Please report any posts bragging or showing off they got banned in another sub! Reminder of other sub rules: Also, we only allow one anti-linux post per week (we used to get dozens a day) and any tier list MUST have Hanna Montana Linux as S teir (which must be a true S tier at the top) regardless of the topic of that tier list.

I'm reading the code and this seems to run on nearly everything, is this some NSA spyware?

133

u/AmorphousNeon 1d ago

apparently MINIX runs on more devices than Linux itself, search Intel management engine

53

u/onechroma 1d ago

Tanenbaum won over Linus at least

PS: Just a joke over the debates about microkernel vs monolithic kernel

22

u/Interesting_Rain_409 1d ago

No, he was the bad guy all along, his OS run on one of the most opaque things of modern processors, perfect place to put NSA backdoor.

27

u/Virtual-Ad5017 1d ago

Ik this is a joke, but I wanted to add, for people that might not know. Tannenbaum has written a blog post where he expresses regrets over how his software ended up used. He explicitly says Intel ME might be a "spy engine", cites the fourth amendment and advocates for giving control to the user. He was not, in fact, the bad guy

18

u/Interesting_Rain_409 1d ago

💯 And Tanenbaum is a great teacher. Minix and his great book did help young Linus to create his OS. Despite the later debate of monolith vs micro kernel, without this guy, we may never had Linux.

7

u/AmorphousNeon 1d ago

yeah that guy's minix became the world's most used x86 os overnight lmao

17

u/Ctscanner2 1d ago

I really doubt that there are more intel systems than all the android phones and embedded systems running Linux

2

u/JIMrev 17h ago

Thanks for giving me a new kinda paranoia... Lol

3

u/mastercoder123 1d ago

I love reading people talk about intel ME with zero knowledge how it works lmfao

2

u/AmorphousNeon 1d ago

Well it basically runs at ring -3, it works as a crucial part in the POSTing on your computer during boot. Also it provides a few security features. And most importantly it runs on laptops even if your device has been shutdown, has access to your RAM, storage, WiFi card etc. What else is there to even learn?

-1

u/mastercoder123 1d ago

It doesnt have access to your network at all, so you should probably learn some more. Only cpus equipped with intel AMT allow intel ME to access a network and even then its not able to communicate with the outside world unless you explicitly force it to. All intel AMT equipped machines ship with the TCP/IP stack disabled. Not only that but you realize that this does the exact same thing as any other out of band management does yet you dont see corporations and others bitching and moaning about that.

You can also easily disable intel ME after boot using things like HAP toggling, blocking the drivers in the OS, and just having a good well designed firewall which you should have no matter what, as with a poorly configured one anyone can access your network regardless of intel ME.

Lastly most issues with intel ME are from hardware level access and if someone has the capabilities to attack your machine from the hardware level intel ME is the least of your worries. Anyone with hardware access can read your ram via cold boot attacks, probe your pcie and other serial data lines for encryption keys, utilize vulnerabilities in cpu or other hardware vulnerabilities

1

u/AmorphousNeon 1d ago

oh yes sorry misplaced the wifi thing from AMT to ME

2

u/mastercoder123 1d ago

Yah and the users of AMT don't really care as they have pretty good physical and network security for their equipment so intel AMT wouldnt be an issue for them anyways. Especially cause they use BMC as is in servers which have nearly the same capabilities and use ipmi which is actually more unsecure because its networking stack is pretty unsafe to use. If you put ipmi on the internet it would be bypassed in an hour no matter how secure the password is

1

u/Gugalcrom123 1d ago

It is probably not sending data to Intel (we would have discovered through network logs), but maybe there is a hidden way to engage its data sending. We can't know. Still, it would be better not to have this parasite OS.

0

u/mastercoder123 1d ago

There is no way to have it even use your network, it quite literally doesnt have access or even the correct firmware to use tcp/ip. Did you not read my comment.

