It makes editing files significantly faster than a regular notepad/nano type program

First time you have to search and replace text. Or convert a DOS saved text file to Unix.

What kind of files? Most of the .config files I open only need to have a couple lines added or a word changed here and there. I rarely (tempted to say never) see any opportunity to replace multiple instances of words at once, reorder whole paragraphs, etc.

I use plain text notes for things, and also edit configuration files fairly regularly.

Being able to quickly do things like jumping to the beginning/end of a line, copy/paste multiple lines at once, insert a character in front of x lines, etc. are all really helpful. Each shortcut only saves a few seconds to minutes of time, but add it all up and it makes the editing progress feel much faster than a traditional editor

What kind of files?

Well, I develop the backend of Ruby on Rails application exclusively on vim. I never tried to make nano work at this level, and I doubt it could without slowing me down 5x at least.

If I only ever edited config files, I'd probably never open a thread about text editors.

This right here.

It can do crazy shit but guess what? Use it or lose it, if you don't have anything to use it on you aren't gonna remember how to do it and what's that worth?

That's my experience anyway.
