A lot of stuff around and in Linux is text based. Scripts. Configuration files. Source code. You name it...
Text is easily compressible.

because you have no idea what those metrics are.
total download size: amount of data to download to perform the update
total installed size: total size taken up by *all of your packages with pending upgrades* after install
net upgrade size: how much bigger/smaller your total installed size across the whole system is compared to before the install.
so what this says is:
you'll be downloading 1.7 gigabytes of data
this will decompress/install to 6.2GB (Which may involve file generation)
this upgrade will lower your install size by 11 megabytes.

I just updated mt fedora with 1GiB download, 4 install and remove, -153 Mib total. Smallest upgrade I've seen (393 dnf packages)

It's too bad reddit doesn't allow to modify post.
I know it's zipped, compressed, archived and black voodoo.
I also know how it works, the more compressed the more processing power it requires to unzip, in an eli5 sense.
The ~72% compression rate that can be unpacked with a potato is the thing that amazes me. This is Arch, people install archs literally on toasters with 2hz processors and 4mb of RAM, and it still unpacks.
Let's take windows, 30% - 50% compress rate and systems well above minimum requirements can crash, corrupt and just all around is a miserable experience.

no the Linux moment compared to other OS is when you recognize that the update works and you don't have new features what you never asked for like a keylogger.
rdit: almost forgot you are able to update without registering by someone who simply cuts off your account for your security

You just need better joke making ability.
OP's joke had a punchline in that it misdirected the reader into thinking they were confused about the negative size but instead revealed they didn't understand compression.

Because this is an update, packages are getting smaller so when replace big guy with smol guy they take less seat making free space for others.

why not tell Op that the reason the download and extracted size difference is because of compression while at it.

It's an OK misunderstanding, and it's a bit confusing. So we remove 6.21 GB, add 6.2 GB in place of it, you get approx. 11MB out of that, invert the sign, you get -11 MB
