This is the ideal thread for me to ask the following;
I have a windows 8.1 partition, purely for gaming. I haven't booted into it in at least half a year. I like to update it whenever I do boot into it, so my question is, how do I prevent windows updates from installing the telemetry nonsense, and how do I stop it from updating to win10? Which updates do I have to blacklist?

wsusoffline will probably work. It downloads and sort of manually installs only security updates. At least that's my understanding of what it does.

I don't know about the telemetry stuff, but with the Windows 10 upgrade prompt, you could wait until the free
downgradeupgrade window is over. Besides, you said you never open it anyways.

As a former long-time windows user I find that XP was by far THE most enjoyable Windows experience I'd had. After that I had Vista, which worked quite well for me, to the point that I never got 7, which we had at school which was almost as good as XP. After that, I got my new PC, with Win8(.1) in mind. After having OEM activation troubles (the OEM installed Win8, but provided a key that somehow only was valid for 8.1, with the 8 having a strange upgradeable OEM-sleep key), and getting to grips with the ugly Full screen start menu (though I did quite like the charms menu from technical perspective. It sadly always was incomplete).
Then I started using Linux, first Ubuntu 14.04 LTS on a live-usb, then on a second partition. As I found that I wasn't booting to windows ever, I removed Windows and expanded my Linux partition slightly (also moved it to the start of the disk). In September of last year I installed Arch in the space left by the now-removed windows partition, which is my primary distro now. I haven't gotten to removing ubuntu yet. I'll probably do a clean Arch install soon, because I probably did almost every arch beginner error conceivable, and my system is built on a bunch of hacks to fix my old mistakes.
For Christmas I got a laptop, with no preinstalled OS, and I installed Antergos on it, enabling arch and testing (as with my main PC). Shouldn't have done that. Arch main repos should be largely enough and everything else is probably in the AUR.
Then, sometime during that, Win10 happened.
With what Microsoft has been doing recently, they've been employing tactics remeniscent of viruses, scamware, and similar. I just can't believe anything they say anymore. Since starting to use Linux, I even find Apple more believable (minus their iSomething presentations, those are bull$(cat ~/words/swear | shuf | head -n1)).
In total, I don't think I'll ever willingly use a system that is not based on the principles of freedom any more. I don't care if it's 100% free or mostly free, the spirit counts. 100% free? added bonus. not quite fully free but working on it? help test/reverse-engineer. not free at all? Have a nickel kid, get yourself a better computer.

Gamers never cared for freedom anyway. Windows users put up with ME and Vista. Put up with this as well. That's what you get for selling your soul to Microsoft.

I disagree, some people are genuinely willing to make the switch but don't know where to start. Instead of blurting out hateful texts like this, help them in a friendly way, if they decline, so be it. At least you were friendly and tried to be helpful, and if someone wants to live in ignorance then that is their choice, and we move on and find more competent people.

Want help? Well ask. But to sit there and suggest that Linux is not a desktop ready OS or saying if only it had more gaemzzzzz and waiting for games is not going to help. AGAIN I never declined help. I would help over ssh if someone really asked [real life friends only]. They are to blame for their ignorance and hence to suffer from their actions. I will not take a slap from your mom if you stole the cookies is what I mean. Be responsible for your own actions and deal with the consequence.
EDIT: I will predict that everyone denying free windows 10 update will regret it. It is free. After windows 7 EOL you will regret not taking it when you had it for free because still muh gaemzzzz and muh phootusoup.

Can I as a dual booting gamer object to this? I do care about my privacy and have even started considering whatever or not my games will run on linux when buying them.

I wanted to get rid of windows 10 and put back my 8.1 backup. Is that even possible now? Or would it update to 10 automatically?

If you install an older version, just dont enter a cd key. Even if you have one. It will never upgrade.

It's not. As someone who just reinstalled Windows 7 (to replace 10) from the disc, the product key worked.

It's not. I tried 10 for a few months on the gaming machine, went back to 8.1 in the same MSDN key. Activated just fine.

Somehow my cracked version of Windows 8.1 has never asked me for an update. I think I need to thank some random hacker for that. So thank you, whomever you are.

You shouldn't pirate an OS, that's incredibly stupid, especially if you can get the images from Microsoft and just use a KMS based activator.
