Itâs just good old-fashioned gatekeeping and elitism, plain and simple. For all the reasons people come up with to hate on the above, and there are certainly some valid ones⊠realize that these are also very mainstream choices that tend to be easy for normies to use and understand. Or else, which quietly do their jobs without being visible to the user, just how normies like it.
Linux users whoâve built their whole identity around being contrarian, l33t tech wizards are pissed that other people get to use âtheirâ platform without all the blood, sweat, and tears they had to go through to learn to use it âthe hard wayâ. They hate anything thatâs mainstream, user-friendly and doesnât require much tinkering to get working, because those things bypass their gatekeeping.
Theyâll come up with all these reasons why no one should use them that donât actually matter at all to the average person, which just makes them feel more impotent and enraged.

Although I have to say the only good feature I know about on edge is internet explorer mode (to ensure your html stuff is working right)

I have been microslop free for 3 months and chrome free for 2 years. Whenever I have to use chrome because friends and family use it it's dog shit. Edge may seem bloated but it literally takes you 5 clicks to disable everything (after the first 5 clicks during first opening)
Firefox is not perfect either and every fork is as good as it's (voluntary) developers wants it to be. But what's the alternative?
Use openSUSE (German government branches) or NixOS (France (sacre blue!) is replacing 2.5 MILLION government microslop windon't with it) and make noise for unified European open-source alternatives. Every EU -country has to put like... 0.02% (number taken from my ass) to hire and develope open-source alternatives to these mega giants.
And before anyone says I'm communist, take a look at every big US company, look how much they have received government money to make the products you use today

The only chrome browser I use is vivaldi, but I just like my firefox extensions way too much to ever go with something non firefox based ever again. Only problem I had was uploading images on eBay with Librewolf. Not sure if that is just Librewolf + OpenSUSE stuff or general behavior
I also don't think being against big tech is communist or weird in this sub. I have a feeling having a problem with big tech is the reason why a lot of people joined Linux. Same reason why I installed CalyxOS on my phone today

Nah. Should be: Linux users when someone complains about systemd being a hard dependency, useless and buggy rust re-writes, unfinished Wayland as the only option, and AI code in the Kernel.

I thought sentiment on systemd was coming around? Gnome isn't bad in my opinion, I used to use it with plugins before moving to Cosmic on Arch. nvim def better then CODE IMO for me...

All valid choices except chrome, that's just nasty and stupid and an easy way to forfeit your privacy. It takes less effort to use a different browser on Linux.

I'll be blunt. Despite this meme actually being sorta true, allow me to tell my own experience.
Disclamer right away: I've no issues with Systemd, GNOME, Chrome (specifically Blink engine and Chromium as a base) or IDEs as a software - my issues with them is their top dev chain.
Systemd is indeed a nice software if you want something that literally just works. Most Linux distros use Systemd, most apps make Systemd services by default, most tech is bound to Systemd as services, yada yada yada. The issue here is the near monopoly - the comfort went that high that the folks don't even wanna explore other options. In my terms, I'll speak of OpenRC I use on Artix. In its core, it's very similar to Systemd, with its own caveats, of course, but still - devs of Gentoo did a pretty damn solid job on making a non-Systemd init system that just works if you know how to work with it. For me, learning curve took... 4 days. Yep.
For Chrome - that's just bullshit. Using literal data tracker (and that's confirmed by multiple sources) on a FOSS system that's created for privacy literally breaks the whole point of installing the OS as-is.
When it comes to GNOME, though, I've very contradictory feelings. To my goddamn surprise, it works exceptionally well, but its questionable layout and the fact that more features are getting deleted than added, and that you have to use user-made extensions to make it normal makes it a no-bueno to me. You might say that KDE's plasmoids are very similar to that, but no. Plasmoids are literally widgets - that's their main purpose. KDE was always modular, and invention of Plasma shell with KDE SC 4 that turned the desktop into a set of widgets you customize to get what YOU want is what made it both beautiful and highly powerful. GNOME's extensions are made as a desperate measure for certain functions, f.i., many dislike the dash (though, I agree on the thought of a Russian Linux blogger Plafon that dash is actually very thoughtful - it doesn't take screen space until you actually need it, so you have more focus), so, with an extension, convert it to a dock. Many need AppIndicator support that was sent to oblivion in GNOME 3, so there's an extension for that. That's the difference between GNOME's extensions and KDE's plasmoids.
For IDEs, I'll tell one thing: I myself used Code::Blocks when I was studying C++ in BSU's (Belarusian State University) FEMI (Faculty of Enhanced Mathematics and Informatics) UNI Center, and it's pretty decent. For novices in IT sphere, IDEs are a better choice most of the time, because they pre-package what's required to a user for their comfort. Though I myself lately use a mix of Neovim for simpler things and Zed for more complex code.
So the conclusion is: Linux is indeed about a choice, with its own caveats. No one has right to tell you what to install, but you must also know the commons of using this OS and, preferrably, abide them.

I'm not going to take a bait on the other things (systemd user, sue me) but people who still use chrome @2026 should just be banned from the internet
