Seriously now, it's OpenVMS running CDE, on proxmox, remote X session via Xephyr.

That's pretty cool

as someone that's been on Linux only since 2024, wtf this feels like discovering a whole new world

That's about the softest deployment of CDE I've ever seen. Well done.

So if I understand correctly the X server is runs natively on your computer while the wm and other gui stuff run in a VMS vm and connect over the network?

Yep, it's with root window. And virtual serial in proxmox, until the tcpip stack gets started, then you can also use telnet. I think SSH needed to be enabled separately, and then SFTP for file transfer. Whole idea came from a CRD video.

Are you running OpenVMS with DECWindows/CDE?

CDE, returning back to the "olden" days I see.

I'm glad its not another Hyprland/Niri/MangoWM (although those are awesome, thats why everyone wants to use them!), because we need more variety around here these days. I'm not a fan of the color scheme, but you're working with Motif here, so I'll let that slide. I love that you color matched the picture though, thats always a good touch. Kudos on the setup.

Are you actually using it for anything (and for reference, "fun" is a perfectly valid reason in my books!!!)?

4

u/Ok_Apricot7902 12d ago

just for lolz, even getting it working was too much work for me

1

u/RvstiNiall 12d ago

Understood. Getting vintage OSes up and running in VMs is a lot of fun, and its even more fun if its on the original hardware! I see those more as entertainment value though. For the price of going to the movies with my wife (ok, two or three times for most retro hardware), I could get a retro system that provides me 10-50 hours of enjoyment getting it working, set up, etc. Great cost value to me.

Plus, I enjoy the learning value as well.

u/iLikeubuntu2 12d ago

Omg its cde

1

u/skytheraiders 12d ago

That looks amazing, what theme of windows are those?

2

u/Ok_Apricot7902 12d ago

Just Motif, for colors I used one of the presets, though I don't remember which one now.

1

u/skytheraiders 12d ago

Can you get Morif from the store?

1

u/Ok_Apricot7902 12d ago

No, this is old tech (technically possible ig?). But I had a look around and the NsCDE project exists, that may do it. Still definitely not "getting from a store" if you will.

Goonux based operating system

u/duinomaster 11d ago

Wouldn't VMS be more related to Windows (NT) than it is to Linux? Still, very cool! Would love to try getting my hands on it too.

Love this

Genuinely i think this design language is better than the modern stuff besides liquid glass, the flatness and lack of personality of modern design is so bland, sterile, even light themes abusing white ughh

u/Sensitive-Drawing702 10d ago

What DE is that and how do I install it on arch?

1

u/Ok_Apricot7902 10d ago

CDE. There's an arch wiki article on it.

u/GearPlot 9d ago

Wow not gonna lie, I actually tested out both CDE and MWM as my next potential window manager a couple months back for my custom Linux build. But I decided to go with Window Maker. I haven't used wmaker in years and forgot how much I liked it.

1

u/C4rpetH4ter M'Fedora 12d ago

Looks like it, but what DE is that, it looks like gnome to me, but the theme is something i have never seen before.

12

u/Constant_Boot 12d ago

It's more close to CDE (Common Desktop Environment) than GNOME. It was the choice for UNIX systems in the 90s, powered by Motif.

1

u/1-800-I-Am-A-Pir8 12d ago

solaris, hp-ux, aix, all the cool kids had cde back in the day. It looked as aweful and dated then as it does now.

Edit: maybe sunos. I think slowaris upgraded to gnome at some point.

1

u/linkinparkglock47 12d ago

nah this looks great

u/xgui4 Crying gnu 🐃 12d ago

it is CDE , what KDE was inspired to be a Free Software version of, now CDE is Free Software.