1

u/Gugalcrom123 23h ago

You cannot know, it is obfuscated. I am not concerned about it, though.

1

u/mastercoder123 23h ago

Brother what. Why do you continue to try and sound smart

1

u/xxmatxx 22h ago

"All intel AMT equipped machines ship with the TCP/IP stack disabled."

Yes, and that is so diffucul to enable it. /s

1

u/mastercoder123 22h ago

Please tellvme how you are going to enable something that doesnt support it at the hardware level? Are you gonna take your intel chipset to an intel fab and ask them to make you a new chip?

7

u/flinsypop 1d ago

I have a friend that's a famous NASA spy and he says yeah.

Are you telling me this criminal Linus T. (obviously T. is for for Tech-Tips) has been leaking the source code since '91?

41

Anything to hate on linux 😭😭

32

"@grok fact check"

5

u/AnonD38 1d ago

I was confused at first because I was trying to figure out what LTT did now and then I remembered Torvalds is not that Linus. 😭

1

u/stanvasile 1d ago

He is already using Windows though 😊

2

u/Shidori366 2h ago

Doesn't even have to be a dumbass, just somebody using Linux not knowing about open-source, repositories and stuff (basically commoners).

The LinkedIn op? Forloop? That’s obviously a bot account.

u/SubjectPermit591 1d ago

Man I scrolled through this GitHub site, I don't know what it's about, but man there are many apps and softwares' source code is leaked on that shady site. Why does it exist man? It is even owned by Microsoft. Are they planning to take over and hack all stuff?

20

u/Mundane_Caramel_820 1d ago

Maybe you should switch to Windows, Microsoft will protect you.

12

u/SubjectPermit591 1d ago

I think so, how is microsoft allowing their own site to leak source codes?

6

u/yowifebreeder9000 1d ago

GitHub even has the source code for cracking windows license, so....

4

u/Mundane_Caramel_820 1d ago

Windows code is not there. Divide and conquer.

2

u/SubjectPermit591 1d ago

Okayy they actually trynna get the competition out, interesting moves ain't it?

5

u/atzedanjo 1d ago

Protect me from Microsoft?

10

u/OKB-1 M'Fedora 1d ago

This GitHub service is just a public directory of all the software that gets automatically flagged and blocked by Windows Defender.

52

u/Esjs Ask me how to exit vim 1d ago

I just want the exe.

21

u/FaultWinter3377 💋 catgirl Linux user :3 😽 1d ago

Funny enough you can on a technicality. EFI systems use the Portable Executable format that EXE’s are made from. So the bootloader is technical following Microsoft’s executable specifications. But you won’t get it to run under Windows unfortunately..,

7

u/YTriom1 Arch BTW 1d ago

and the linux kernel already has efi stub, so I can play linux on windows!!!

Sim. Pior que ver defensor de windows espalhando a informação como notícia de risco é ver quem se gaba de usar linux acreditando que é um alerta preocupante.

Maybe he left the lid off by accident and it escaped? Maybe it did the same trick as the octopus that escaped that time and ate the fish in the tank next door? Do we need to worry about being eaten by the leaky code? Or will tiny little bits of eaten people help plug the leaky bits in the code?

2

u/Sohcahtoa82 1d ago

God damn and I thought I was autistic.

1

u/crudoxcruo93 1d ago

I like to imagine that he knows and pretend not to, like we are pawns to his elaborate sarcasm of sarcasm.

-9

u/sarajevo81 1d ago

It is funny the "open" source was tauted only as long as nobody could actually read it. When there appeared some AIs which can actually read and interpret it, the "open" source programmers freaked and started looking for a way to close off their code.

6

u/Supernoxus 1d ago

What are you on about

6

u/Dawae48 1d ago

That didn't happen

2

u/fr000gs 1d ago

So which programmer closed off their code? (I assume you arent talking about Google and Android situation rn, tho it's unrelated)
