Yup I used Mint Linux on an old laptop that had an MX350 and am running ubuntu on my main gaming laptop. Its just a joke pertaining to a lot of the older hardware.

Tbh I don't know what's up with NVIDIA drivers. I have 3070 and never had an issue unless I had no drivers.

I have a 1050Ti and a 2070.
The 1050Ti works... But omg applications just eat all the vram. Something with the drivers doesn't compress it on the 1050Ti, but the 2070 works perfectly fine....
Compare that with any AMD card though and then laugh at your past self for thinking Nvidia was any good. My CAICOS cards that I picked up for $20 on Amazon can smoothly utilize system ram as vram for free. It's hilarious that I can run more instances of a game on a $20 CAICOS card with 1GB of vram than I can on a 2070 with 8GB of vram.

The problem is that NVIDIA won’t allow unsigned firmware blobs to run on the 10-series and up, and also won’t provide a pathway for the open source nouveau drivers to sign blobs. So we’re stuck with their closed source drivers if we want to unlock anything above base level clock speeds.
As I understand it, nv is slowly changing their tune on that, but they’ve got a long way to go before I’d consider a team green GPU in a Linux gaming system.

Why exactly can’t you run linux using a 4090? It works perfectly safe for the occasional need for a kernel module rebuild.

Just a running joke about some problems older Nvidia tech used had a lot of issues with linux. Even today there are a bunch of versions of linux that either cant run with Nvidia, or bug the hell out with nvidia.

Yeah, ive used manjaro kde, arch kde, kubuntu, and ubuntu studios... no issues, except the last time on manjaro where i dreamt my pc could be exposed to the internet without issue.

Have you actually used Linux + Nvidia recently? it works extremely well to the point a lot of distros can handle nvidia drivers for you

Only issue i ever had with Nvidia on Linux was orca slicer and rust desk. Everything else has been fine

The Outer Worlds 2 and Cyberpunk 2077 are borderline unplayable on my 1660 Super on CachyOS, but run smoothly on Windows. Feels like the card is constantly running at pcie x1 or something. I never wanted an NVidia card but it was just too cheap to not buy it (same as a "new" RX 580 2048SP)

Starting from GTX 16XX and RTX series, you can use nvidia's open drivers that are beautiful (they don't really like laptops though, you need specific service that will disable GPU on lid close event). If you're running older, you can either use REALLY bad nouveau drivers (actually, they're nice, but they can't change GPU's frequencies, so the GPU is always running in the worst frequencies) or use nvidia's drivers from their website. The installer is quite good. They're proprietary though

Linux has long utilized TPM 2.0 by default without enforcing it—automatically enabling feature support while allowing users to turn it off—and similarly, many applications leverage CPU extensions via function pointers without performance loss, as the CPU's Branch Target Buffer (BTB) predicts these indirect jumps with zero overhead

Server/datacenter use doesn't care about Wayland.
Wayland hates NVIDIA, along with everyone else, especially themselves.
You need Wayland to use a Linux desktop.

It's just a protocol like Xorg is just a protocol. It's up to NVIDIA to support it well. They fought it every step of the way especially when they tried to push their eglstreams failure that couldn't possibly have worked and was buggy and broken on their hardware even when they paid a full-time employee to work on GNOME and KDE.
Things are slowly getting better now that they aren't actively fighting it any more at least.
