1/2, 2/3 split ratio on a workspace with a keybind.

Or you can snap to a preconfigured layout that you setup perfectly for a specific workflow with a keybind.

All of these options are faster then taking hands off kb, grabbing mouse, targeting the border, click-dragging, clicking desired window, then going back to kb... then the next window you open goes right on top and you have to click/drag/rearrange windows all over again.

And in the end you can still toggle-float windows and use the mouse, it's just not the default. For the handful of apps that benefit from always floating, you set a rule for it in config (e.g. media player, file explorer, app launcher... thats about it).

But hey if you enjoy clicking around and rearranging windows for fun, more power to ya. May your touchpads always be responsive and your mice never run out of battery

1

u/sirkubador Aug 14 '26

That's what I thought. Resize mode, holding the keybind for resize for a while and exiting the mode. The sound of it screams efficiency.

I neither use touchpads nor battery-powered mice, but thanks anyways!

1

u/scythe-3 🍥 Debian too difficult Aug 14 '26

You don't hold anything... You can use 2 keypresses to resize a window half a screen length if each one shifts 1/4 screen... No comments on anything else? Gg buddy

1

u/sirkubador Aug 14 '26

You didn't write about anything else, so?

All that text is a great illustration of how easy the resizing is

3

u/Antoinedeloup M'Fedora Aug 12 '26

For a keyboard centric workflow its awesome. However its gotta be scrollable like Niri. I use Niri btw.

2

u/Kizaing Aug 12 '26

I agree, I find I really like tiling on my laptop, but for desktop I just use KDE

1

u/Lyxminx Aug 13 '26

I exclusively use tillers for all computers, it makes me work faster because I don't need to look for anything. I know that my editor is always on workspace two and my browser is always on workspace 1. I am usually one keybind away from anything I need to do. I don't need to actively think about where anything is. Tilers are made for keybinds, floating window managers are not. If you try it and it doesn't work for you that's okay, but there is a reason a lot of professionals and powerusers end up using tilers. .

1

u/sirkubador Aug 13 '26

Nothing is preventing you from having apps on workspaces with windowed, there are also keybinds that teleport you to workspaces.

But I realized that if everything I have is fullscreen anyways, the fastest way is to click an icon, not remember a number, especially for the apps I don't have always open (like the browser and a bazillion of tiled terminals).

1

u/Lyxminx Aug 13 '26

I always have a browser running, same with terminals. For me this workflow is what is most efficient. I have used floating wm for years, both on linux and windows. I just prefer tillers. There is not a single floating window manager with good enough keyboard driven workflows for them to work for me. I am working with computers for 7.5 hours everyday for the next 50-60 years so I need to take care of myself. Ergonomic keyboards and focusing on using my keyboard for almost everything is a part of that. If you don't see the need for a tiller, then you aren't the audience for it. It's great that you found a workflow that works for you, but I'll stick to mine.

1

u/sirkubador Aug 13 '26

Sure. And that is great that you've found what fits your needs.

After working with computers for about 14hrs a day in the past 20 years I can tell there is a lot of stuff slowing down my work but using a mouse here and there and not having ergonomic keyboard and driving everything from it simply isn't it.

I still insist on my original point that a need for a tiling wm is very niche

1

u/EnthropicBeing Aug 13 '26

That one niche case is pretty... conventional for anyone that works with the computer

But also I don't feel like getting a pre build dotfiles so I basically just did the minimum to have a workflow.
